Who doesn’t love a festive Christmas market break? If you are looking for somewhere a little different this winter, why not discover the Romanian capital of Bucharest? I was lucky enough to enjoy a Bucharest city break for the Christmas markets last year, just as the city was beginning to come alive with festivities. Even though we arrived to heavy rain on the first day, I was instantly charmed by the beauty and warmth of the Old Town.

I have visited quite a few European Christmas markets over the years, and Bucharest is definitely one I would recommend. The city’s main Christmas market takes place in Constitution Square, with the impressive Palace of the Parliament creating a stunning backdrop. Expect rows of wooden chalets selling handmade crafts, festive decorations and traditional food and drink, alongside live music, entertainment and a huge sparkling Christmas tree.

The Bucharest Christmas Market dates aren’t confirmed just yet, but check updates here. Last year they kicked off on the last weekend of November.

While the Christmas markets will take up a lot of your weekend, you can also see a lot of the surrounding areas on a day trip to Brașov and explore Dracula’s castle, visit Sinaia to see Peleș Castle, or just stay local and discover the city’s cool, quirky cafés, bars and restaurants.

Bucharest is also one of the more affordable European capitals, making it perfect for a festive weekend break without the huge price tag.

I found flights for €124pp return from Dublin airport departing Friday 4th December and returning Monday 7th December, so 3 full days to explore the Romanian capital.

While in Bucharest, if you want to try a dinner with a difference head to the restaurant KONG for an amazing dinner show on every Friday and Saturday night with singers, dancing and acrobats. The food and drinks were super reasonable and it would be great for a special occasion or just an upbeat dinner experience in a stunning setting.

Top Tip: The show starts around 10pm so book a table for 8:30pm or 9pm and enjoy a few drinks before dinner and dancing late into the night.
