Contemporary styling in a 300 year old palace, in the heart of Porto. Read my review of the NH Collection Porto Batalha.
From the moment we arrived at the NH Collection Porto Batalha Hotel, I knew we were going to enjoy our stay. While checking-in all guests were treated to complimentary drinks and sweets, and the ladies, including my 7 year old daughter, were given a beautiful red flower. NH Collection Hotels pride themselves on surpassing your expectations, and my first impression was, they did just that. Their hotels are located in outstanding buildings where the uniqueness of the property is preserved. We saw evidence of this straight away when we walked into the lobby.
The NH Collection Porto Batalha was once an 18th century palace, to think it was once a private home ❤️. In keeping with NH Collection Hotels ethos, the designers managed to recreate much of it’s splendour with stone columns and tasteful decor, in a contemporary style. The red painted exterior is a perfect example of this and the hotel must now be considered one of Porto’s landmarks.
Our rooms were modern and spacious and tastefully decorated in calming shades. We had a large balcony that wrapped around the room which I stepped on to each day to catch the sunrise. The Nespresso machine was a hit with my husband who enjoyed fresh coffee on the balcony each morning. Not all rooms have balconies so you will need to request the 4th floor rooms if you want to have this view of the city.
Bathrooms were spacious with a massive walk in shower and a double sink. I was surprised by the abundance of toiletries that were supplied too. NH Collection Hotels surpassed my expectations again with an array of bottles and tubs including a loofah, a large hand cream and even a nice hair treatment. The kids appreciated the chocolates left at night-time while I enjoyed the bath robes and slippers.
The location of the NH Collection Porto Batalha Hotel is excellent, in the heart of the city. Located only minutes from the main shopping street. Rua Santa Caterina, and ten minutes walk to the Dom Luis bridge, where the iconic picture of Porto’s cityscape can be taken.
There are some excellent restaurants close by so there is no need for taxis. On two occasions I tried to make a dinner reservation in recommended restaurants, only to be laughed at over the phone. Take note – make sure you book in advance! Luckily both times, the reception staff were able to recommend and secure bookings for us in superb restaurants. There is also an old tram stop outside the door which is worth a jaunt for the experience alone. Read my blog on why you need to choose Porto for your next city break.
After a day of sightseeing in Porto, the small indoor swimming pool is a welcome treat. The hotel actually has its own wellness centre, with a hydrotherapy pool, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi. Depending on how much time you have, there is also a fitness room and spa offering treatments and massage. We only managed time for the pool, which was the perfect way to re charge the batteries and allowed the kids some play time too.
Breakfast is excellent with a wide selection of cereals, cold meats, breads and tasty pastries. There is hot food available at the buffet, as well as waiter service offering teas, coffees and any style of eggs we wanted, including omelettes. There is also a small lobby bar which serves snacks and drinks throughout the day.
We loved our stay at the NH Collection Porto Batalha and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good four star hotel in the heart of Porto. It was my first time to stay at a NH Collection Hotel and I have no doubt it won’t be my last. Their ethos in preserving the uniqueness of each property along with excellent style and service is a winning combination.
