1. Best for Harry Potter Fans – Warner Bros Studio Tour

Visit the Harry Potter studio tour during family breaks in the UK

Learn the secrets behind the making of Harry Potter during a visit to the Warner Bros. Studio in London. Visit Dumbledore’s office, step into the Great Hall and walk down Diagon Alley™. You’ll see actual costumes and props from all eight Harry Potter films, and the kids will love the opportunity to ride a broomstick in the green screen experience.

It is best to combine this with a night or two in London. I suggest staying around the area of Victoria. You will be within walking distance of many of London’s top landmarks, such as Buckingham Palace, Big Ben and the London Eye, and you can pick up a coach from Victoria Station directly to the Studio. Also, if you fly to London Gatwick Airport, the Gatwick Express will take you directly to Victoria Station.

If a day to Warner Bros. Studio is not enough for your family, bring a little more magic to your trip and stay in Georgian House, a Harry Potter themed hotel in Victoria.

Legoland can be booked as a stand alone trip, especially during the summer months when the water park is open. Alternatively combine with a family city break to London. Legoland is located 20km from London Heathrow Airport, and also accessible from other London airports.

3. Best for Animal Lovers – Port Lympne Hotel & Reserve, Kent

Port Lympne Hotel and Reserve is a place that is on my own wish list. It will not only please the animal lovers in your house, but its safari experience will make you think you have travelled to the far flung plains of Africa. Port Lympne is home to over 900 animals, including free-roaming giraffes, and the UK’s largest collection of life sized prehistoric creatures in its Dinosaur Forest.

The Reserve is a breeding sanctuary for rare and endangered species. Wherever possible, they aim to return animals born at Port Lympne to protected areas of their natural habitat. Your stay here is supporting animal conservation charity work around the world.

Port Lympne Hotel & Reserve - unique family break in the UK

For one of the most memorable family breaks in the UK, why not stay in one of the luxury treehouses, wigwams, or glamping pods. I can’t decide between the amazing Treehouses or the Leopard Creek Wigwams – which have panoramic windows, underfloor heating, a large outdoor leopard viewing area, as well as a complimentary buggy to explore the reserve.

Port Lympne is located about 70 minutes from Gatwick airport by car. Trains are also available from London to Westenhanger Station.

Manchester UTD

You can be pretty sure that there will be a sporting fixture of some kind on in the UK on any given day. From Premier League football matches, to yearly events such as Wimbledon, or the F1 British Grand Prix. It is best to contact a sports tours specialist such as Sports Entertainment Tours, Marathon Sports Travel or Cassidy Travel if are looking to source tickets to popular fixtures.

A football stadium tour is another popular gift idea. This tour of Old Trafford includes a tour of the stadium, entry to the Museum and a meal in the Manchester United Red Café afterwards.

6. Best for thrill seekers – Alton Towers

Alton Towers is the UK's most popular theme parks for family breaks in the UK

Spread over 500 acres, Alton Towers is the UK’s biggest theme park  and appeals to all age groups and levels of bravery, with its offering of over 50 rides and attractions. It won the theme park of the year at last year’s theme park awards, and is undoubtedly one of the best theme parks in Europe.

For thrill seekers, the infamous Oblivion and Nemesis rides are sure to leave you speechless, and you won’t know whether to laugh or cry as you make your way through the dark and terrifying Alton Towers Dungeon.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Alton Towers is also home to CBeebies Land which is hugely popular with young children. In addition to the incredible selection of rides and rollercoasters, Alton Towers also has a water park located within their Splash Landings Hotel. This makes Alton Towers a top choice for family breaks in the UK.

East Midlands airport is approximately 45-minute drive and car rental is the most convenient option. Alternatively, you could take the ferry to Holyhead and drive 2 hours 45 minutes to Alton Towers. Consider an overnight stop in the lovely town of Chester and a visit to Cheshire Oakes outlet centre or a visit to Chester Zoo.

From Mamma Mia to Matilda, Frozen to The Lion King, there are so many great family shows in London’s West End. Why not treat yourself and your daughter to weekend of shopping and a show in London?

London has all the popular high street stores for teenagers, as well as plenty of toy shops for younger children too. Hamleys has seven floors filled with a mind-blowing 50,000 toys and Harrods’ toy department on the fourth floor has been impressively designed into eight colourful suites each dedicated to a different toy category.

