Honeymoons Around The World: 25 Dream Destinations For Couples

Beach honeymoons, short minimoons, multi-centre adventures and luxury resorts in Europe, We’ve listed 25 dream destinations to suit all tastes and budgets.

Honeymoons are the ultimate romantic holiday and one of the few times you can justify splashing out on a luxury hotel or overwater bungalow, then simply relaxing and enjoying every minute of it. But we all have different tastes and budgets, so there is no one size fits all when it comes to choosing the perfect honeymoon.

For some, lazing on a tropical beach is the dream, while others might prefer an action packed adventure or a romantic city break in Europe. You could also combine some beach time with a little adventure and choose a multi centre honeymoon.

To make things easier, we have put together 25 amazing honeymoon options below, with something to suit every couple and every type of honeymoon.

Honeymoons in Europe

Amalfi Coast, Italy

Amalfi Coast honeymoons from ireland

Best time of year to visit: April, May, September & October

When we think of bucket list honeymoons, we usually think of far flung destinations. However, sometimes what we are looking for is right on our doorstep. The Amalfi Coast is one of Europe’s most stunning coastlines. Each resort is nicer than the next and the views across the Bay of Naples are breathtaking.

Sorrento is the liveliest of the resorts and also less expensive than some of its neighbours. However for the ultimate bucket list honeymoon I would choose Positano or Ravello. Alternatively combine it with a few days on the Isle of Capri to see it all.

Greek Island Honeymoons

Greek honeymoons

Best time of year to visit: May, Early June & September

For couples who are looking for a beach honeymoon, without travelling too far, the Greek Islands won’t disappoint. There are many islands offering direct flights from Ireland including Crete, Rhodes, Santorini, Zakynthos and Corfu, and many luxurious hotels to choose from.

Santorini is the obvious classic choice for a Greek island honeymoon. With its famous whitewashed buildings, stunning caldera views, beautiful sunsets and romantic atmosphere, it is easy to see why it is so popular with couples. Just keep in mind that Santorini is not known for its golden sandy beaches, with most of its beaches having dark volcanic sand and summer months being extremely busy and hot.

If you would prefer golden or white sandy beaches, consider Rhodes or Crete instead. Both islands have fantastic hotels, beautiful beaches, great restaurants and plenty of things to see and do, from boat trips and historic sites to exploring charming towns and villages. You will get the same warm Greek hospitality, but both can offer a more relaxed feel and, in many areas, fewer crowds than Santorini.

Honeymoons in Mexico and the Caribbean

Caribbean Cruise

VIrgin Voyages

Best time of year to go: November – April

Want to honeymoon in the Caribbean but not sure which island to choose? Why not try a Caribbean cruise and see several destinations in one trip?

Cruising is also really easy, it is like staying in a floating hotel with plenty of restaurants, bars, pools and entertainment all in one place. You can relax by the pool, enjoy some time in the spa, or get off at each stop and explore a different Caribbean island.

For an adults only option, Virgin Voyages has a more elevated feel, with no buffets, great restaurants, lively parties and plenty of adult focused entertainment. It is a great way to see more of the Caribbean while still having plenty of time to relax together.

Mexico Caribbean Coast

all inclusive holidays in Mexico

Best time of year to visit: November – April

Mexico is the perfect destination for all inclusive honeymoons, especially if you want the option to completely switch off and not leave the resort. I was in Mexico last year and absolutely loved how diverse it is. Even along the Riviera Maya, you can spend your entire holiday relaxing by the pool or on the beach, or you can really get stuck in and explore everything the area has to offer.

There are day trips to Isla Mujeres and Cozumel, the chance to visit Chichen Itza, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, zipline at Xplor Park, explore cenotes and discover ancient Mayan ruins. So whether you want to spend your honeymoon doing absolutely nothing or filling your days with activities, Mexico gives you both options.

The resorts are also huge and have so much going on, with a wide choice of restaurants, bars, pools, entertainment and activities, depending on what you are looking for. You can choose from a huge range of resorts along the Riviera Maya, with something to suit every type of honeymoon.

