My Top Travel Blog Posts of 2020

Sarah Keem Bay (1)

Travel inspiration for when we can travel again, staycations, and travel updates, were my most popular travel blog posts of 2020. In case you missed them, check them out below.

Despite the lack of overseas travel this year,  I am both proud and thrilled that The Travel Expert website received 1.25 million views this year! I am grateful to all of you who read, commented and shared my travel blog posts – they gave me the strength to keep going, regardless of years challenges.

In fact, there were times throughout the year when my website was actually busier than the same period in 2019 – something I found extremely surprising! As well as my posts on the latest travel restrictions, writing about Ireland proved extremely popular. However, you also liked reading inspirational posts for when we can travel again. In case you happened to miss them, I have outlined my most popular travel blog posts of 2020 below.

A post shared by Sarah Slattery – Travel Expert (@the_travel_expert)

2020 was certainly the year of the staycation. Social media channels were packed with images of sea swims and hikes along the Wild Atlantic Way, while SUP boards and wet suits were like hens teeth. We enjoyed two fabulous staycations in Mayo and Kilkenny this summer, and I hope to see lots more of Ireland next year.

I asked my readers what content they wanted to read during the pandemic and staycations came out on top. So I wrote over 40 posts featuring hotels, Airbnbs and destinations in Ireland, and these were my most popular travel blog posts of Ireland.

23 Luxurious Airbnbs near the beach

luxury airbnbs near the beach in Ireland - one of my most popular travel blog posts of 2020

Holiday homes or hotels with lodges on site, were the most sought after accommodation types this year. Add in a beach near by and you have the holy grail of staycations. This post on luxurious Airbnbs near the beach proved hugely popular, with 39,000 views. I have already seen a huge demand for similar type properties for 2021, so I have no doubt this will be one of my most popular travel blog posts next year too!

20 hotels with lodges in Ireland

hotels with lodges in ireland - waterford castle

Similarly to the above post, this one was hugely popular with families this summer. Having the freedom and space of a lodge, with the added benefits of hotel facilities on site, is a win-win. Another one to bookmark, because with 26,000 views to date, I have no doubt it will be equally as popular in 2021.

40 hotels in Ireland that allow dogs

hotels in ireland that allow dogs - one of my top travel blog posts of 2020

If 2020 was the year of the staycation, becoming a dog owner became a close second. With more people working from home, and overseas travel not possible, this was the year to adopt a four-legged friend. Of course you couldn’t leave your new pet at home, so pet-friendly hotels and Airbnbs were in big demand. Over 12,000 of you loved this post, as well as this one on dog-friendly Airbnbs in Ireland. Another one to bookmark or pin if you have a pet in the family.

My Irish bucket list – unique stays and luxury hotels in Ireland

best luxury hotels in Ireland and unique stays

This post surprised me the most as it was my own personal bucket list! I wrote it to remind myself of how many amazing places I had yet to visit in Ireland. It turns out you loved them too, as it was one of my most popular travel blog posts of 2020. From lighthouses to beach houses, lakeside lodges to penthouse suites – you name it, they are all here.

This county-by-county guide features Ireland’s best beaches and places to stay nearby. What I love about it is that most of the recommendations came from you, the readers. I asked for opinions on my social media channels and I received hundreds of replies. It was great to hear about so many hidden coves, and beaches only accessible by boat – I would never have known about them without your help. I have already added some of these to my own Irish bucket list.

I have listed a variety of places to stay nearby to suit all tastes and budgets, including hotels, Airbnbs, and even glamping sites!

With travel restrictions in place for most of 2020,  I spent a lot of time exploring my own county. There were walks in Dublin that I hadn’t done since I was a child, as well as new walks that I only discovered for the first time this year. We hiked the Dublin Mountains many times over the years but, I didn’t realise until recently how many beautiful cliff walks there are in Dublin.

I have filled this post with relatively easy walks in Dublin, that are suitable for most fitness levels. With county restrictions in place once again, perhaps now is the time for Dubliners to discover some of these.

If there is one theme throughout all my overseas posts this year it was luxury. It seems many of you want to make up for the lack of travel this year by booking a luxury holiday in 2021 – something I hope to be doing myself! These posts should give you plenty of inspiration.

25 luxury villas in Portugal

Portugal is one of our my favourite holiday destinations. It is blessed with hundreds of gorgeous sandy beaches, and some stunning villas overlooking them. I expect villa holidays to be extremely popular in 2021, with many loving the privacy and space that a villa offers.

I have compiled palatial homes, countryside retreats, beachfront Airbnbs and five-star resorts into this post, and I challenge you not to fall in love with every single one of them! Some of them are like celebrity homes and are outrageously expensive, but we have to dream, right?