They are are located in Kent, Devon, Durham and Yorkshire, so you can combine a day out in Diggerland with a stay in your choice of cities.

10. Best for little environmentalists – The Eden Project

The Eden Project for families

The Eden Project is an educational charity that is located on what was once a derelict site. It is now home to the largest indoor rainforest in the world and is living proof of the environmental changes that can be made if we choose to do so.

Made up of space-age like Biomes that showcase the flora and fauna from around the world, children will learn about the best ways to look after our planet.

There are lots of fun activities to do too! England’s fastest zip wire as well as an aerial trekking course, climbing walls and a giant swing are located here. You can also go a step further and take a leap of faith on The Drop, or simulate base jumping on The Big Air. These are operated by Hangloose, a separate company that is onsite – additional charges apply.

Weekend in Rome, 21st January, Flights & 4 Star Hotel, 3 Nights, €199!

Sarah at the Colosseum, Rome (1)

A weekend in Rome is a great idea at any time of year. No matter how many times you visit you can’t help but marvel at its beauty.

You would want to be made of stone if Rome did not impress you. There are ancient wonders at every corner – The Colosseum, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, I could go on and on. You could spend a week here and not see everything, but a weekend in Rome should allow you to see many of the highlights and soak up the atmosphere of this great city.

Rome is a walkable city and many of the top attractions are close together, however, it is important that you pre-book entrance tickets to the top attractions in advance. I also recommend pre booking a city tour on your first day to get your bearings – the Vespa tour or golf cart tour are just some of my favourites.

Winter or Spring is a great time to book a weekend in Rome  – temperatures are ideal for sightseeing and there are less crowds around – airfares and hotel prices are cheaper too! Aer Lingus and Ryanair fly twice daily on most days from Dublin airport, and there is a twice weekly flight from Cork airport with Ryanair.

I found return flights from Dublin for €59 from Dublin and €120 from Cork, departing Saturday the 21st of January for three nights. A three-night stay at the 4-star Hotel Principessa Isabella is only €140 per person including breakfast – so you can enjoy a weekend in Rome for less than €200 per person!

There are many other hotel choices to choose from. The popular Hotel Capo d´África – Colosseo is €202 per person for a three night stay, or the 5-star NH Collection Palazzo Cinquecento is €335. Check out some of my recommendations on where to stay in Rome here:

20 Luxury Short Breaks for Special Occasion Holidays

Nobu Hotel Ibiza

From Ibiza to Iceland, Santorini to St Emilion, I’ve got 20 luxury short breaks to mark that special occasion in style.

Bucket list holidays are one thing, but sometimes we don’t have the time to embark on a two or three-week trip to a far flung destination. I am often asked about luxury short breaks to celebrate a big birthday or special occasion. I have chosen 20 holiday ideas that are easily accessible, but are also luxury destinations that are ideal to mark that milestone in your life.

InstagramI have included luxury hotels, unique experiences, as well as some top class adventures that I think you will love! And, if you are looking to travel further afield or for a longer duration, this post might be of interest:

Luxury Short Breaks in Europe

1. Book a room with a view in Positano

driving the Amalfi Coast is one of Europes best travel experiences

Positano is an iconic place to celebrate a special occasion. Even if you have been fortunate to visit the Amalfi Coast, you probably stayed in one of the nearby towns of Sorrento or Amalfi. A stay in Positano, is a bucket list experience in its own right, but to have a room with a view of the Bay of Naples is the ultimate way to mark that special occasion.

The five-star celebrity hangout Il San Pietro de Positano is regarded as the best hotel in Positano, but it will have a price tag to match. However, there are many alternatives to choose from – the location and views are arguably more important than the five-star rating.

How to get there:

Fly direct to Naples with Ryanair or Aer Lingus. Transfer time to Positano is one hour and twenty minutes, but the Amalfi Coast is one of the world’s best scenic drives, so you may decide to hire a car instead.

2. Stay inside the city walls of Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik
The medieval city of Dubrovnik should be on everyone’s wish list. It is so well preserved and looks like something straight out of a fairytale.

There are many great hotel choices both inside and outside the walled city. If visiting for a short break it is good to stay inside or at least very close to the Old Town.

The Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik is the closest luxury hotel to the Old Town, and is located just minutes from the beach. Set in a historic building, this hotel blends old world charm with contemporary style beautifully.