Cancún is a good choice if you want a livelier atmosphere and plenty of entertainment, while Playa del Carmen has a great mix of beaches, restaurants, nightlife and things to do. Tulum is a great option if you are looking for beautiful beaches, stylish beach clubs and a more trendy feel.

St Lucia

StolenTime by Rendezvous, St Lucia

Best time of year to visit:

St Lucia and romance go hand in hand. The combination of palm fringed beaches and tropical rainforests make it the picture postcard island. Try scuba diving or snorkelling in the Caribbean Sea, take a hike through the spectacular rainforests or bathe in the Toraille waterfall.  Treat yourself to fine dining at Cliff at Cap Restaurant and enjoy a sunset cruise Caribbean style. St Lucia is the perfect destination for a romantic getaway.

For a once in a life time luxury experience it has to be a stay at the Jade Mountain hotel. One of St Lucia’s best hotels, it is located on a hilltop offering stunning views of the Pitons and the Caribbean Sea. This this a nature lovers paradise. Your room, or sanctuary as they like to call them has a private infinity pool, no TV and even WiFi is only available if requested. If escapism, romance and luxury is what you seek then look no further.

American Honeymoons

USA Road Trip

California road trip

Best time of year to visit: April, May, September & October

A California and Las Vegas road trip is a great honeymoon option if you want to see lots of different sides of the USA in one trip. Start in San Francisco and spend a few days exploring the city, seeing the Golden Gate Bridge, walking around Fisherman’s Wharf and taking a trip to Alcatraz.

From San Francisco, hire a car and head towards Yosemite National Park, one of the most beautiful parts of California. Spend a few days exploring the waterfalls, mountains and incredible viewpoints before continuing to Los Angeles where you can visit Hollywood, see the famous Hollywood Sign, explore Beverly Hills and spend some time relaxing on the beaches of Santa Monica or Venice beach.

Continue down the coast to San Diego, which has a much more relaxed feel. Spend time at the beaches, visit La Jolla to see the sea lions and explore the Gaslamp Quarter in the evening.

Finish off your honeymoon in Las Vegas for a complete change of pace. Enjoy the huge choice of restaurants, shows, hotels and nightlife, or simply relax by your hotel pool after your road trip.

I love this itinerary idea because you get a bit of everything. You have big cities, beautiful national parks, beaches, great food and plenty of things to see and do, with Las Vegas adding a fun finish to the trip.

Hawaii

Hawaii is one of the most luxurious holidays avoiding Middle East

Best time of year to visit: March – September

Hawaii is often overlooked for honeymoons, but I think it is a fantastic option if you want a mix of beautiful beaches, culture and some of the most dramatic scenery you will see anywhere.

It is very different from the more traditional paradise islands in the Indian Ocean or South Pacific. Hawaii has a real mix of people, from students and backpackers to couples staying in five star resorts, so there is much more to the islands than just lying by the pool.

There are six main islands, each offering something different. You can relax on beautiful beaches, explore lush rainforests, see waterfalls and volcanic landscapes or get out on the water for snorkelling, boat trips and whale watching depending on the time of year.

Oahu is a great choice for a first visit, with Honolulu, Waikiki Beach and Pearl Harbour, where you can visit the historic World War II sites. Maui is ideal if you want beautiful beaches and scenery, while the Big Island is home to volcanoes and some incredible landscapes.

Hawaii is a great honeymoon choice if you want to combine relaxing beach days with plenty of exploring and experiences. It is also somewhere I would consider if you want something a little different from the usual honeymoon destinations.

Tropical Beach Honeymoons

Sri Lanka

Best time of year to visit: December – March for the south and west coast, and May – September for the east coast

I fell in love with Sri Lanka when I visited a few years ago, and have vowed to go back with my family to show them why. Although located in the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka offers so much more than white sandy beaches and year round sunshine.

There are a staggering eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Sri Lanka. I climbed the 660-feet tall rock fortress of Sigiriya and it was incredible. Sri Lanka has great wildlife too. It is home to the highest concentration of leopards in the world and it is one of the best places to see elephants – there are almost 6,000 of them in Sri Lanka.

