How to get Flights and Upgrades with Avios Points

plane and beach

Combining my two favourite pastimes, travel and shopping – to say I am excited is an understatement! I have teamed up with Avios to tell you how to get flights and upgrades with Avios points!

For years I have been hearing from friends and family in the US and the UK about how they have so many air-miles, yet they only take one holiday a year! I always wondered why Ireland was so behind the curve – well not anymore! Collecting Avios points is now something we can all do, even those who don’t travel often. Avios are a reward currency that are used by many airlines including Aer Lingus, British Airways and Iberia, as well as various hotel websites and high street stores.

When you collect Avios points you can use them to get flights and upgrades, with any of their partner airlines. Some of you may have already joined Aer Club, the Aer Lingus frequent flyer program, and may have collected Avios points already, but did you know you could collect them in other outlets too? It only costs 37,000 Avios to upgrade to business class to New York with Aer Lingus! For most of us flying business class to the USA was a pipe dream, but with Avios it is now attainable.

how to get flights and upgrades with avios points

Supervalu, Kildare Village and Appleby are just some of the Irish suppliers that have all joined the Avios reward programme. This means that every time you shop in Supervalu you can collect Avios points! Fancy a trip to Kildare Village? Now is your excuse to go, you can collect Avios points with every purchase! Have you a special occasion coming up? Make sure you pay a visit to Appleby Jewellers. It really is that simple. Supervalu will give you 1 Avios point for every €1 spent, Kildare Village will give you 5 Avios for every €4 spent and Appleby will give 5 Avios for every €1 spent!

Read my post on the ways to collect Avios for more partner details.

how to get flights and upgrades with avios points

It doesn’t end there…  AerClub have an eStore!

When I say this is going to change the way we shop, I really mean it! You can also get rewards for on-line purchases in hundreds of high street stores, hotel websites and even iTunes!  Right now Marks and Spencer are giving 4 Avios points for every €1 spent, Debenhams are giving 4 Avios per €1, ASOS 7 Avios and travel website Expedia are giving a whopping 10 Avios per €1. Once you are an AerClub member you can access the AerClub eStore with the same log in and password. Simply click on your favourite stores and shop online in the usual way. It won’t cost you any more to shop this way but your purchases will be tracked, and your Avios account will be topped up with points!

how to get flights and upgrades with avios points

So how many points do I need for a flight, I hear you say….

There are so many variations, depending on when and where you travel, but 8,000 Avios points will get you a return flight to Paris. For 17,000 Avios you can have a return flight to the Canary Islands and if you can save 26,000 you can have a return flight to New York. Note these are based on off peak travel and exclude taxes and charges. For full list of date bands click here.

This may sound a lot but I have accumulated 40,ooo points already in just one year! With the exception of three flights to Spain, all of my points were accumulated by shopping in Supervalu, Kildare Village and via the eStore. Avios regularly have promotions on to make it even easier to collect points. Suddenly a business class upgrade on my flight to New York is possible…

What I love about this competition is that you can enter as many times as you like. All you need to do is convert a minimum of 50 SuperValu Real Rewards points to Avios points to enter. Every time you convert 50 points, this counts as 1 entry. If, like me, you are a regular shopper in SuperValu, the chances are you have hundreds of Real Rewards just sitting in your account. Just make sure you convert them to Avios points before the 31st of October 2017, and convert 50 at a time to get as many entries as possible. If you haven’t already converted SuperValu points to Avios points, it literally takes minutes on the SuperValu website.

Why should I join?

As an AerClub member, Avios points are so easy to accumulate; you don’t have to be a frequent flyer to collect them. In fact you will collect much more by simply shopping. You can collect points in stores like SuperValu, Kildare Village and Appleby and in top highstreet stores online at the Avios eStore. You can collect a staggering 30,000 Avios points by subscribing to the Irish and Sunday Independent or 500 Avios points by making a restaurant reservation online by using Restaurant Circle. Of course you can also collect points every time you fly with Aer Lingus or their partner airlines such as British Airways, Iberia and United. I’ve been collecting points for 10 months now and I almost have a business class upgrade to New York. Almost all of these points were collected by shopping. Still not convinced? Read my no nonsense guide on how to get flights and upgrades with Avios points or check out this short video.

Still not joined SuperValu Real Rewards?

Just pick up a Real Rewards card in your local SuperValu and log onto the SuperValu website. Add your AerClub membership number and convert your Real Rewards points to Avios points in minutes. Just remember to convert 50 at a time to get as many entries as possible.

Good luck!

Collect Double Avios points on Back to School Shopping and Triple Avios Points With SuperValu!

In my latest post for Avios, I’ll tell you how to collect double Avios points on back to school shopping as well as triple points from SuperValu!

I am a SuperValu shopper, so I was delighted to learn that they are giving away triple Avios points if you convert your real rewards or money back vouchers before the end of August. Instead of the collecting the usual one Avios for every €1 spent with SuperValu you will now collect 3 Avios points! If you haven’t received your money back vouchers yet don’t worry you can convert them easily online or by using the SuperValu app and still collect your triple points. See here for more details.

Collect double Avios points on Back to School Shopping

With the summer almost over, it’s time to start thinking about your winter wardrobe and for families, some back to school supplies. Avios have you covered with some excellent collection offers when you shop online via their Avios eStore. For those who are not familiar with the Avios eStore, this is the quickest and easiest way to collect Avios points in one go, on the items you had already planned to buy! Read my post about how to get flights and upgrades with Avios points. Once you are logged into your Avios account, just shop online like you normally would and your purchases are tracked, so you collect Avios points from your favourite stores. Marks and Spencer is giving eight Avios for every €1 spent instead of the usual four, from the 21st of August until the 10th of September and Eason is giving ten Avios instead of the usual five from the 21st of August until the 21st of September.  You can collect Avios points from lots of other great stores too. Gap are giving nine Avios per €1 and Nike seven Avios per €1. So if your child is looking for new Nike runners before he or she goes back to school, maybe now you can justify the purchase! If you are planning any winter breaks, accommodation website Hotels.com is giving eight Avios per €1 instead of their usual six Avios, until the 20th of August.

Irish Independent and Sunday Independent readers will be delighted to hear that if you subscribe to their home delivery you will receive thirty thousand Avios and those subscribing to a years digital subscription will collect eighteen thousand Avios points. See here for more details. For those of you who are following my Avios journey, I now have 25,000 points, in just eight months! Watch out soon for a detailed account of how I obtained these Avios points and I will show you just how easy it is to collect with your day to day shopping!

How to join:

If you are already an AerClub  member, your existing log in and password will suffice. Collect Avios points by logging in to avios.com/ie with your AerClub details and clicking through to the eStore. For those who have not yet joined, you can join any of the airline programmes here. Why not download the free Avios app too, it will allow you book flights on the go, check your Avios balance and find out where to collect.
