As 2018 draws to a close it’s time to start thinking about next year’s holidays. I have compiled a list of the top holiday destinations for 2019 to help you on your way!
This list has a little bit of everything in my eyes. Whether it’s warm or cool climates, stunning landscapes or urban excitement, there are plenty of potential options to sink your teeth into.
- 1. Sri Lanka
- 2. Canada
- 3. Montenegro
- 4. Dubai
- 5. Croatia
- 6. Netherlands
- 7. Hong Kong
- 8. Italy
- 9. Argentina
- 10. Scotland
1. Sri Lanka
This truly breathtaking country has been recently named as Lonely Planet’s Place to Visit for 2019. Located in the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka fits all the criteria of a tropical paradise. With white sandy beaches to beat the band, it also possesses eight UNESCO World Heritage sites. It’s also world renowned for the number of elephants you will see roaming around the place. If your interest hasn’t already piqued, be sure to check Sarah’s guide to Sri Lanka for great first-person insight into this wonderful country.

Canada might be an extremely vast country to consider as a destination, but it is hard to say that any one part is better than the other. The variety of experiences just waiting to be enjoyed is nothing short of remarkable. Toronto and Vancouver have become increasingly popular for Irish people to live in the last couple of years. If you take a week to sample the world famous Canadian hospitality, it will come as no surprise as to why. A road trip through the Rocky Mountains and the stunning National Parks are on most bucket lists and a trip to Niagara Falls is a must if visiting Toronto. With new routes to Calgary and Montreal in 2019, it is possible to reach most major Canadian cities directly from Dublin too, which makes it all the more appealing.
Montenegro is the perfect solution for those of you who might be looking for an alternative sun holiday destination for 2019. The Bay of Kotor is one of the most beautiful tourist spots in all of Europe and the prices are extremely reasonable too. If you’re wondering how to get there, I would recommend flying directly to Dubrovnik (there are flights with Ryanair and Aer Lingus from Dublin airport) and renting a car to drive along the Mediterranean coastline, so you can enjoy the best that this region has to offer at your own pace.
Dubai is a place where you really feel as if the locals are rolling out the red carpet for your visit. There is luxury to be found everywhere you look and it is becoming increasingly popular for Irish holiday goers. Home to the world famous, 7-star Burj Al Arab Hotel, Dubai boasts many more top drawer sites including the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa. If you are planning on travelling with children the IMG Worlds of Adventure theme park is well worth a visit too. If you’re liking what you’re hearing and are looking for some more Dubai tips, you can find them here.
Croatia has featured prominently on lists like this for a few years now but the thing is; when your charm is based on your timeless qualities, there is never a bad time to recommend it. Dubrovnik as we know is truly a beautiful place but there are also plenty of other dream destinations worth exploring too, such as Zadar, Zagreb, Pula and Split, which are now reachable on direct flights from Dublin airport.
This offering is something a little closer to home, with direct flight options from Dublin and Cork. People’s choices down south are often limited by the lack of routes departing from Cork. Instead of thinking about the Netherlands as simply a trip to Amsterdam and no more, why not branch out? One of my favourite trips that I have ever taken was staying for a few nights in the charming city of Haarlem. Haarlem is just a tiny bit north of Amsterdam and is also extremely close to Zandevoort beach. The Netherlands can enjoy temperatures in the late twenties and early thirties in the peak summer months and is also a fantastic place for family camping holidays too.
7. Hong Kong
It might surprise you to learn that Hong Kong is a lot more than just a bustling urban metropolis. There are also some really beautiful beaches such as Tai Long Wan where you can find some peace from the madness of the city centre. If you’re like me though, you’ll like a bit of that madness from time to time. Hong Kong offers you the perfect balance for an unforgettable holiday and now with direct flights from Dublin airport, it is more accessible than ever.
Argentina has been on my bucket list for quite some time and I think 2019 is going to be the year where a dream becomes reality. Why Argentina you ask? The simple answer is that is a nature lover’s paradise. There are plenty of chances to explore some wild terrains and even get a few snaps with a glacier up close. And lets not forget about Buenos Aires, which must be one of the world’s most beautiful cities. Also, they say “it takes two to tango”, and with tango being the national dance of Argentina, it seems only appropriate that you would make this trip with your loved one.
Again, you might say there is nothing new here. There is however, a lot more yet to be discovered by Irish holidaymakers. Go off the beaten track in Emilia-Romagna or take a road trip around Puglia. Matera provides you with a charming and authentic Italian experience. This rustic gem will be the European Capital of Culture for 2019 so it will be the perfect time to make the trip. Just to warn you in advance, once you try real Italian food, you will never want to come home!
Scotland is another destination brimming with beautiful landscapes. The Isle of Skye and the Scottish Highlands possess a natural beauty that is nothing short of awe-inspiring. If you have ever tried to envision a happy place during yoga or meditation, the human mind could not compete with the beauty of the Scottish Highlands. When you add Edinburgh and Glasgow into the mix, Scotland immediately joins the top drawer of holiday destinations.
Don’t let 2019 follow the same pattern of years previous. Instead of having another a year of “nearly” and “almost”, why not live life on the front foot and enjoy one of these top holiday destinations. The world is a beautiful place so take a breath, step outside and go explore. 🙂
