Thailand is one of the world’s most visited countries. Its diversity ensures that no matter what type holiday you seek – you can find it in Thailand. Culture vultures will love the gleaming temples, rice paddies and floating markets, couples will love the endless choice of beachfront hotels and vibrant nightlife, thrill seekers can swim with whale sharks, camp in rainforests and enjoy white water rafting, while families can combine beach time with a magical stay in an ethical elephant camp. Regardless of the type or traveller you are, or what experiences you seek, Thailand’s friendly people will ensure you receive a warm welcome. I have teamed up with Tropical Sky to help you choose where to stay in Thailand. From secluded island resorts to tented camps, I’ve got suggestions for couples, luxury, families, culture and wildlife.

The entrance to your own private tree house is by suspension bridge – can you imagine anything more romantic?

The TreeHouse Villas Koh Yao is surrounded by tropical rainforests, turquoise waters and dramatic limestone cliffs, as well as its own 400-metre secluded beach. You can hire bicycles and explore the island, enjoy water activities including sea kayaking and fishing, relax by your own private pool, or enjoy a wide selection of spa treatments, twice daily yoga classes or Thai cookery classes.

Staying in the TreeHouse Villas Koh Yao might seem hard to follow but five nights in a private villa in the 5-star boutique Pavilions Phuket Hotel might just do the trick! Enjoy swimming in privacy in your own private pool, and a choice of dining options from its three award-winning restaurants. Although situated on a quiet side of the island, you can also choose to explore Phuket and some of its vibrant nightlife. However, if rest and relaxation is all you seek, the spa and wellness centre on site will complete this memorable stay.

3 New Luxury Long Haul Destinations from Ireland for 2020

Treehouse-villas-compressor (1)

Looking for somewhere new to try in 2020? I’ve got secluded tree houses, paradise islands and all-inclusive resorts – check out these luxury long haul destinations from Ireland and get planning your next dream holiday!

I love my job, but writing this post is a health hazard. I have just found three luxury long haul destinations from Ireland to add to my ever-growing bucket list! I can’t decide whether I want to stay in a unique tree house in Thailand, go back to one of my favourite destinations – the Maldives, or enjoy Calypso music in the Caribbean. Can I have all three please?

luxury long haul destinations from ireland

I have teamed up with Tropical Sky to bring you some new luxury long haul destinations from Ireland that I believe you need to know about! Tropical Sky is a tour operator that I work with regularly. They offer a wide selection of luxury long haul holidays from Ireland, including these three beauties. Tropical Sky can tailor-make any holiday to suit your requirements. If you want to combine one of these hotels with another destination, or choose to stay shorter or longer in a particular hotel, just talk to the dedicated sales team and they will organise the perfect holiday for you.

5* TreeHouse Villas Thailand: 7 nights B&B from €1749 Including Flights

I am actually torn when telling people about this place – I believe it is one of Thailand’s best-kept secrets. Imagine entering your own private tree house by suspension bridge – this adult-only luxury retreat is like nothing else I have seen. The location alone will give you the wow factor, and this before you step inside the TreeHouse Villas Koh Yao. Koh Yao Noi is an idyllic island located in Phang Nga Bay between Phuket and Krabi in Thailand, and TreeHouse Villas Koh Yao is located right on the northern tip.

The TreeHouse Villas Kho Yao is surrounded by tropical rainforests, turquoise waters and dramatic limestone cliffs. Although it sounds almost like a retreat, you can also hire bicycles and explore the nearby villages and sandy beaches. Don’t let the name fool you either, TreeHouse Villas Kho Yao has its own 400-metre secluded beach and offers many water activities including sea kayaking and fishing. However if you just want to relax, you can enjoy a wide selection of spa treatments, twice daily yoga classes or a Thai cookery class.

luxury long haul destinations from ireland

There are 32 villas, each with their own private pool, jungle shower and hammock-shaped bath. If you prefer a single storey, you can opt for a beach villa, although personally I think there is something magical about walking across a suspension bridge to your bedroom.

You can enjoy meals in a choice of two restaurants or opt for romantic in-villa dining. The TreeHouse Villas Kho Yao must be one of the world’s most unique hotels.