I also stayed in the Ceylon Tea Trails Hotel – that is one of the world’s top bucket list holidays in its own right! Sri Lanka is the perfect destination if you want to mix adventure, culture and precious beach time.

Bora Bora, French Polynesia

Bora Bora one of the top bucket list destinations

Best time of year to visit: May – October

Bora Bora has been on my bucket list for years, and it’s easy to see why. Famous for its incredible beauty and a favourite escape for celebrities, Bora Bora is often regarded as one of the world’s ultimate bucket-list destinations, and it certainly lives up to the hype!

Picture turquoise waters, white sandy beaches, lush green mountains and secluded lagoons surrounded by colourful coral reefs. Bora Bora is one of those destinations that really does look as beautiful in real life as it does in the photos.

The waters around the island are full of amazing marine life, making it a fantastic place for snorkelling and diving. You can swim with tropical fish, rays, reef sharks and sea turtles or simply enjoy a boat trip around the lagoon.

There is plenty to do if you want more than just relaxing on the beach. Try kayaking or paddleboarding, take a sunset cruise, go snorkelling or explore the island by boat. You can also hike into the lush interior for incredible views of Mount Otemanu and Mount Pahia.

Of course, you cannot talk about Bora Bora without mentioning the famous overwater bungalows. Wake up with the turquoise lagoon right outside your room, step straight into the water from your private deck and watch the sunset from your own villa. It is easy to see why Bora Bora is such a popular honeymoon choice.

Located in French Polynesia, Bora Bora also works really well as part of a bigger honeymoon. Combine it with Australia or New Zealand, or even California, for an amazing multi centre trip.

Best hotels for honeymoons: Four Seasons Resort, The Brando

Mauritius

mauritius honeymoons

Best time of year to visit: May – November

When you think of Mauritius, luxury hotels, white-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters may spring to mind. While that captures much of the island’s appeal, it only scratches the surface. From snorkelling and whale watching to waterfalls and water sports, fine dining and Creole cuisine, Mauritius is an island of contrasts. One moment you can be relaxing on a beautiful beach, the next exploring lush landscapes, rolling hills and remarkable wildlife.

Mauritius is also an established golf destination, with championship courses set against spectacular coastal and mountain scenery. Combined with its luxury resorts, beautiful beaches and warm hospitality, it is easy to see why the island is so popular for romantic escapes, weddings and honeymoons.

With so many luxury resorts, boutique hotels and beachfront properties to choose from, finding the right one can feel daunting. Whether you are planning a relaxing beach holiday, a golf getaway or one of the most memorable honeymoons, choosing the right hotel can make all the difference.

Best hotels for honeymoons: St. Regis Le Morne Resort, Dinarobin Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa

Multi Centre Honeymoons

Dubai & Maldives Twin Centre Honeymoon

Maldives honeymoons

Best time of year to visit: November – April

The Maldives is one of the world’s best honeymoon destinations and after seeing some of the islands first hand, I can see why, it is one of those destinations where reality is even better than Instagram! Spend your days relaxing on picture-perfect beaches, swimming in crystal clear water, snorkelling among colourful marine life or simply unwinding at your luxury resort. For those looking to add a little more excitement, the Maldives also offers incredible beach clubs, water sports and unforgettable experiences on the ocean.

And I can’t think of a better way to finish off your honeymoon than a few days in glitzy Dubai. From exploring the city’s incredible attractions and enjoying world-class dining to shopping until you drop, relaxing at glamorous beach clubs or heading out on a desert safari, Dubai offers the perfect contrast to the laid back luxury of the Maldives.

Together, the Maldives and Dubai make the ultimate honeymoon combination, two luxurious destinations that give you the best of both worlds. You can slow down and completely relax in the Maldives, before enjoying a little city life, shopping, sightseeing and glamour in Dubai. It’s the perfect mix for honeymooners who want plenty of time to unwind, but also want to experience somewhere exciting and unforgettable along the way.

