About Albufeira

What was once a pretty fishing village is now home to one of the Algarve’s busiest resorts. You will find a fabulous beach, Fisherman’s Beach, as well as an attractive Old Town with cobblestone streets that are packed with lively bars and souvenir shops.

There is also a modern area known as ‘The Strip’ in adjacent Montechoro, which is lined with plenty of bars and restaurants, and has the stunning beach of Praia d’Oura at the bottom. Praia da Falesia is another beach nearby, that tends to attract a quieter clientele, as well as families.

Albufeira has some of the best nightlife on the Algarve so is ideally suited to young couples or groups looking for a lively holiday. However, it is also popular with families, and some of the smaller villages on the outskirts of Albufeira have some excellent family-friendly properties.

Top Things to do in Albufeira

1. Benagil Caves Boat Tour

best things to do inalbufeira - Benagil Caves

One of the best things to do in Albufeira is take a boat trip along the coast to the famous Benagil Sea Caves. Suitable for all ages, these excursions are a fantastic way to spend time with family or friends while discovering one of the region’s most spectacular natural attractions.

As you cruise along the coastline, you will pass dramatic cliffs, hidden beaches, crystal clear waters and impressive sea caves, with plenty of opportunities to take photographs and admire the breathtaking scenery. Sarah enjoyed a similar boat trip a few years ago with her friends and said exploring the Algarve from the water was one of the highlights of her holiday.

2. Aquashow Waterpark

things to do in Albufeira - aquashow water park

One of the best things to do in Albufeira with kids is spending a day at Aquashow Water Park, although it is just as much fun for adults. One of the largest water parks in the Algarve, Aquashow is home to Europe’s largest water roller coaster and Portugal’s largest wave pool.

Younger children are well catered for too, with the Aquakids area designed especially for little ones. With a huge variety of water slides, attractions and shows, there is something to keep every member of the family entertained all day.

3. Play a round of golf

golf in the algrave

If you are staying in Albufeira, you are perfectly placed to enjoy some of Europe’s finest golf. The Algarve is home to more than 30 courses, benefiting from a mild year round climate and an impressive variety of layouts, from coastal links inspired designs to world class championship resort courses.

Among the golf courses closest to Albufeira, Salgados Golf Course is one of the most popular. Set beside a protected lagoon and nature reserve, it features water hazards on many holes and has a flat, open layout with a links style feel.

Pine Cliffs Golf Course is one of the Algarve’s most photographed golf courses. Although it is a nine hole course, its dramatic clifftop setting above Praia da Falésia makes it a memorable place to play.

Experienced golfers may wish to play at the Monte Rei Golf & Country Club near Tavira, around an hour’s drive from Albufeira. Designed by Jack Nicklaus, it is widely regarded as one of the finest golf courses in the Algarve. Closer to Albufeira, the Old Course Vilamoura (around a 20-minute drive) and Quinta do Lago (around a 40-minute drive) are both excellent championship courses.

4. Enjoy a Beach Club

beach club

Enjoy a day at one of Albufeira’s many fantastic beach clubs. This year, I visited NoSoloÁgua Albufeira and thought it was lovely. It is more of a beach bar with sunbeds than a traditional beach club, but it is still a great place to unwind. There is no pool, but you can relax on a comfortable sunbed and enjoy a delicious lunch and cocktails at the restaurant while taking in the sea views.

If you are looking for a beach club with a pool, I would recommend NoSoloÁgua Portimão, Well Beach Club in Vale do Lobo, or Purobeach Vilamoura, all of which offer a stylish setting for a day of good vibes, swimming, and great food and drinks.

5. Zoomarine

zoomarina one of the best things to do in Albufeira for families

One of the most popular family days out near Albufeira is Zoomarine Algarve, a mix of marine life exhibits, live presentations, water attractions and family friendly rides all in one park. It is easy to spend a full day here, whether you fancy taking in the shows, or cooling off in the wave pool.

Zoomarine offers a balance of entertainment and relaxation for all ages, making it a popular choice for families looking for a break from the beach.

6. Bar Crawl or Boat Party

If travelling with a group, a bar crawl is essential, especially if it is your first visit to Albufeira. It is one of the easiest ways to get a feel for the nightlife, discover some of the best bars, and work out where you will want to spend the rest of your evenings. The atmosphere is lively, sociable and perfect for meeting other travellers.

If you fancy getting out on the water with a few drinks, a boat party is another experience worth considering. Popular for a reason, these trips combine stunning Algarve coastline views with music, drinks and a fun party atmosphere.

7. Day out in Vilamoura

the travel expert Vilamoura

Vilamoura is often described as the Puerto Banús of the Algarve, with a stunning marina lined with luxury yachts, waterfront restaurants and stylish bars, although it feels a little more relaxed and less flashy than its Spanish counterpart. Just a 20 minute drive from Albufeira, it makes for an easy day trip. Spend a few hours strolling around the marina, stop for lunch overlooking the boats, browse the shops, or enjoy a cocktail at one of the many waterfront venues.

8. Designer Outlet Shopping

shopping

If you are looking for something to do on your last day, or simply fancy a break from the beach, head to the Algarve Designer Outlet and shop till you drop. Browse brands including Puma, Guess, Adidas, Boss and Tommy Hilfiger, with discounts of up to 70% available all year round. The outlet is open seven days a week from 10am to 10pm.

