Best places to visit in Europe in October
1. Amalfi Coast, Italy

The Amalfi Coast is a great place to visit in October, with Positano and Amalfi far less crowded than during the peak summer months. As the intense heat fades and the busiest season winds down, the coastline takes on a calmer, more relaxed atmosphere. Flights and accommodation also tend to offer better value at this time of year.
With its more comfortable temperatures and quieter towns, the Amalfi Coast is consistently regarded as one of the best places to visit in October for couples and scenic coastal escapes.
Daytime temperatures usually sit around 24°C, falling to about 12°C in the evening, which makes exploring very comfortable. Boat trips along the coast are far more enjoyable without the summer crowds, and wandering through the narrow streets feels more peaceful and unhurried.
It is also a great time to mix in other activities. Hiking the Path of the Gods offers clear views without the scorching summer sun, visiting nearby towns like Ravello feels less rushed, and local restaurants are easier to book while still offering a lively atmosphere. Vineyard visits and cooking classes are also more accessible during this quieter period.
Getting around is generally smoother too. While roads can still be winding and slow, public transport tends to be more manageable, and trains connecting to the region are typically far less hectic than during peak summer months, making travel days feel much less stressful.

2. Santorini, Greece

October is one of the best times to visit Santorini. The summer crowds have gone, hotel prices are lower and temperatures have been surprisingly high over the past few years – check out last year’s temperatures here, they were over 20 degrees during the day.
Catch the famous sunset in Oia, explore the hill top towns of Fira and Imerovigli, and book a cave suite with a view of the Caldera for the ultimate bucket list experience.

The Meltemi winds are much weaker in October too, which makes ferry crossings smoother and beach days more comfortable, so if you fancy doing some island hopping to nearby Milos, one of Sarah’s favourite Greek Islands, it is a great month to do it.

3. Malaga, Spain

While many people skip Málaga city and head straight for the beach towns along the Costa del Sol, it has definitely grown in popularity in recent years, and for good reason. It has everything you need for a well rounded city break, with great food, a beach, a lively historic centre and plenty of shopping.
Málaga is also one of the oldest cities in Western Europe, after Lisbon and Cádiz, and its historic centre is a pleasure to explore.
October is a perfect time to visit, with warm weather and far fewer crowds than in peak summer. Daytime temperatures usually range from around 22 to 26°C, with plenty of sunshine and very little rain, making it ideal for both sightseeing and relaxing by the sea.

Cyprus is one of the best places to visit in October, offering warm, pleasant weather that is far more comfortable than the peak summer months. It is an ideal period for spending time along the coastline in areas such as Paphos, Limassol and Ayia Napa, where you can enjoy relaxed beach days, boat trips and coastal walks.
Beyond the coast, October is also well suited for exploring historical sites such as Kourion and the Tombs of the Kings, without the intense summer heat. Inland, the Troodos Mountains offer cooler air and scenic hiking trails through forests and traditional villages. You can also enjoy wine tasting in local vineyards, wandering through historic old towns, and dining outdoors in the evenings when the temperatures are still comfortably mild.

How to get there:
Fly direct from Dublin to Paphos or direct from Belfast to Paphos or Larnaca.
5. Romania – Transylvania & Bucharest

If you want a seasonal break that lines up with Halloween at the end of October, a trip to Transylvania in Romania is a great choice. The region is known for its medieval towns and dramatic castles, including Bran Castle, a Gothic fortress famously linked to the legend of Dracula.
Halloween in Transylvania brings cooler weather, with daytime highs around 15°C and lows of about 4°C. You can expect a mix of golden sunny days along with mist, rain, and fog, which adds to the moody, atmospheric setting. It is best to pack layers, including a warm jacket, especially for evenings.
While you are there, there are plenty of activities to enjoy beyond castle visits. Explore the colourful streets of Brașov, hike in the Carpathian Mountains for scenic autumn views, or visit traditional villages for a glimpse into rural Romanian life. Guided night tours and Halloween themed events are also popular during this time of year if you fancy a spooky tour.
You can easily combine your trip with a stop in the Romanian capital, Bucharest. The city offers a charming Old Town, lively cafés, and excellent shopping. Make time for Palace of the Parliament, one of the largest buildings in the world, or unwind at the popular Therme Bucharest spa.

6. Istanbul, Turkey

Istanbul is one of my favourite cities in the world, and it completely took me by surprise. I arrived with no real expectations or preconceptions, yet it quickly became a destination I would return to again and again. Often overlooked for a European city break, Istanbul offers incredible value for money, rich culture, amazing food, and a completely different atmosphere from anywhere else in Europe. I would highly recommend adding it to your list.
October is one of the most pleasant months for visiting Istanbul, with average daytime temperatures around 20–23°C and cooler evenings at 13–15°C. The weather is generally mild and sunny, with occasional light rain, making it ideal for city tours, cultural exploration, and Bosphorus cruises. Be sure to visit the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, explore the Asian side of the city by boat, and shop til you drop at the Grand Bazaar and local boutiques.

Venice is a city like no other, and a place everyone should visit at least once. 8. Boston, USA
For travellers looking for autumn colours, Halloween events and cosy city cafés, Boston is easily one of the best places to visit in October. Explore historic areas like Beacon Hill and walk part of the Freedom Trail, or visit Harvard University.
The spooky town of Salem, where the movie of Hocus Pocus was filmed, is easily reached from Boston by taxi, train, or boat. The train takes around 30 minutes, while the ferry offers a scenic 60 minute journey. In October, Salem feels especially atmospheric, with cooler temperatures, autumn colours, and Halloween decorations everywhere.
Sarah was lucky enough to visit during the annual Salem Haunted Happenings festival and loved the towns atmosphere. Visitors can explore the Salem Witch Museum, the Peabody Essex Museum, and learn more about the infamous Salem witch trials. Even without stepping inside the museums, simply wandering through the streets is part of the appeal, with a festive atmosphere that keeps the spirit of Halloween alive throughout the year.

10. Australia – East Coast (Brisbane – Cairns)

Planning a trip along Australia’s east coast can be tricky due to the changing weather conditions throughout the region. In October, it sits in spring, with warm and generally dry conditions south of the Tropic of Capricorn and increasingly hot, humid tropical weather further north as the wet season begins to build. The Tropic of Capricorn is an imaginary line of latitude about 23.5 degrees south of the Equator, marking the southern boundary of the tropics.
October is one of the best months to visit the east coast of Australia, with warm temperatures, low rainfall, and excellent sailing conditions. Clear skies and gentle winds make it ideal for boat trips, snorkelling, and places like Whitehaven Beach.
In Cairns, the dry season runs through to October, bringing sunny days and lower humidity, perfect for Great Barrier Reef trips and rainforest visits in the Daintree Rainforest. Further south, Brisbane enjoys pleasant spring weather in October, with temperatures around 15 to 26°C, making it great for outdoor adventures and exploring the city before summer heat arrives.