5* Emerald Maldives Resort & Spa: 7 nights All-Inclusive from €3239 Including Flights

The Maldives is one of the most idyllic destinations I have ever visited and I would love to go back. No amount of superlatives do it justice, and anyone I have spoken to who has visited has had a similar reaction. When I heard of this brand new, 5-star deluxe all-inclusive resort – that is already a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, I was sold!

The Emerald Maldives Resort & Spa is built to blend perfectly with the environment. The result is a modern design with natural materials, including thatched roofs, surrounded by 1.5km of pristine white sand. There are 120 villas and you can choose whether you want to stay in a beach villa or have direct access to the Indian Ocean by staying in a water villa.

You will arrive by seaplane, which is included in the cost, as is unlimited dining and premium branded drinks throughout your stay. Their deluxe all-inclusive arrangement allows you to dine in any of their four restaurants and enjoy drinks from two bars, or on your own private balcony, as your minibar is refreshed daily with beers, wine and snacks. One boat excursion is included per seven-night stay, as well as group snorkelling excursions, non-motorised watersports and evening entertainment.

4* The Sands Barbados: 7 nights All-Inclusive from €1829 Including Flights

While this hotel may not be as luxurious as the previous two, I think it deserves a place on this list because of its superb location, and because it is brand new! I also love Barbados: it is so diverse, it is easy to explore and it epitomises the Caribbean dream.

Barbados, Sarah Slattery, The Travel Expert

Officially opening on the 1st December 2019, this all-inclusive hotel is located on a pristine sandy beach on Barbados’s lively South Coast. Its contemporary decor and spacious rooms make it an ideal choice for families or couples – the two- and three-bedroom suites are sure to please families looking for luxury long haul destinations.

Its beachfront location is ideal for the array of watersports available. Non-motorised watersports such as kayaking, snorkelling and body boarding are part of the all-inclusive arrangement, as are meals and drinks. There are two restaurants and two bars on-site as well as a gym and a spa.

3 Exclusive Yacht Cruises in the Caribbean, Bali & Seychelles, from €2499 Including Flights

yacht caribbean

Cruising around the Caribbean, island hopping in the Seychelles, and exploring the many islands of Indonesia – all three sound idyllic to me. These exclusive yacht cruises are combined with hotel stays for the ultimate holiday experience.

I am a big fan of cruise holidays, but the idea of sailing around the Caribbean on a luxury yacht has a different appeal to cruising on a 5000-passenger cruise ship! Wouldn’t it be great to be able to explore tiny islands in the Caribbean that cruise ships can not visit, to jump into the sea when you come across a hidden cove in the archipelago of Indonesia, or enjoy secluded bays on a catamaran cruise around the Seychelles? The phrase ‘it’s about the journey not the destination’ springs to mind. I have teamed up with Tropical Sky who offer yacht cruises from exclusive locations around the world. No matter which option you choose, you can expect an intimate yacht cruise with unforgettable memories.

7 Nights All Inclusive Grenada Stay And 7 Nights Grenadines by Yacht Cruise, from €2899 Including Flights

This sounds like a trip of a lifetime and one I would love to experience! You will start off this amazing holiday with a four-night stay in the Coyaba Beach Resort in Grenada, which just happens to be located on the world-famous Grand Anse Beach. This is constantly voted one of the top beaches in the Caribbean.

The Coyaba Beach Resort is also home to a freshwater pool with a swim-up bar, the perfect place to enjoy some cocktails and take advantage of the all-inclusive arrangement. There are plenty of water sports available and scuba diving is highly recommended here. If you prefer to stay on land, yoga, tennis and beach volleyball are available. The Coyaba Beach Resort hosts local musicians three times a week, so you can expect a relaxed but lively atmosphere.

yacht cruises in the caribbean

After a four-night stay, you will board a luxury yacht for a seven-night cruise around Caribbean islands that, until now, you may have only dreamed about. With just 14 people onboard, including a captain and steward, yacht cruises like this are hard to beat! Visit breath-taking locations such as Petit St Vincent, Tobago Cays and tiny Sandy Island – are you convinced yet? With meals and drinks included, your toughest decision will be whether to swim in the crystal-clear waters, or stay onboard and enjoy the stunning sea views. There will be plenty of snorkelling stops, including a day at the vibrant reef in Tobago Cays, where you should be able to swim alongside turtles.

yacht cruises in the grenadines

After this seven-night dream cruise, you will finish off your stay at Coyaba Beach Resort for the remaining three nights. Price of €2899 includes flights, a seven-night all-inclusive stay at Coyaba Beach Resort and a seven-night yacht cruise.

