Thinking about some family staycations over the October mid term break? I’ve got family friendly Irish hotels and self catering apartments and houses to suit all tastes and budgets.

If you are planning some family staycations over the October mid term break, I’ve got you covered! I know many of you are looking for cheap hotel deals, others might want a bit of luxury, and many are looking for self catering accommodation with hotel facilities. I have tried to cater for everyone and have plenty of variety below.

Most family staycations are based on a two-night family stay, however I have also included some overnight Halloween package deals with meals and activities included. All kids want to stay in a castle, right? Kerry’s only authentic castle hotel is surrounded by 30 acres of private gardens and woodland and is steeped in history. Ballyseede Castle is also known for its traditional Irish cuisine and fine dining, as well as its much loved resident, an Irish Wolfhound.

 

The Lodge family room has two double beds and offers great value for a family castle stay in Ireland. You are also ideally placed to explore the Ring of Kerry and the Wild Atlantic Way.

2. Waterford: Mount Congreve Cabins, 2ad & 2ch (Weekend Stay ) €482

I enjoyed a fabulous overnight escape at Mount Congreve Gardens and it is the perfect treat for families looking for unique accommodation in 72 acres of gardens, beside the Waterford Greenway. Adults can use the private hot tub, while children will enjoy the after hours access to the Gardens which have a large playground and family friendly amenities.

3. Laois: Midlands Park Hotel, Family Room, 2 Nights, €304

The Midlands Park Hotel is located in the centre of Portlaoise and has the added benefit of a leisure club with a 22 metre pool and a kids club onsite. We stayed here last year and loved its family friendly facilities and super service. There is a choice of dining options available, including Kelly’s Steakhouse which I can highly recommend.

4. Sligo: Clayton Hotel & Leisure Club,  2-bedroom Family Room, 2 Nights, €378

Set on expansive grounds, yet within walking distance of Sligo Town centre, the 4-star Clayton Sligo ticks all boxes for a family holiday in Ireland. We enjoyed a family staycation here recently and loved it. The leisure centre has a separate kids pool, and there is a mini golf course, games room and sensory room on-site.

5. Sligo: Ocean Sands Hotel, Enniscrone, Family Room, 2 Nights, €378

9. Dublin: Croke Park Hotel, Double Double Room, 2 Nights, €327

If you are looking for great value family hotels over Halloween break then look no further than the top-rated Croke Park Hotel. Football fans will love that they are staying right opposite Croke Park Stadium – be sure to book a the Skyline tour – it is one of the best family activities in Dublin for children 12 and above. The views from the top are incredible and the admission includes entrance to the GAA museum afterwards.

This top-rated 4-star hotel has a popular restaurant on site and Dublin city centre can be reached in 25 minutes by foot, or even less by metro or bus.

10. Meath: Púca Festival at Decoy Country Cottages, 3 Nights from €1061

This years Púca festival is on from the 29th October to 1st November 2026, and includes live music and comedy performances from top artists as well fire rituals, spooky activities and storytelling for all the family to enjoy. 

The top rated Decoy Country Cottages are within easy reach of the festival hubs and have a range of cottages available from one to four bedrooms. They offer all the advantages of a self-catering holiday with the added bonus of having superb onsite facilities.

Children will love the alpaca, pony and pet goat, and the Kids Den has toys and books for younger children, as well as a games room and fitness suite upstairs. Every possible need for babies and toddlers can be supplied free of charge, including a stair-gate, baby bouncer etc. They are pet friendly too!

Price for a weekend stay in the 2 bedroom Coach House is €979 for two nights or €1061 for three nights for a family of five, arriving on the 29th of October for the festival.

11. Laois: Glamping Under The Stars, Hobbit House – Sleeps 6 from €399

I had the pleasure of visiting Glamping under the Stars a few years ago and loved staying in these cute Hobbit Houses. As well as a unique family holiday in Ireland, they are so well equipped that they offer the best of both worlds – a back to nature escape with all the modern comforts of home.

The newly opened luxurious 2 and 3-bedroom houses take the term glamping to a whole new level. All have a unique theme with murals from local artists and include ensuite bathrooms, kitchen, as well as a large, elevated deck or patio.

There is also a communal ‘Glamp House’ has a kitchen & dining area with a barbecue deck, campfire area, as well as children’s playhouse, sandpit and fairyhouse.

Prices from €399 for 2 nights in a standard hobbit house sleeping up to six. The luxury 2 bedroom Honeycomb House is €799 and the three bedroom Seanchai’s House is €899, sleeping six and eight respectively.

As the name suggests they are situated just two minutes walk from the Blue Flag Garryvoe Beach, however you can also avail of the leisure centre and swimming pool at the nearby Garryvoe Hotel, for a nominal daily charge.

14. Kilkenny: Kilkenny Ormonde Hotel, Family Room, 2 Nights €440

The Kilkenny Ormonde is practically a landmark in Kilkenny City, and is located just minutes away from the Medieval Mile. Its brasserie and lively bar attract locals as well as visitors, and it is the only city hotel in Kilkenny that has a leisure centre and spa.

A kids club operates during school holidays, making it a firm favourite for family staycations over the October mid term break, and Kilkenny’s Feasts and Beasts Festival is on over the weekend.

16. Donegal: Ballyliffin Lodge & Spa, 2 Nights, 2ad & 2ch, €334

The Inishowen Peninsula is one of my favourite places in Ireland, and the Ballyliffin Hotel is perfectly located to explore it. Make sure to seek out Kinnagoe Bay and Mamore Gap, two of Ireland’s true hidden gems and spend some time exploring Malin Head. You could also combine Inishowen with a trip to Derry city, it is only 35 minutes drive from the hotel.

19. Kildare: Kilashee Hotel, B&B, 2 Nights, 2ad & 2ch €370

The newly refurbished 4-star Kilashee Hotel is situated on a 55 acre estate with fairy forest trail, Butterfly Garden, and a playground with a zipline. The leisure centre boasts a 25 metre swimming pool, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi, as well as a children’s pool.

The hotel usually runs spooky events over the Halloween break with face painting and games.

20. Cork: Charleville Park Hotel, Family Room, 2 Nights, €382

21. Kildare: 5 Star Carton House, 2 Nights, 2ad & 2ch €594

Following an extensive redesign, Carton House is now Ireland’s only Fairmont managed hotel. Adults will love the Carton House Spa is housed in the 18th century mill building, and boasts an 18 metre swimming pool, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi, as well as a two-storey gymnasium, while children will love the swimming pool, playground and its proximity to Emerald Park, just 30 minutes away.

Price of €594 is based on a two-night stay for 2 adults and 2 children on the 25th of October. There are other dates available but the number of rooms available at this price are limited, so you will need to act fast!