20 Luxury Airbnbs in Europe to inspire your next vacation

luxury airbnbs in Europe

I loved researching this post, and would happily stay in any of these! I’ve got beach houses in the Med, luxury villas in Santorini, ski-in ski-out chalets, as well as countryside farmhouses in Italy and France, and lakeside retreats in Iceland and Norway. I was amazed at the variety that is on offer and it seems you were too, as it was one of my most popular travel blog posts of 2020.

With PCR tests required in many countries for children over 6, testing could cost €200 per person (both inbound and outbound), if you wish to travel overseas this summer. We may not travel as often, or travel to far flung destinations, but may choose a luxury hotel closer to home instead. I combined some of Europe’s best luxury family resorts into one post to whet your appetite.

Travel tips / updates

travelling during coronavirus - top travel blog posts

Many people had booked holidays and flights long before coronavirus arrived in Ireland. As well as last minute cancellations in March, it was soon clear that summer holidays abroad were not going to be possible. Some airlines cancelled flights, others did not, some provided refunds quickly, others did not.

There was no one size fits all approach and in many cases customers couldn’t get through to airlines to find out if they were allowed to change or cancel their booking.

I soon realised that with flight cancellations, travel restrictions and travel bans changing weekly, it was important to keep people updated on the latest travel updates. I published many travel tips posts this year including information on travel insurance, locator forms and cancellations and refunds, however these three were my most popular:

My step by step guide to the EU traffic light system for travel

eu traffic light system for travel - travel blog post

Green lists, red regions and travel bans, the constant mixed messages and changes to travel restrictions made planning an overseas trip almost impossible. When the green list was abandoned and the government implemented the new EU traffic light system for travel, we all breathed a sigh of relief – however, it was short-lived. What we actually got was even more confusing, as each EU country adopted their own policy in tandem with the traffic light system.

I decided to write this handy guide as I received many messages from people who found it confusing. Hopefully I have made the new system clear in this post, although it is important to point out that restrictions are changing daily, so always check with your travel agent or airline before travelling.

Weekend Break to Vienna, Flights & 4-Star Hotel, 27th January, 3 Nights, €215!

shutterstock_Vienna-compressor

This weekend break to Vienna is the perfect Christmas gift and a great opportunity to explore one of Europe’s most elegant cities.

Elegant, historical, noble, when you think of booking a weekend break to Vienna, you may think it will be expensive. Not anymore! With low priced airfares in October, a city break to one of Europe’s fashionable cities is much more affordable.

weekend break to vienna

The historical centre of Vienna is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with palaces, museums and churches all located very close together. It is very easy to navigate so you may wish to amble around admiring the stunning architecture, or do what most tourists do – get a horse and carriage.

The former Imperial summer residence, the Schonbrunn Palace, is a must visit, with stunning gardens, monuments and even a zoo – it is one of Vienna’s top attractions.

World class composers such as Mozart, Beethoven and Strauss all lived in Vienna so it is no surprise that one of the world’s leading opera houses is here.

However, Vienna’s music scene offers much more than opera. If you venture out of the historical centre you will find plenty of trendy pubs and clubs playing music until the small hours.

weekend break to vienna

For a more authentic food scene head to Naschmarkt (meaning snack market). This is where locals dine and if you venture a little further to the 19th district, you will find plenty of wine bars and even vineyards.

I found a great deal staying at the 4-star Hotel Schani Wien. Highly rated on TripAdvisor and awarded a certificate of excellence this year, this hotel is located just 300 metres from the main train station.

A blend of Viennese traditions and modern architecture, you can expect a modern hotel with spacious rooms and a charming courtyard.

15 Top Tips and Tricks for Visiting Theme Parks

roller-coaster-1592917_1280_opt

I have visited many theme parks, thankfully without enduring massive queues or spending a fortune. Check out my top tips for visiting theme parks and maybe you can too.

1. Book your tickets in advance

This may sound obvious but booking tickets in advance is one of the top tips for visiting theme parks! Tickets are ALWAYS dearer at the entrance to a theme park, and you won’t have to queue. Attraction Tickets.com have the LOWEST theme park ticket rates on the web, with free delivery and no credit card fees 😎

Attraction Tickets.com also offer many combination tickets that are not available to buy at the gate. You may get 2 days for the price of 1, or get discounted tickets to multiple theme parks, that are only available on their website.

2. Research, research research.

I can’t stress this enough. You WON’T be able to go on every ride, no matter how fit you are, or how small the theme park is. Check the height and or age restrictions before you go, so you can rule out rides that are not applicable for your children. Not only will this save you time, but by preparing your kids in advance you may avoid any upset, if they are too small to go on a top attraction.

top tips for visiting theme parks
Mark the attractions that are ‘must see’ and go for them first. Check the times of shows or parades and decide what you want to see. Rides are usually quieter during parades, so bear that in mind if the parade is repeated and take advantage.