Regardless of which itinerary you choose, your holiday will start with a three-night stay at the 5-star Pavilions Hotel in Bali and culminate with an over-night stay.

Top Long Haul Holiday Destinations For Families

shutterstock_family-long-haul-compressor

Are you looking for a family holiday with a difference? Want a little adventure mixed with beach time? Check out my top long haul destinations for families and start planning your next big trip.

Family holidays, like most travel trends, have changed dramatically in recent years. The two-week package deal to Spain is no longer the typical family holiday. Many families are taking a ‘big trip’ every few years and milestone birthdays usually involve a trip to a bucket-list destination with your family. Everyone is looking for more authentic experiences and parents want to educate their children to different cultures too. We think nothing of flying ten hours to Orlando for a family holiday in Florida, so why not fly the same distance to Thailand or Mexico? My children (ages 8 & 11) would tell you that one of their favourite holidays was when we spent two weeks travelling around South Africa last year. So why not push the boundaries and go long haul for your next family holiday? These top long haul destinations for families should give you some food for thought.

long haul destinations for families

I have teamed up with Tropical Sky, who offer many long haul destinations for families. They can advise you on the best hotel options to suit your requirements. If you are looking for hotels with family rooms and kids clubs, they will source them for you. If on the other hand you are looking to stay in an elephant camp in Thailand, they can arrange that too. Here are their top long haul destinations for families.

Thailand

Thailand is a wonderful introduction to Asia for children. Most will be familiar with Thai curries or noodle dishes so there is no need to worry about local food. If you want to spend a few days in Bangkok, combine local culture with a family day out. Explore Asiatique, the family-friendly open air-mall with its ferris wheel and other fun things to do, and take ride on a tuk-tuk, Asia’s rickshaw.

long haul destinations for families

Stay at one of the many beach resorts, there will be plenty of activities to keep the children happy. Most family hotels will have entertainment laid on and the kids will enjoy snorkelling in the clear waters. Cha Am and Hua Hin are good choices if you don’t want to travel too far from Bangkok. However with Emirates, Etihad Airways, Qatar Airways and Cathay Pacific all flying from Dublin airport now, the islands of Phuket and Krabi and the Nothern city of Chang Mai are more easily accesible. If you really want to show the kids something unique, try an overnight stay in Elephant Hills Jungle Camp, suitable for children from 4 years.

Mexico

Mexico is a great destination for families, with Cancun and its surrounding resorts being the most popular choices. Hotels are packed with kids clubs, entertainment and many have water slides at the pool. You can swim, snorkel, take boat trips and enjoy sunny days on Mexico’s white sandy beaches. Most resorts are all-inclusive with unlimited soft drinks and ice creams included for children. Tropical Sky have some super offers where you can save up to €600 per person on selected all-inclusive resorts, such as the Dreams Sands Cancun & Spa. However, you fancy dining out, you are bound to find a Hard Rock Café or Planet Hollywood nearby. For family fun days out take the kids to Xenses or XCaret theme parks or one of the many waterparks.

Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is very popular with families, thanks to the wide selection of family-friendly, all-inclusive resorts and it’s year round sunshine. There are tons of watersports available including snorkelling, kiteboarding and sailing. Although surrounded by white sandy beaches, it’s interior is pretty special too. Take the kids on a jungle trek and see waterfalls, natural swimming pools and even some monkeys swinging from the trees.

Tropical Sky have super deals to family hotels in the Dominican Republic. The five-star Dreams Palm Beach Punta Cana is priced from €1149 on an all-inclusive basis, including flights and transfers. This includes a saving of €150 per person if booked by the 30th of April. There are kids clubs from ages 3-12 and a teens club from ages 13-17, with campout adventures, big screen movies at the beach and a host of watersports available.

