Nerja Spain: 10 Top Things to do in Nerja, Where to Stay, Dine and Explore
From water activities and restaurant recommendations to the best beaches and day trips nearby, we have rounded up the best things to do in Nerja to help you make the most of your visit.
Nerja is a place that had been on my bucket list for over 20 years. When I was a travel agent, I sent many clients to stay in this gorgeous whitewashed town, home to the famous Balcony of Europe, and I kept meaning to visit myself. So I was delighted to finally get there this year.
I had always known it was one of the prettiest resorts on the Costa del Sol and had heard great things about its food scene, but it was Nerja’s spectacular coastline and laid-back atmosphere that really won me over. The water is crystal clear and superb for snorkelling, something I have not found in other resorts along the Costa del Sol. While the main beaches were busier than I expected, there are plenty of hidden coves to discover, so I highly recommend getting off the beaten track or taking a boat or kayak out to explore the coastline.
I have highlighted some of these day trip ideas below, along with the top things to do in Nerja and nearby. I also have the best places to stay in Nerja and some great restaurant recommendations.
Top things to do in Nerja
1. Take in the view from Balcon de Europa
The Balcón de Europa is Nerja’s most famous landmark and a great place to visit on your first day. Built into a cliff overlooking the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean, it offers gorgeous views of the coastline and the beaches on either side.
A tree-lined walkway leads from the Old Town to the Balcón, and the whole plaza is an attraction in itself. Its central location also makes it a great place to stop for a cocktail or coffee, admire the views and simply watch the world go by.
2. Visit all of Nerja’s beaches
When you arrive in Nerja, you will immediately notice three beaches in the centre of town. La Caletilla is a small beach beside the Balcón de Europa Hotel, while El Salón and Calahonda sit on either side and are more easily accessible. These beaches can get extremely busy, and sunbeds are not always easy to come by.
However, if you are planning a full day at the beach, especially during peak season, I suggest walking about 10 minutes to Torrecilla Beach or 20 minutes to Burriana Beach, the largest and most popular beach in Nerja. Burriana has a huge selection of restaurants and bars, as well as watersports and plenty of sun loungers.
Top Tip: During peak summer season, sunbeds need to be pre booked a day in advance, but only cost €6, which is good value for Mediterranean standards.
If you are looking for something a little more secluded, check out Maro Beach, around 4km from the centre of Nerja. This protected natural cove is tucked beneath dramatic cliffs and is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful beaches in the area. There are many more Nerja beaches and coves to discover and a boat or kayak is the best way to find them.
3. Go Kayaking
Kayaking is one of the top things to do in Nerja, and once you see the crystal clear water you will understand why. There are many different trips and tours you can take, you can also explore independently, but this top-rated tour 2.5 hour tour from Burriana Beach is amazing value at just €35 and includes swim stops and a trip to Maro Waterfall.
This tour is suitable for children over 4, making it one of the top things to in Nerja with kids and teenagers. Throughout the tour, photos and videos are recorded on a GoPro camera which you can download when you return.
4. Rent a boat – without a license!
If you prefer the idea of exploring by boat rather than kayak, you can actually rent a boat in Nerja without a licence. Cruise along the coastline at your own pace, discovering hidden coves and caves, seeing the famous Maro waterfall and admiring the Balcón de Europa from the sea.
This top-rated half-day boat rental costs €320 and can accommodate up to six passengers.
5. Explore Frigilana
Located just a 10–15 minute drive from Nerja, the whitewashed village of Frigiliana is one of the prettiest villages in Andalusia. We drove from Nerja, but you can easily catch a bus for around €1.30 or a taxi for approximately €13. It is one of those places where you do not need a long list of attractions to visit, the village itself is the attraction.
We loved strolling through its narrow cobbled streets and stopping for a coffee and a drink with stunning views over the surrounding countryside. You can easily see the highlights in around 90 minutes, but if time allows, it would also be a lovely place to stay for lunch or dinner.
Top Tip: Don’t book the tourist train, it only tours outside the Old Town.
6. Have Paella at Ayos on Burriana Beach
Ayo’s is practically an institution in Nerja, and once you see it, you will understand why. Do not expect a fancy restaurant, it is more like one big open-air canteen, but it is famous for serving some of the best paella in Nerja since 1969.