3. Parking tips:

Before you decide to drive, check the price of the parking. In some cases it can be exorbitant. It may be quicker and cheaper to take a shuttle bus or UBER to the park. If you do decide to drive, take note of where you parked. You will probably arrive at the park early, when the car park may be somewhat empty. Leaving however is a different story, so if you don’t know you where you parked your car, you could be in for a long night…

4. Bring supplies.

tips for visiting theme parks

If there are water rides, bring swim suits, and if you don’t want to get wet bring a poncho. A waterproof casing for your phone is also a good idea, as is a powerbank for your phone. You will probably take hundreds of pictures so you will want to re-charge it.

Bring snacks, they will come in handy when you are waiting in line for a long time, and will be a lot cheaper than buying snacks in the park. Most parks also have free water dispensers so I suggest bringing your own water bottle.

A lightweight back pack is ideal as sunglasses and phones are not allowed on some of the fast rollercoasters. Most parks have lockers available, take advantage of this rather than carrying a bag around all day. If travelling during the summer time – don’t forget your sunscreen!

5. Arrange a meeting place if you get lost.

Hopefully this won’t happen, but having a meeting place pre-arranged will alleviate some of the stress if you manage to get separated from your friends of family. Remember there will be rides that only some of the family will go on, and on some occasions the rides finish in a completely different place to where they started from. Having a meeting place is essential.

6. Plan your route

tips for visiting theme parks

Don’t follow the herd. Most people tend to turn right when they go into a theme park. Why not go anti-clockwise, or go to the rear of the park and work your way towards the entrance. Another good option is to go straight for the rides that you really want to go on.

The most popular rides will have the longest queues, so go on them first when you have more energy and don’t mind queueing. Trust me, this is a much better than standing in line for an hour at 5pm with exhausted children.

7. Check out express passes / fast track

Express passes vary from park to park. Disneyland Paris for instance has a great ‘free’ fast pass system. You simply go to a ride and get a time slot for later that day, then come back to a shorter queue. Other theme parks are not so good, or indeed free.

Fast pass tickets in some parks can be a Godsend if you are travelling during peak season, and if you want to go on the most popular rollercoasters. If however, you happen to be travelling off peak and/or you have small children who are unable to go on the big rides, they may be a waste of money. Fast passes in many parks are not valid on the top attractions, make sure you check each park for their individual offering.

8. Use the single rider lanes

tips for visiting portaventura

There may be one or two people in your group who want to try the fast coasters. Make use of the single lanes where there is usually little or no queue. It may mean that you wont be able to sit next to your partner, but you may be seated in the row behind them, and if that means saving a half hour in the queue, it might be worth it!

9. Use the baby swap.

The baby swap facility is not available in all theme parks, but if you see it – take advantage. They are used primarily for people who are travelling with a small child. You all queue together, one person stays with the baby in a room at the top of the queue, while the other goes on the ride. When your partner is finished the ride, you simply swap places.

10. Go at night time

tips for visiting theme parks
Not only are queues way shorter at night-time, but many parks offer discounted tickets for evening visits. You may also catch a parade or fireworks display.

11. Bring ID

This is one of the top tips for visiting theme parks in America. You have to have picture identification if you want to buy alcohol, regardless of what age you are in America. A nice cold beer after an exhilarating (or terrifying) ride might be needed, so make sure you bring ID with you.

12. Consider staying in one of the theme park hotels for a few nights.

tips for visiting universal studios

Many theme parks including Universal Studios, Disney World and Disneyland Paris have hotels on site. These can be handy if you are planning on spending a lot of time in these particular parks. You will usually have early access to the park before the general public, so you can go on top attractions without large queues.

It can also be handy at night time for dining options, and for easy access to the park for firework displays, parades or shows. Some of Universal’s top hotels include express passes in your stay.

13. Check the shows are in English

We got caught out in Disneyland Paris when we queued for 45 minutes for the French version of Frozen! Many shows in theme parks are shown in different languages. Make sure the show you are planning your day around, is the English version. Sometimes there is a small icon on the park guide showing which language the show is in, failing that, check in with the information centre beforehand.

14. Pre-purchase Disney’s Fast Pass+ and Memory Maker.

tips for visiting theme parks - disneyworld

Disney’s Fast Pass+ allows you to pre-book your favourite rides and attractions online before you go. This is automatically included with Disney tickets purchased through Attraction Tickets.com. Similarly Disney’s ‘memory maker’ which normally costs $199 is free if you buy your Disney tickets through Attraction Tickets.com. This allows you to keep ALL photographs that are taken of you in the park.