Like the Caribbean? Check out my top 5 All Inclusive Caribbean resorts for families:

Dubai

Dubai is one of the best long haul destinations for families. With daily direct flights from Dublin, Dubai can be a great option to introduce your children to long haul travel. Dubai is a kids paradise, there is so much to do here. The world’s largest indoor theme park is in Dubai as well as Legoland. Sega Republic and some amazing waterparks. Make sure to visit Wild Wadi Waterpark, with 30 rides and attractions for all ages, it’s a great place to spend the afternoon. If you stay at Jumeirah Beach hotel you get free entry! You can also ski indoors, take a desert safari and go to the top of the world’s tallest building.  Another must-see is the Dubai Fountain, kids will be mesmerised by the incredible display as it lights up the night sky.

Why not combine Dubai with another destination like the Maldives. I have chosen to do that for our family holiday this year. After an action packed few days in Dubai, I can think of nothing better than flaking out on a beach in the Maldives. The Centara Grand Island Resort caters extremely well for children, with kids clubs, boat trips and even Playstations in some of the rooms.

Florida

Orlando needs no introduction and is widely accepted as the top family destination in the world. Thankfully direct flights with Aer Lingus to Orlando and Miami have made it much more accesible. With twelve theme parks, four waterparks and a host of other activities on International Drive, you will be spoilt for choice for things to do in Orlando. Take the kids to the Magic Kingdom, enjoy the parades, the fireworks and let them meet their favourite characters. Visit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, or the new Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge that is opening later this year.

Tropical Sky are offering up to four nights FREE at selected Disney hotels if you book by the 1st of April and a FREE I-Ride Trolley pass for 5-days, if you stay seven nights or more on International Drive.

See Disney hotel offers here See all Florida holiday offers here

South Africa

South Africa was one of our favourite family holidays. There is very little time difference so you will be surprised at how easy the flight is. Cape Town is such a vibrant city with so much to see and do. We loved taking the cable car to the top of Table Mountain and driving the Cape Peninsula to the Cape of Good Hope. Stopping at Boulders Beach was one of the highlights, where we were able to swim with penguins in the sea! We then took a car and drove along the Garden Route, stopping in some great beach resorts, before finishing off our trip at a Game Reserve. Seeing lions walk towards you and sleeping out in the African bush are memories that will last a lifetime. I would highly recommend a family holiday to South Africa and Tropical Sky will tailor make the right itinerary to suit your requirements.

Top 5 Adventure Holidays In Asia – With Flights & Luxury Hotels Included

thai-tourists-web

Cambodia and Vietnam, Malaysia and Borneo or a multi-centre in Thailand, there are so many choices for adventure holidays in Asia, check out my top five.

When we talk about going to Europe, we don’t compare Bulgaria with Spain, or Norway with Albania, so why do we do it when we talk about a holiday to Asia? We need to remember that each country has something unique to offer. Planning a trip to Asia can be tricky. Weather can not only vary from country to country, but in some cases you may find the rainy season in the north of the country and hot dry weather in the south – at exactly the same time! It can be a good idea to combine cities or jungle treks with beach resorts, or to combine two or three different countries in the one trip.

I have teamed up with Tropical Sky, the long haul holiday specialists to bring you my top five adventure holidays in Asia. These are just a sample of the holidays Tropical Sky offer in the region. All of the prices below include flights, transfers and top quality hotels – in most cases five star resorts! If you want to alter these itineraries in any way, just talk to their dedicated sales team and they will tailor make a holiday to suit you.

Thailand: Elephant Hills Experience with Phuket & Khao Lak Beach Stay, 12 Nights, from €3379

Sleeping in a tent in Thailand’s tropical rainforest is enough to make me want to try this trip! Throw in jungle trekking, canoeing and taking care of elephants and you have one of best adventure holidays in Asia.

Before embarking on the Elephant Hills experience you will first spend five nights in the luxurious Vijitt Resort in Phuket. This exclusive all-villa resort is the ultimate in five star luxury. Located on the Andaman Sea, this retreat is an ideal way to start your holiday in relaxing surroundings. You will then be taken by mini-bus to Elephant Hills in Khao Sok National Park, which will be your home for the next two nights. There is no need to worry, the tents have a double bed with bathrooms! Learn all about the conservation of the elephants and help feed them, as well as enjoying a canoe safari, jungle trek and longtail boat cruise.

Your final destination is the beach resort of Khao Lak. You will be staying at the contemporary Bangsak Merlin hotel where you can chill out and enjoy the on-site facilities, or take the short shuttle ride to the centre of Khao Lak and enjoy some local food, shopping and entertainment.

