Caminito del Rey

Is 2023 the year to try a solo holiday? If reports are anything to go by, it certainly looks like it! Solo travel deals are not always easy to come by. Single rooms in good hotels are like hens teeth, and no one wants to pay a single supplement! However, with more and more people looking to travel solo, hotels and guided group tours are now offering more places for singles.

Porto is the perfect choice. It is a walkable city and most of the top attractions are close together. You will also find great value restaurants and the option for beach time if required.

2. 4-Star Holiday in the Algarve, 3rd May, from €499

Where to stay in Carvoeiro, Algarve

Carvoeiro is one of the Algarve’s prettiest resorts and has been on my wish list for many years – it is ideal for solo travellers who prefer a quieter, laid back resort.

What was once a fishing village, Carvoeiro combines sandy beaches and excellent dining options with traditional Portuguese charm. The pretty town is packed with whitewashed buildings that appear to sit on top of each other as they fit snugly into the surrounding hills.

Many hotels and apartments are located outside the town centre so car hire is recommended, although UBER’s are cheap and both properties below offer a shuttle bus service to the beach and town centre.

Return flights are available from Dublin for €79 on the 3rd of May with Ryanair, and €117 from Cork with Aer Lingus. Prices from Shannon and Knock are also available but are considerably higher. The 4-star Colina da Lapa apartments are €428 for a seven night stay, but dates and durations can be changed to suit your requirements.

I found a deal departing on the 3rd of May from Dublin for €711 including flights and a seven-night stay on a bed and breakfast basis. Similar prices are available from Cork on the 2nd of May.

5. August / September week in Greece from €499

Kos in Greece has great solo travel deals

There is something about Greece that conjures up images of solo travel. I recall Shirley Valentine going to Mykonos in 1989 (way to feel old), and how I couldn’t wait to visit.

Aer Lingus and Ryanair have twice-weekly flights to Kos, and with a cosmopolitan centre, historical sights and superb beaches, there is plenty to keep solo travellers happy.

I found great value flights with Aer Lingus for €183 on the 29th of August, and a seven-night stay in the top rated Michalis Studios & Apartments is only €316. A trip to Zakynthos town is also worthwhile, but for me the beauty lies in just chilling out its gorgeous beaches, and enjoying Greek food in beachside tavernas.

We loved the laid back atmosphere, and although some resorts are very much developed for tourists, it is still possible to find unspoilt Greek villages and authentic experiences.

However, there is more to a holiday in Florida than Universal Studios and Walt Disney World. There are numerous water parks to choose from as well as Legoland, Peppa Pig World, and the Kennedy Space Center, which is just an hour’s drive away. And don’t forget the shopping! You need to allow a full day to explore the Florida Mall and the Premium Outlets..

I have chosen one of Universal Studios’ Hotels –  Endless Summer Resort, the hotel that we stayed in last year. Not only has this new resort got family friendly facilities, but once you purchase park tickets, you will receive early access to Universal Studios parks, one hour before the parks open, and get free transport to and from the parks. Family rooms and large family suites are available that can cater for families of six.

October Bank Holiday in Santorini, Flights & Apartment, 1 week, €527

oia-416135_1280_opt

Scratch one off the bucket list and enjoy a Santorini holiday over the October bank holiday weekend this year.

Santorini has been on my bucket list for many years, and I’m finally getting to visit this summer! The picture postcard villages of Oia and Fira have to be one of the best places in the world to watch the sunset – and this Santorini holiday is the best way to see them.

holiday deal to Santorini

The island is quite small, so if you choose to stay on the beach side, you will never be longer than 30 minutes bus ride from the stunning villages of Oia, Imerovigli and Fira. The beach resorts have plenty of restaurants and bars and accommodation here offers better value for money.

I often see luxury hotels and Airbnbs in Santorini with private pools being advertised, but it is also possible to book a Santorini holiday on a budget – there are plenty of three star hotel options to choose from, even staying in the popular resorts of Oia and Fira.

holiday deal to Santorini
I found flights with Aer Lingus for the October mid term break, return flights are €350 per person from Dublin airport. A Santorini holiday in October should see less crowds than the peak summer months, and average temperatures for the same date last year were a balmy 70 degrees!

I have chosen a variety of hotel options below, but there are many more options available. The well rated Zacharakis apartments receive good reviews on TripAdvisor and are a great choice for anyone looking for a relaxing break in Santorini on a budget.

Price for a seven night stay is €177 per person, based on two sharing. Want to bring the kids along? Family studios are available from €697 for seven nights.

The San Giorgio Hotel is another great value choice. It is located in the heart of Fira and is rated Excellent on TripAdvisor. A double room is €292 for seven nights and a two-bedroom family room here is €1089.

The 4-star Abasa Suites are located just outside the centre of Fira and are popular with families. A family suite including breakfast is €1485 for seven nights.