Locals and tourists queue to taste the traditional paella, which is cooked over an open fire in enormous pans. You will probably see a large queue when you arrive, but it tends to move quickly. Located right on Burriana Beach, if you like paella and are in the area, do not miss it.
7. Visit Nerja Caves
When I asked my followers on Instagram what they thought were the top things to do in Nerja, I was surprised by how many mentioned the Nerja Caves. Little did I know they are one of Nerja’s top attractions.
Only discovered in 1959 and located just a few kilometres from the centre of Nerja, these caves are filled with impressive stalactites, stalagmites and dramatic rock formations.
The naturally cool temperature makes them an ideal place to visit if you need a break from the heat, particularly during the summer months. Children will enjoy the VR experience here too, making a visit to here one of the top family attractions in Nerja.
8. Take a hike
Nerja has a great selection of hiking trails, including the famous Pico el Cielo for experienced hikers, but if you just want a taste of the scenery, the coastal trail through Maro and the Cerro Gordo Natural Park is ideal.
You will discover secluded beaches, dramatic cliffs and enjoy stunning coastal views along the way. This top-rated four-hour tour from Viator departs from Nerja, includes transportation from your hotel and also allows time for swimming and snorkelling.
9. Shop Nerja’s boutiques
Nerja may not be renowned for its shopping, but I loved exploring the boutiques in the Old Town. I picked up some local jewellery and a few summer dresses for myself and my daughter, including the one above, which was only €25!
There is also a local market every Tuesday selling clothing, accessories and local goods. And if all else fails, you will usually find beach sellers offering imitation designer bags, sunglasses and other accessories along the seafront.
10. Book a day trip
Nerja is wonderfully placed for exploring some of Andalucia’s most impressive sights on a day trip. I recently visited Ronda and Setenil de las Bodegas in one day and cannot recommend this day trip highly enough. I also walked the spectacular Caminito del Rey cliff path a few years ago, which is another excellent option if you are looking for something a little more adventurous.

It is also possible to book a day tour to Granada to visit the Alhambra, with return transportation from Nerja included. Alternatively, if you prefer to explore independently, Málaga is a great option and is less than an hour’s drive away, with its historic centre, museums, shops and excellent food scene.

Where to stay in Nerja – Top 10 Nerja Hotels and Apartments
You may be surprised to learn that there are no 5 star Nerja hotels, but there are a great selection of 4 star hotels and some excellent 3 star boutique hotels to choose from – in fact some of the most top-rated hotels in Nerja are three star!
3 Star Boutique Nerja Hotels
1. Hotel Carabeo
With a superb location in the heart of Nerja, direct beachfront access, a saltwater swimming pool, sun terrace, and pretty garden, it is no surprise that is one of the most top rated boutique Nerja hotels. It is also famous as being the location for one of Nerja’s best restaurants, Restaurant 34 – see more on this below.
2. MB Boutique Hotel
The MB Boutique Hotel is one of the best-rated hotels in Nerja on TripAdvisor and was a Travellers’ Choice Award winner this year. Although officially a three-star hotel, it has been recently refurbished and is regarded as a small luxury hotel. It is best suited to adults, although guests aged 13 and over are welcome.
Located in the centre of Nerja, just 200 metres from the beach and a 10-minute walk from the Balcón de Europa, it is ideally placed for exploring the town. While it does not have a swimming pool, it does have a Rooftop Chillout Terrace, complete with two large jacuzzis, Balinese beds and music until 2am. There is also a café serving complimentary breakfast until 11.30am.
3. Hotel Plaza Cavana
This highly-rated hotel is located just steps from the Balcon de Europa and the beach. There are great value economy rooms as well as single rooms, doubles with terrace and family rooms. There is also a small rooftop swimming pool and snack bar that serves cocktails.
4. Hotel Puerta del Mar
Another top-rated 3 star hotel, the Puerta del Mar is superbly located, with the Balcón de Europa and beach just 100 metres away. It has a rooftop saltwater pool and sun terrace with loungers. Breakfast is also included in your stay.
4 Star Nerja Hotels
5. Balcon de Europa Hotel
Built into the cliffs at the Balcón de Europa, this iconic hotel is arguably the best place to stay in Nerja. We stayed here and loved the location, service and dining options.
The complimentary breakfast is particularly good, and make sure to reserve at table for dinner at Nautica Beach Club. It also has direct access to Caletilla Beach, and boasts an infinity swimming pool and terrace. The hotel is pet-friendly too!