Price from €3379 includes flights, transfers, hotels on a bed & breakfast basis in Phuket and Khao Lak and full board at Elephant hills.

Vietnam & Cambodia: Hanoi, Halong Bay, Hoi An & Angkor Wat, 12 Nights from €2,449

A two centre holiday in Vietnam and Cambodia is a very popular choice for an adventure holiday in Asia. The short two hour flight from Dha Nang directly to the town of Siem Reap in Cambodia makes it an ideal combination. This twelve night itinerary combines the best of Vietnam with a three night stay to see the world’s largest religious monument at Angkor Wat.

Your holiday starts with a three night stay in Vietnam’s capital, Hanoi. After a busy few days you will transfer by private car to Halong Bay, where you will board a luxury junk boat for an overnight cruise. There is no better way to explore this captivating UNESCO World Heritage site, than by boat. See how the Vietnamese trade in the early morning and enjoy cocktails and seaviews.

You will then drive back to Hanoi to catch a short flight to Da Nang where you will transfer to the riverside town of Hoi An for four nights. Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hoi An is a pretty riverside town with pedestrianised streets and ancient buildings. Next stop is Siem Reap in Cambodia where you will spend three nights in the luxury Heritage Suites Hotel. Located only fifteen minutes from Angkor, you will have plenty of time to discover the ancient monuments, try some local Khmer tapas (a must-have) and also enjoy the swimming pool in the afternoons.

Price from €2449 includes all flights, transfers and hotels on a bed & breakfast basis.

Borneo: Jungle & Beach, 10 Nights from €2,499

You only have to say the word Borneo and adventure springs to mind. Tropical rainforests, stunning beaches, amazing marine life and the chance to see Orangutans in their natural habitat – this ten night trip to Borneo is one of my favourite adventure holidays in Asia.

You will fly into Kota Kinabalu where you will enjoy a three-night stay at the Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa, before flying north to Sandakan. Your first stop is the Orangutan rehabilitation centre at Sepilok, where Orangutans roam free and you can observe from jungle boardwalks. You will also be able to visit the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, where rescued sun bears live. After an action packed morning enjoy a river cruise and lunch at the Abai Jungle Lodge, where you will stay for two nights. Search for wildlife on river cruises and enjoy tropical sunsets and jungle sounds, from the comfort of your luxury lodge.

adventure holidays in asia

Your final stop is the stunning island of Gaya, where you will stay for five nights. Located inside the Tunki Rahman Marine Park, the Gaya Island Resort is not only a tropical island paradise but is also an eco-friendly luxury resort. You will be staying in your own private villa on stilts overlooking Mount Kinabalu or mangrove forests and you can expect fine dining, Balinese spa treatments and excellent snorkelling opportunities.

After a throughly relaxing seven days you will transfer back to Kuala Lumpur for a three night stay in the Hotel Majestic. Still searching for a last minute holiday deals? Check out my top tips for finding the best value holiday deals that I discussed with Ivan Yates on Newstalk FM.

As the peak holiday season approaches there is still time to secure a last minute holiday deal. Good news for holidaymakers is that capacity has increased greatly. Dublin airport has a staggering 14 new routes this Summer with 1.7 million extra seats added across it’s network. Everyone is talking about the new routes to China, Hong Kong and to the US but one million of those extra seats are to Europe. New destinations like Cyprus, Morocco and Turkey could prove to be great value for last minute sun holiday bookings. However don’t forget about package holiday deals….

Tour Operators like TUI and Sunway have paid in advance for flights and hotels so if they have availability left, they will have to sell them off cheaply. They also sell flight only so if you don’t want to book their accommodation, you still may get a good deal on return flights. Sometimes they include checked baggage too. A good travel agent will be able to tell you instantly what is available with Tour Operators, so make a quick phone call before trying to book everything independently.

Long haul holiday deals

There is also great value in long haul travel and many travel agents and tour operators have been given preferential rates with long haul carriers. You may find that it is cheaper to book a package deal than book a flight and hotel separately. Sunway have a special offer of three nights in Dubai departing the 6th of September for €525 per person sharing. This includes return flights to Dubai and three nights accommodation in the Arabian Park Hotel. It is only a 3* hotel but it gets great reviews on tripadvisor and they even offer free airport transfers and a free shuttle bus to the beach. To book a flight only to Dubai is €533 at the same time.
