We spent a weekend in Porto a few years ago and loved it. Porto is a compact city with a medieval old town and colourful streets – it is a pleasure to explore. The Ribeira district is a Unesco World Heritage site and is full of local wine bars, restaurants and vibrant buildings close to the waterfront.
Enjoy a glass of wine or a meal by the river and soak up the atmosphere, for a fraction of what you would pay at home. In fact Porto of late has become one of Europe’s top food destinations.
You wont find many celebrity restaurants here, but lots of local eateries serving traditional Portuguese food, at rock bottom prices. Renowned as the birthplace of Port, there are also numerous port houses offering tastings and tours.
There are plenty of good places to go at night time too, with bands playing in various venues across the city.

I found a great deal staying in the 5-star Editory Boulevard Aliados Hotel. This modern luxury hotel is located in the heart of the city in a heritage building. It has received and Excellent rating on TripAdvisor and will no doubt increase in price over the summer months.
Flights are available from Dublin for €75 return on the 9th of October, or €78 return from Shannon on the 8th of October. Price for a three night hotel stay in the Editory Boulevard Aliados Hotel is €324 per person, making the total cost for a three night break €399.