6. Riu Monica
The adult-only Riu Monica is a top-rated 4 star hotel in Nerja with direct beach access to Torrecilla Beach and just 10-12 minutes walk from the Balcon de Europa. You will also find two swimming pools, sun terrace, fitness centre, health and beauty centre, restaurant, bar and evening entertainment here. This hotel is often priced with breakfast and evening meal included, making it a great value stay in Nerja.
7. Perla Marina
Located about 15 minutes walk from the Balcon de Europa, the Perla Marina is usually well priced compared to some of the other 4 star hotels Nerja. It has direct beach access to a small beach and the larger Playa Torrecilla is just five minutes walk away. Breakfast is also included in your stay.
Self Catering Apartments in Nerja
8. Ona Marinas de Nerja Spa Resort
Located right on the Punta Lara Beach, the Marinas de Nerja is one of the most popular family apartments in Nerja. There is a choice of accommodation including studios, one and two bedroom apartments, some boasting impressive sea views.
There is a buffet and beachfront restaurant as well as a two pools, one for adults and one for children, a poolside bar, lounge and Spa with heated plunge pool, Turkish baths, sauna and gym. There is also a Mini Club, games area and day and evening entertainment in peak season.
Breakfast is usually included in the cost of your stay but you can also upgrade to half board or all inclusive. It is one of the few options for all inclusive hotels Nerja as it is located 5 minutes drive or a 30 minute walk to the Old Town.
9. Nerja Villas Capistrano
The Nerja Villas Capistrano is a great choice for large families or friends looking for a villa in Nerja with the benefits of hotel facilities.
Set in extensive gardens with two pools, tennis and paddle tennis courts, as well as a bar, restaurant, mini market and bicycle hire, it is no surprise that is is one of the best places to stay in Nerja for families. There is a local bus service to the town centre and the beach, which is just 5 minutes drive away.
10. Apartments Toboso Apar – Turis
If you are looking for an apartment in Nerja in the Old Town, the top-rated Toboso Apar – Turis is hard to beat. Located beside the beach, next to the Balcón de Europa, the location couldn’t be better! You will be treated to a indoor and outdoor pool, gym, and two dining options, although with Nerja’s great restaurants on your door step, you may not need them!
Where to eat in Nerja – Best Nerja restaurants
I was really impressed by the variety and quality of food available in the restaurants in Nerja. I have listed some of my favourites along with the most recommended that we didn’t get a chance to visit.
Restaurant 34: Iconic restaurant in the centre of the Old Town with stunning sea views. Make sure to pre book a table on the terrace at the front.
Scarlettas: One of the most popular restaurants in Nerja for steaks, make sure to book in advance.Tip: book a rooftop table.
La Bottega: This was one of the most recommended restaurants in Nerja but was booked out a week in advance when I tried it – Italian / Mediterranean food.
Nautica Beach Club: This beachfront restaurant in the Balcon de Europa Hotel has a stunning setting and offers a relaxed casual atmosphere and prices were very reasonable. I loved the goats cheese salad and fresh seabass.
Esquina Paulina and La Puntilla were both recommended to me for having some of the best tapas in Nerja.
Olivia: A must visit for food lovers, the food in this fine dining restaurant is exceptional, although it is expensive. I would go so far as to say the food was Michelin Star quality, and I was actually amazed it didn’t have a star, it must be one of the best restaurants in Nerja.
Pinnochio: Delicious pizza and great value.
Copa Vino: Great wine bar serving tasty food – apparently one of Nerja’s best kept secrets!
Top Tip: Make sure to book these restaurants at least a week in advance in peak season.
How to get to Nerja
We flew from Dublin to Malaga with Aer Lingus who offer a daily service, along with Ryanair. There are numerous direct flights from most Irish and European airports to Malaga, which is the closest airport to Nerja, and can be reached in about 45 -55 minutes by car.
The best time to visit Nerja
Nerja is particularly popular during the summer months, with July and August being particularly busy and temperatures can reach 35 degrees. If you are flexible on dates I suggest you visit May, June, September or October – temperatures should still mild, accommodation is more reasonably priced. and there will be less crowds.
Nerja usually enjoys a mild climate during the winter months, with daytime temperatures often reaching the high teens, making it a good choice for sightseeing and walking. However, it is worth noting that the Costa del Sol has experienced more rainfall than usual over the past two winters, so some wet days are possible.
