Short breaks, road trips and city and beach combos, I’ve got ten great American holidays from Ireland to inspire your next trip Stateside.
Whether you want a city break in New York or Washington, road trips through California or the Deep South, an escorted tour of the Canyonlands, or a family holiday in Florida, there is such a variety of American holidays from Ireland.
Aer Lingus will operate 14 direct routes between Ireland and North America this year, while United Airlines will operate three, and we also have services from Delta Airlines and American Airlines. This is great news from Irish holidaymakers, as it gives us a great choice of American holiday destinations to choose from.

1. New York: 4 Night Break, 12th November, €854pp
New York is always a good idea and with Aer Lingus offering return flights from €399 in November, the perfect time to start some early Christmas shopping!
Did you know there are now five Observation Decks in New York – a host of new attractions have opened up over the past few years, so even if you have been here before, I guarantee you there is lots more to see!
There are many different hotels to choose from, but it is hard to beat the 4-Star Club Quarters Hotel Times Square. Located in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, this hotel is rated as Excellent on TripAdvisor and was a Travellers Choice award winner last year.
Price for a four-night stay, with free cancellation, is €959 per room, making the total cost including flights just €879 based on 2 sharing. There are many more hotel options in this post:

Want to bring the kids along? Most schools have a short mid term break following the June bank holiday weekend, so it is an ideal time to travel to New York with kids. We enjoyed a fabulous family trip there a few years ago.
I always recommend staying in an apartment or a hotel with self catering facilities, for family stays in New York. It can take a couple of days for children to adjust to the time difference, and having a kitchenette can be a Godsend in the mornings, and evenings – you may fancy a night in after a long day sightseeing.
2. Ten-Night Deep South Road Trip, inc hotels and car hire, from €1827pp
This amazing multi-centre holiday takes in three of America’s most iconic cities, Nashville, Memphis and New Orleans, each known for their own particular style of music and cuisine.
Get lost in Rock ‘n’ Roll in Graceland, go walking in Memphis, experience Jazz in the French Quarter of New Orleans, and visit the Mecca for country music fans – Nashville. I found this super trip with American Holidays, and they include flights, car-hire ( one way drop off fee of approx. $190 payable locally) and checked baggage in the cost.
Price of €1827 includes flights, car-hire, baggage and three-night stays in Nashville, Memphis and New Orleans and a one-night stay in Natchez. This is based on travel in October but contact American Holidays for other dates and durations.
3. Washington: 4-Star September break from €734pp
Washington’s monument trail is like an open-air museum. You would want to be made of stone if the Lincoln, Jefferson and Vietnam Veterans Memorials didn’t impress you. The silence at Arlington Cemetery is one of those experiences you never forget, and of course there’s always The White House…
Washington is also home to the Smithsonian Institution, which is the world’s largest museum, and arguably the most interesting. You will find the National Air & Space Museum here too, and what I love about Washington is all of these are free. It is rare to find a city break where you don’t feel obliged to fork out for entrance tickets to top attractions.
A short break to Washington should be one of the most popular American holidays from Ireland, let’s try and make it so! I found a great deal on flights with United for €374 in September, and a three-night stay in the Lyle Hotel – on of Washington’s top rated hotels, is just €360 per person.
If you want to extend your stay, why not pop into nearby Virginia, where the weather and water should still be warm in September.

4. Luxury Alaska Cruise with Seattle Stay, inc flights and meals, €1598
Alaska, a place most of us only ever dreamed of visiting, has suddenly become more affordable. Witness some of the world’s most dramatic scenery as well as some stunning wildlife as you cruise to Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan and Victoria before cruising back to Seattle for your direct flight home.
This eight-night holiday includes flights with Aer Lingus, checked baggage, a pre-cruise stay in Seattle, followed by a seven-night cruise on Norwegian Bliss, departing the 14th of October. Add on a premium drinks package, WiFi, shore excursion credit and gratuities for only €149 extra!
If you want to extend your stay, or change dates, talk to the cruise specialists in Sunway and they will tailor make a trip to suit you.