Zanzibar & Tanzania – Safari & Beach

Zanzibar holiday deals from Ireland for honeymoons

Best time of year to visit: June – October

A Tanzania and Zanzibar two centre honeymoon gives you the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation. Myself and Cormac went on a similar trip about 18 years ago and we still talk about it today.

Start your honeymoon with a safari in Tanzania, visiting the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, two of the best places to see wildlife in Africa. Look out for the Big Five, watch huge herds of wildebeest and zebra roaming the plains and, if you are lucky, spot lions, elephants and cheetahs in their natural habitat.

Then fly over to Zanzibar for a few days of complete relaxation. Spend your days on the island’s beautiful white sandy beaches, swim in the turquoise waters, go snorkelling or diving, take a sunset dhow cruise or explore the historic streets of Stone Town. You can also visit a spice farm or take a trip to see the famous giant tortoises on Prison Island.

It is a brilliant honeymoon combination, giving you an incredible safari adventure followed by beautiful beaches and plenty of time to relax together.

South Africa – Winelands, Garden Route & Safari

safari honeymoons

Best time of year to visit: May – October for safaris and December – March for beaches and coastal cities

If you have been following my adventures for a while, you will know that I love South Africa. I have been twice now and would return in a heart beat.

Cape Town is a superb city, there is so much to see and do. Visit Robben Island, go to the top of Table Mountain and drive the Cape Peninsula Drive. After a few days exploring the sights of Cape Town spend a night in the Winelands in the pretty town of Franschhoek, before setting off along the Garden Route to Plettenberg Bay.

Enjoy some time on the beach and then finish off your trip in Amakhala Game Reserve, a place I can personally recommend.

South Africa is one of my favourite holiday destinations. I love the city of Cape Town, the Garden Route drive, and the numerous safari options that are available. I went on my honeymoon (a long time ago) and returned a few years ago on a family holiday. I can honestly say that a holiday in South Africa is ideal for honeymoons.

There are plenty of romantic hideaways and wine estates for couples, but also plenty to keep the kids amused too. I have lots of posts on South Africa put this one connects them all together.

Best hotels for honeymoons: Kapama River Lodge

Thailand

honeymoons in Thailand

Best time of year to visit: November – April

Thailand is a destination that features on many couples’ honeymoon lists, and I think it offers some of the best value for money. You can spend as much or as little as you like, making it easy to tailor your honeymoon to your budget and the type of experience you want.

My advice is not to overcomplicate things. Stick to two or three islands, or mix the beaches with a few days exploring the north around Chiang Mai, spend some time in Bangkok, or head inland to Khao Sok National Park for a jungle adventure. The choices are endless.

If you are a beach-loving couple, you could choose between Phuket, Koh Phi Phi and Krabi on Thailand’s Andaman coast, or head to the other side of the country for Koh Samui, Koh Tao and Koh Phangan. If you have a whole month, why not do them all?

For something a little different, combine your beach stay with a few nights at Elephant Hills in Khao Sok National Park. Stay in luxury tents surrounded by rainforest, trek through the jungle, explore by traditional longtail boat and canoe along the Sok River, and learn about elephant conservation. It is a fantastic way to add a little adventure to a relaxing beach honeymoon.

Bali, Indonesia

Bali holidays from Ireland

Best time of year to visit: May – October

Bali honeymoons offer a wonderful combination of adventure and culture, as well as tropical beaches and Bali is packed with wonderful sights, culture, beaches, island escapes, beach clubs, wellness retreats and much more. It is also relatively easy to get around and much smaller than Thailand, so if you have less time, you can still see a lot in 9-14 days. For honeymoons, it is a great choice if you want to combine relaxation, culture and a little adventure.

I definitely wouldn’t miss Ubud, which feels like ‘old Bali’. This wholesome cultural town is surrounded by rice fields, temples and spectacular waterfalls, with plenty of opportunities for yoga, meditation and wellness. I would skip the busier areas of Canggu and Seminyak and head instead to Uluwatu, where you’ll find some of Bali’s best beaches and dramatic coastal scenery.

