With so many new routes announced this year there has never been a better time to fly from Cork Airport! Check out my top destinations for sun holidays from Cork in 2019.
There are some great summer holiday destinations that you can reach with direct flights from Cork in summer of 2019. The below list is in no particular order and each selection has its own unique charm. 🙂
Nice – French Riviera
The city of Nice is truly beautiful. I love when you combine the best of a city break with the best of a sunny getaway, as you can shape your holiday to suit whatever mood you’re in. The Promenade des Anglais acts as the perfect setting for a late evening stroll where you can sample delicious local cuisine at the waterfront. The wider region is not short of brilliant holiday options either, with Antibes and Cannes just a short spin away with a car.
Milan Bergamo – Lake Garda
Lake Garda is the perfect destination for those looking to relax and soak up some Italian culture. Aside from enjoying the stunning, mountainous lakeside setting, there is also a lot to do in the wider area. Gardaland and Canevaworld are two brilliant themed parks for families. Getting a cable car to the top of Monte Baldo will also give you the chance to enjoy one of the finest views in mainland Europe. Beaches are located all around the lake with Sirmione arguable being the nicest of these. Lake Como is another possible holiday destination for you if you take a direct flight from Cork to Bergamo!
Naples – Amalfi Coast
A direct flight from Cork to Naples will unlock one of the most beautiful regions in the world. Sorrento and Positano are nothing short of breathtaking in their own right. The views of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Amalfi Coastline are picture-perfect! If you’re looking for a romantic retreat to spoil your loved one, or even yourself, look no further than the beautiful Amalfi Coast. A premier attraction to experience just what I am talking about, would be taking a private boat tour of the Grotta dello Smeraldo. 🙂
Malta’s reputation as a premier sun holiday destination is growing each year and it’s capital Valetta was the European Capital of Culture in 2018. This year seems like the perfect time to introduce direct flights to Malta from Cork airport! Malta is rich in culture with the Megalithic Tombs of Malta and St. John’s Co-Cathedral being must-visits for any history buffs out there. Comino possesses a world renowned lagoon for you to enjoy and there are so many different places to enjoy water sports like scuba diving, canoeing and wind surfing.
Faro – The Algarve
Visit Portugal really do a fantastic job in marketing in this region. Once you see a video scaling the stunning cliffs of the Algarve, it’s hard to not want to book the next flight. Alvor and Albufeira have long been popular for Irish tourists and there is a lot to be said for the regions fantastic food culture. On top of that, you have numerous chances to golf, surf, shop and top up that tan. It’s hard to deny that the Algarve offers you a really well rounded holiday.
Barcelona – Spain
I was lucky enough to enjoy Barcelona for the first time last summer. It is a city everyone must experience at least once in their lifetime. Las Ramblas is a pretty touristy spot but it is still fun to stroll down and enjoy the various stalls. The Sagrada Familia and Bunkers del Carmel should be right at the top of your “to-do” list. The bunkers were used during the Spanish Civil War for anti-aircraft guns but have transformed into one of the best spots to enjoy a stunning view of Barcelona. It’s the perfect place for a sunset! As well as the beautiful beaches, there is so much more about this city to be loved. I would recommend taking an open-top bus tour around the city to take in the best of what it has to offer.
Gran Canaria – Canary Islands
Gran Canaria simultaneously offers holidaymakers the chance to either enjoy a calm and relaxing holiday or one filled with vibrant nightlife. Puerto de Mógan, San Agustin and Maspalomas are two areas which are known to be a little more peaceful than the hustle and bustle of the Playa del Ingles or Puerto Rico. Whatever type of holiday you might be into, Gran Canaria has the answer. It is geographically stunning and it’s volcanic landscapes are well worth exploring. I thoroughly recommend renting out a jeep and covering as much of the island as is humanly possible.
Malaga – Costa del Sol
Booking direct flights from Cork to Malaga will open up endless possibilities along the stunning Costa del Sol. Benalmadena, Torremolinos, Fuengirola, Marbella and even the city of Malaga itself are excellent options for memorable holiday in the sun. Renowned for it’s lively night life, the region actually offers so much more. As the Costa del Sol is a part of Andalusia, it means that if you’re a lover of seafood, a holiday here will be like heaven on earth. Andalusia and seafood go hand in hand and it is ingrained into their culture over many generations. Sierre de las Nieves is also a great places to enjoy some hiking and naturally beautiful surroundings. Booking a holiday here will leave you truly spoilt for choice.
Palma de Mallorca – Balearic Islands
Majorca is similar to Gran Canaria in the sense that you can literally find whatever type of sun holiday you wish to have on this island. It offers so much diversity in its destinations that it you can once again sample the best of both worlds. Santa Ponsa and Palma Nova are fantastic resorts for a lively holiday, but if you’re looking for something a bit more authentic then something like Puerto Pollensa, Cala D’or or Illetas might be a bit more suited. Hidropark is a lot of fun for a family trip but also something like the excavated Roman ruins of the Ciudad romana de Pollentia can be a great experience. No matter where you go though, the beaches of Majorca are really something special in the summer time. Find out in this post how to choose the right resort in Majorca for you.
Tenerife – Canary Islands
Next up is the terrific island of Tenerife. There are just as many chances to chill out and relax on a pristine beach as there are to let loose and enjoy some brilliant nights out. Siam Park and Loro Parque should be added to the list if you’re travelling with children. Once again there are an abundance of naturally beautiful spots to be explored all across this volcanic island. Mount Teide will supply a fantastic panoramic view and Costa Adeje is one of the more popular beaches on the island for visitors.
Dubrovnik – Croatia
Last but not least is the terrific Croatian city of Dubrovnik. If you have been watching Game of Thrones, a lot of Dubrovnik may already be familiar to you. The city has a medieval and exotic feel to it and is the perfect spot to mix sunshine and culture. The regions rapid growth in popularity has also seen nearby destinations like Cavtat becoming a destination of choice for tourists. If you’re willing to rent a car, there is no shortage of beauty in neighbouring Montenegro. The Bay of Kotor is less than two hours away in a car. It’d be rude not to go and explore 🙂 Read Sarah’s review of Dubrovnik here.
Hopefully you will be jetting off this Summer to one of these sun holidays from Cork airport. If you do let me know how you get on!