15. Download the App

Many theme parks have their own free apps with tips for visiting theme parks, as well as wait times for rides, showtimes and availability in restaurants. Download the app before you go.

Remember to pre book your theme park tickets through Attraction Tickets.com , who have the LOWEST theme park ticket rates on the web, with free delivery and no credit card fees. If you prefer to book by phone or are confused about what tickets to buy, why not call the expert staff in Attraction Tickets Dublin office. They are open from 9am-9pm, 7 days a week, call free on 1800 936 640. All they sell is theme park tickets and hotels, so they know all the theme parks inside out.

I hope you enjoyed my top tips for visiting theme parks. If you have any to add, just comment in the box below I would love to hear them.  This post was sponsored by Attraction Tickets.com but all views, as always, are my own.

My Favourite Travel Highlights From 2018

Penang beach

What a year 2018 has been! I went on 14 trips and wrote 195 posts and have loved every minute of it! Here are some of my favourite travel posts from 2018. I hope they will give you some travel inspiration.

I have had so many travel highlights throughout my life but our road trip in South Africa earlier this year, is up there with the best of them. Seeing Luke’s face as we watched lions playing just meters from our jeep, is something I will never forget. Paragliding off Signal Hill in Cape Town was pretty memorable too! You can see all my travel posts from South Africa below.

I loved my trip to Malaysia and how I got there! Flying with Qatar Airways, in the best business class in the world, was an great experience. We visited Kuala Lumpur and the island of Penang which has so much more to offer than just stunning beaches. This trip really opened my eyes to the diversity of Malaysia, I would love to go back and visit Borneo and some of the other islands.

I also enjoyed two mini cruises this year! I was fortunate to be able to bring the kids with me on Royal Caribbean’s Independence of the Seas, as Luke was chosen to road test the newly revamped ship. I also had the pleasure of cruising on MSC’s brand new ship MSC Seaview, and boy was she stunning.

I was delighted to be able to show the kids New York, a place I use to visit regularly before they came along. A family wedding in Philadelphia meant we got the opportunity to see both Philadelphia and New York in July.

Our stay in the fabulous Aqua Suites in Lanzarote was the best way to round off a great summer. It was a super relaxing holiday with great food and nice quality family time. The kids are already asking me if they can go back next year.

Thanks to everyone who recommended @cafelaola – the views and atmosphere are 👌 Isn’t social media great for that – love when you ask for recommendations and you get lots of great places. I have so many now I don’t know how I’ll fit them in this week – will try my best though, all in the name of research 😉 About Cafe La Ola though, pizzas are not the best so don’t order them but everything else was good and tbh you don’t go for the food anyway. Lots more on my stories! . . . . . #familyholiday #familyfun #familytime #travellingwithkids #family #familypictures #familyfirst #kidsplay #lanzarote #puertodelcarmen @visit_lanzarote #summerholidays #summer #summerday #travelpics #familiesofinstagram #familypictures #familytravel #familytravelblogger #seaview #view #restaurant #sunset #sunset_pics #sunsetview

I visited Puglia in Italy for the first time over the October bank holiday weekend. We spend two nights in the stunning city of Matera and two nights in a fabulous Airbnb in Alberobello. Puglia is a place I will definitely be returning to – I still have to write my posts on our stay here, but Ill get to it asap – watch this space!

Working with Ireland’s Blue Book gave me the opportunity to visit some of Ireland’s Country House Hotels, Marlfield House and Dunbrody House Hotel. I enjoyed some great Irish hospitality and the most delicious food.  I am hoping to visit more of their properties in 2019.

It’s amazing what one night away can do! Less than an hour from Dublin yet miles away from normality! We had a fab 24 hours in @marlfieldhouse .We ate fabulous food, strolled around the grounds and just relaxed really – we even got to walk the beach in Curracloe 🙌 See more on my highlights. #collab . . . . . #marlfieldhouse #irelandsbluebook #countryhouse #wexford #ireland #discoverireland @visitwexford #irelandsancienteast #luxurylifestyle #luxuryhotel #irishtravelblogger #travelblogger #travelgram #ireland_gram @irelandsancienteast @tourismireland @irelandaily @instaireland #relaischateaux @relaischateaux #irishcountryhouse #autumn #conservatory @irelandsbluebook

A massive thanks to everyone for all the follows, likes, comments and shares, I really appreciate it. I know I wouldn’t be able make all these trips happen if it wasn’t for all of you reading my blogs and supporting me on my journey. With trips planned to Vietnam, Dubai, Maldives and hopefully a ski trip, 2019 is looking great already!  I hope my favourite travel posts from 2018 will help you plan your next adventure and that 2019 is full of lots of exciting trips for all of us!

Keep travelling!