5. Canyonlands Road Trip – Grand Canyon, Monument Valley & the Mighty Five of Utah, €1699
This road trip has been on my own bucket list for some time. As extraordinary as the Grand Canyon is, I can’t wait to the incredible rock formations in Utah’s famous National Parks – visiting the Canyonlands must be one of the most captivating American holidays from Ireland.
I found his 10-night deal with American Sky, but they can tailor make the trip to suit you, so if you want to stay longer or combine this trip with a few nights in Las Vegas, that can be arranged.
The trip starts in Las Vegas, where you will enjoy a two night stay, before picking up your car and visiting Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Zion National Park, Arches National Park and Bryce Canyon. Price includes flights, 10 nights hotel accommodation and car hire.
6. Miami and Royal Caribbean Cruise, €1599pp
Combine a two-night stay in Miami with a seven-night cruise on Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas for just €1599 in November. This super deal includes direct flights with Aer Lingus to Miami, 23kg checked baggage and four-star hotel accommodation in Miami.
Spend a day at Royal Caribbean’s private island Perfect Day at Cococay before cruising to Cozumel, Honduras and Puerto Costa Maya in Mexico and then return to Miami after seven days. Meals and entertainment is included in the cruise, and you can upgrade to a balcony cabin for an additional €200 per person.
7. Boston and Cape Cod – 10 Nights inc hotels and car hire, €1628pp
I love a good city and beach combo, and Boston and Cape Cod is up there with the best of them. I suggest waiting until you leave Boston to pick up your hire car, as a car is not needed in Boston. Boston is best explored on foot. Walk The Freedom Trail and marvel at Boston’s history before picking up a car and driving to the Cape.
Cape Cod has many top attractions, including the John F Kennedy Memorial and Museum, Plymouth Colony and Provincetown. Lighthouses are a big deal in Cape Cod too, and of course no trip would be complete without taking the ferry to Martha’s Vineyard and experiencing one of America’s best sunset locations.
Direct flights to Boston are available with Aer Lingus from €400 on numerous dates. I have chosen the 1st of September for this deal, but if those dates don’t suit, simply edit the dates on the links below to suit your requirements. Price includes a three-night stay in one of Boston’s most popular hotels – The Godfrey, followed by a seven-night stay at the hugely popular Beach Breeze Inn and seven days car hire.

8. Las Vegas and Cancun – 14 Day city and All Inclusive beach combo, €1835pp
Spend four days enjoying the thrills of Sin City before relaxing in a five-star hotel in Cancun on an all-inclusive basis – is this not the perfect holiday combination? I found this super deal from Cassidy Travel who include flights, baggage and hotel accommodation in the total cost.
This deal includes a four-night room-only stay at the Excalibur Hotel in Las Vegas, followed by a ten-night stay at the five-star GR Solaris Cancun, with all meals and drinks included. This beachfront hotel is rated as Excellent on TripAdvisor and was a Travellers Choice award winner last year.
Price for this two-week holiday including all flights and checked baggage is €1835 per person, departing on 6th September.
9. California Coast Road Trip – 14 Days incl hotels and car hire, from €2354pp
Driving the California Coast is one of the world’s most iconic road trips, and it is important you take your time to explore it properly. Many try to combine Yosemite, Napa Valley and even Arizona into this trip, but I highly recommend you don’t. Each city and region deserves time to appreciate it, and you will want to spend some time relaxing on the beach at the end.
I searched various travel agency websites and I couldn’t find an itinerary that I liked. I felt there were lots of one-night stops, which I believe are not practical, and they don’t allow you to explore the destination properly. I have a suggested itinerary below, based on our trip a few years ago.
I highly recommend using direct flights to maximise your time, and Aer Lingus have great value airfares flying into San Francisco and home from Los Angeles – return airfares are available from €550 in September.
Car hire is available from approx $100 per day including the one way drop off fee, but you won’t need to hire the car until you leave San Francisco. The following itinerary is just a guideline, dates, hotel choices and durations can be changed by editing the search options via the links below.
All hotels are highly rated on TripAdvisor and receive good reviews from previous guests, I have priced rates with free cancellation in the following hotels:
- 4 Nights San Francisco – Cartwright Hotel, Union Square BW Premier Collection
- 2 Nights Monterey – Wave Street Inn
- 2 Nights San Luis Obispo – Apple Farm Inn
- 2 Nights Los Angeles – Magic Castle Hotel
- 3 Nights San Diego – Bahia Resort Hotel, Mission Bay

10. Escorted Tours of America from Ireland
For those looking to visit multiple cities or attractions, without the hassle of driving, an escorted tour is a great option. There are many different tours to choose from, including the Enchanting Canyonlands, New England in the Fall, the Deep South, as well as American’s iconic East coast capitals.
There is also a choice of escorted tour companies to choose from, all of which can organise American holidays from Ireland: Trafalgar Tours, Travel Department and luxury escorted tour specialists Insight Vacations.