9. Beach Hopping

Algarve beach things to do in Albufeira

One of the best free things to do in Albufeira is spend the day beach hopping along the stunning Algarve coastline. You are spoilt for choice with the area’s golden beaches, making Albufeira the perfect base for exploring a mix of wide sandy bays and hidden coves, each with its own character.

Start at Praia dos Pescadores in the heart of the Old Town before wandering to Praia do Peneco. Then head west to the striking cliffs and crystal clear waters of Praia de São Rafael. If you prefer long stretches of sand for scenic walks, Praia da Falésia is famous for its dramatic red cliffs, while Praia da Galé offers a more peaceful atmosphere.

Many of these beaches are linked by coastal paths or are just a short drive apart, making it easy to discover some of the Algarve’s most beautiful coastline without spending a penny.

10. Cocktail Making

cocktail making albufeira

This is especially good for groups, girls’ trips or hen parties.. It is a fun way to start an evening out and gives everyone the chance to get involved, whether you are a cocktail lover or simply looking for something different to do. Shake up some cocktails, enjoy a game of beer pong, and tuck into some tasty nibbles while spending quality time together.

We chose Coco Loco Bar in the heart of Albufeira New Town, just off the strip, and found it to be excellent value. The staff were friendly, the drinks were generous, and the whole experience felt well organised. After the class, you are already in a perfect location to continue your night and make the most of the nearby bars and lively nightlife.

Albufeira Resort Guide – Where To Stay In Albufeira

old town Albufeira things to do in Albufeira

Old Town is the heart of Albufeira, full of traditional Portuguese charm with cobbled streets, whitewashed buildings, lively squares and a beautiful sandy beach. It is one of my favourite areas because I love wandering through the buzzing squares, which are packed with gorgeous restaurants, fun bars and plenty of places to sit outside and soak up the atmosphere. It definitely feels livelier than it did a few years ago, especially in the evenings, but it still manages to keep its character and charm.

During the day, it has a relaxed feel that is perfect for exploring, shopping or heading down to the beach, while at night there is live music and a fantastic atmosphere without feeling quite as full on as the Strip. I think it is best suited to couples, families and anyone who enjoys nightlife but is looking for something a little more grown up.

New Town is centred around the famous Strip (Avenida Francisco Sá Carneiro) and is known for its lively nightlife, modern hotels and huge choice of bars, clubs and restaurants. I really like this area because there is so much going on, but it is not just about the nightlife. You are also close to some stunning beaches, making it easy to spend your days relaxing by the sea before heading out in the evening.

While it is definitely the livelier side of Albufeira, you do not have to be in the middle of the party all the time. If you wander a little away from the Strip, you will find plenty of bars and restaurants with a much more relaxed atmosphere where you can enjoy a quieter drink or meal. Its a great resort for younger travellers, groups of friends and anyone who enjoys having lots of entertainment and beautiful beaches all within easy reach.

Santa Eulalia sits between the Old Town and New Town, offering the best of both worlds. It has a beautiful beach, a good selection of restaurants and bars, and a more relaxed nightlife than the Strip. It is well suited to couples, families and visitors who want easy access to Albufeira’s attractions without being in the centre of the action.

Olhos de Água offers a quieter and more traditional Algarve experience. This charming fishing village has a lovely beach, excellent seafood restaurants and a relaxed pace, making it popular with families, couples and those wanting a peaceful escape while remaining close to Albufeira.

Falesia is a peaceful resort famous for its spectacular golden cliffs and one of the Algarve’s longest sandy beaches. The area has a relaxed atmosphere with a good selection of restaurants, cafés and beachfront hotels, while remaining within easy reach of Albufeira’s livelier attractions. It is an excellent choice for couples, families and golfers looking for a relaxing beach holiday with beautiful coastal scenery.

Sao Rafael is an upmarket area known for its stunning coastline, secluded coves and luxury accommodation. The atmosphere is peaceful , making it perfect for couples or travellers looking to relax in beautiful surroundings.

Gale is a quieter resort with long sandy beaches, excellent golf courses and a laid back atmosphere. It is a great choice for families, couples and visitors who enjoy outdoor activities, coastal walks and a slower pace of life. There are many villas located here.

How to get to Albufeira, The Algarve

how to get to albuferia

To reach Albufeira, you need to fly into Faro Airport (FAO), which is around a 40 minute drive from the resort. From Ireland, there are direct flights from all Irish airports depending on the time of year. Once you arrive, you can reach Albufeira by private transfer, taxi, shuttle bus or hire car, making it a quick and straightforward journey to the resort.

Best Time to Visit Albufeira

The Algarve is a great destination to visit at any time of year. If you want guaranteed sunshine, warm temperatures and long beach days, the summer months are ideal. However, this is also the high season, so many resorts can be extremely busy in July and August.

The summer heat can be intense, with temperatures regularly climbing above 30°C, although the Algarve’s Atlantic coastline often benefits from a refreshing sea breeze and cooler sea temperatures especially in the evening time.

Sarah and I have visited in May on a few occasions and have always enjoyed fantastic weather. September and early October are also excellent times to visit, with warm temperatures, pleasant sea conditions and fewer crowds after the peak summer season. From late October to April, the weather can be more unpredictable, although there are still plenty of bright, mild days.

Regardless of when you visit the Algarve, there are always plenty of opportunities to enjoy beautiful beach walks, excellent golf courses and delicious dining options. If you are travelling during the winter months, I suggest choosing a hotel with an indoor pool or a good programme of daily activities, as there are plenty of excellent options available.