You can also add an island escape to the nearby Gili Islands. If you want a little more life, choose Gili T, which has fantastic beaches, snorkelling and easy boat trips to the other islands. If you are looking for somewhere quieter and more relaxing, Gili Air is a great option.

There are plenty of ways to plan a honeymoon in Bali, whether you want to focus on wellness and relaxation, explore the island’s culture or combine it with a few days on the Gilis. The choice is yours, but Bali makes it easy to create a honeymoon that suits your style and budget.

Vietnam – Cities & Beaches

adventure holidays in Vietnam

Best time of year to visit: December – April

If you’re looking for a honeymoon filled with adventure, culture, incredible food and a little bit of luxury, look no further than Vietnam.

Start your Vietnam honeymoon with 2–3 nights in Hanoi, where you can soak up the city’s fascinating mix of history and modern life. Marvel at the museums, explore bustling markets and watch the endless stream of motorbikes weaving through the streets! Renowned as the culinary capital of Vietnam, Hanoi is also the perfect place to experience a street-food tour, sampling everything from steaming bowls of pho to delicious local delicacies.

From Hanoi, head to the breathtaking Ha Long Bay for an unforgettable overnight cruise. Drift between towering limestone karsts and emerald-green waters, taking in one of Vietnam’s most iconic landscapes. Enjoy delicious meals on board, soak up the scenery and perhaps wake up early for sunrise over the bay, a truly magical honeymoon experience.

Vietnam is often overlooked when it comes to beautiful beaches, but when I visited a few years ago, I was completely blown away by how gorgeous they were. Make your way south to Da Nang and the Hoi An area, the perfect place to slow down, relax and enjoy some well deserved beach time.

Then there’s Hoi An, one of my absolute favourites. This UNESCO World Heritage Site feels like stepping into a fairy tale, with colourful lanterns glowing along the ancient streets, boats sailing down the river and the whole town beautifully illuminated after dark. Make a wish as you float along the river by lantern light, it’s one of those experiences you simply have to see.

Hoi An is also perfect for embracing Vietnamese culture. Try a traditional cooking class, have tailor made outfits created just for you or learn to make your own colourful lanterns. Leave plenty of time to wander the atmospheric streets, enjoy a romantic dinner and soak up the magic of this wonderful town.

Vietnam really does have it all, vibrant cities, incredible cuisine, breathtaking scenery, fascinating culture and beautiful beaches, making it an unforgettable choice for an adventurous and romantic honeymoon.

Minimoon Ideas In Europe

If your big honeymoon is planned for later, or you simply want to keep things short and affordable after the wedding, there are plenty of romantic destinations that are perfect for a minimoon.

Lake Como, Italy

Lake Como

Best time of year to visit: May, June & Early September

Lake Como is a lovely choice for a minimoon, especially if you want something romantic and scenic without spending a week lying on a beach. It is all about beautiful lake views, Italian food, boat trips, pretty villages and long lunches.

You can cruise around the lake, see the grand villas from the water and stop in different villages. A private boat around sunset would be particularly romantic.

Bellagio is probably the most famous town on Lake Como, with pretty cobbled streets, lakefront restaurants, boutiques and beautiful views. Visit the gardens at Villa Melzi, wander around the old town and stop for an aperitivo overlooking the lake. or combine it with a day trip into Milan to see the Duomo, enjoy a spritz in a rooftop bar or simply shop till you drop.

Iceland

Best time of year to visit:

If you are not a fan of hot temperatures and would rather spend your minimoon exploring somewhere completely different, Iceland is a fantastic choice. Think dramatic landscapes, waterfalls, geothermal lagoons and the chance to see the Northern Lights.

There are many places where you can see the Northern Lights, and they have even been spotted in the west of Ireland, but Iceland offers some fantastic opportunities during the darker months. A trip around the Golden Circle and a swim in the Blue Lagoon are musts, while there is so much more to discover across the island.

While Rome is not the cheapest destination, you can definitely find good value flights, especially if you are flexible with your dates.