Alternatively the Rixos Premium Dubrovnik’s location – set into cliffs with panoramic sea views, is a great choice for spa and beach lovers, and a 15-minute walk will take you to the city walls of Dubrovnik’s Old Town. If visiting with friends, there are some gorgeous villas inside the walled city, see lots more in this post:

3. Stay at the Splendido Hotel, Portofino

Best hotels in Europe - Splendido Hotel, Portofino

We had a pleasure of  staying at the Splendido Hotel for an overnight escape about 20 years ago, and it is still one of my top travel experiences. It is one of the world’s best hotels and it also happens to be located in one the most idyllic locations in Italy.

Set on a hillside overlooking the bay and colourful buildings of Portofino, the Splendido not only offers outstanding service and lavish furnishings, but it is less than 10 minutes walk from the pretty harbour and its multi-million Euro yachts.

Splendido Mare, is its little sister, which is more reasonably priced and is located in the harbour. Guests have also access to facilities of the Splendido hotel, and a complimentary shuttle connects the two properties.

How to get there?

Ryanair have announced direct flights to Genoa this winter, so there has never been a better time to visit. Transfer time from the airport to Portofino by car is approximately 40 minutes, which makes it an ideal destination for luxury short breaks.

Sometimes special occasions are best celebrated with friends or family, and a villa holiday in the Algarve is a great way to do it. Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago are the most popular areas for villa holidays, however look to the resorts of Alvor and Lagos if you prefer a more low-key vibe.

Villa Casa Aggi is a luxurious detached villa with a large outdoor pool and bright modern interiors. It is only 15 minutes walk to the superb Meia Praia beach, and a short drive from the historical town of Lagos, which has a great selection of shops, bars and restaurants.

5. Stay at a Château in St Emilion, France

Saint-Emilion, France

Combining wine tasting with a stay in a French Château is my idea of the perfect luxury short break. There are several wine tasting trails to choose from – the Alsace and Loire Valley trails are probably the most famous, but the picturesque villages and charming Châteaux on the Bordeaux trail took my breath away.

We stayed near the UNESCO World Heritage village of Saint-Emilion many years ago and loved it. The home of Pomerol, Margaux, as well as countless lesser known vineyards, this region is a little piece of heaven.

The Château Hôtel Grand Barrail is surprisingly good value, but for the ultimate bucket list experience check out the Hôtel de Pavie. Located in the heart of the village, this old stone building is steeped in history and boasts a 2 Michelin-starred restaurant. This hotel is on my Europe bucket list and I can’t wait to stay there one day.

6. Combine culture and sophistication in Istanbul

best luxury short breaks in Europe at Four Seasons Bosphorus Istanbul

Istanbul is a city that is on my own wish list. Where else can you visit Europe and Asia on one trip? As well as exploring the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and the Grand Bazaar, its diverse cuisine and bustling nightlife is sure to please.

There is only one place to stay if you are looking for a luxury short break for a special occasion and that’s the Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at the Bosphorus. As the name suggests, its idyllic location on the banks of the Bosphorus ensures epic views of Europe and Asia from morning till night.

What was once a 19th century Ottoman palace, this hotel combines historical architecture with lavish decor beautifully. With an indoor and outdoor heated pool, as well as a garden with spacious terrace, you may forget you are in a city hotel at all. If you can manage to tear yourself away from its beautiful surroundings, you can take the hotel shuttle bus or a water taxi to the old town.

How to get there?

7. Celebrate in style in Ibiza

Best luxury short breaks in Ibiza

Contrary to what you might think, Ibiza is not just for 18-30 year olds. If you are looking for luxury short breaks in top class hotels with celebrity-style hangouts, Ibiza is where it’s at. Party all night in the chic Ibiza Town or catch the best sunset in the original sunset bar, Café del Mar.

The adult-only Ushuaia Ibiza Beach Hotel is the most popular for those looking for lively celebrations, while the Robert de Niro-owned Nobu Hotel Ibiza Bay is ideal for those who want to be away from the hustle and bustle, and also like to enjoy great food. The latter is a member of the Small Luxury Hotels in the World.

10. Book a luxury suite in Santorini

a cave stay in Santorini is on every Europe bucket list

The popularity of Santorini was taken up a notch over the last few years with the introduction of direct flights from Dublin. There many different accommodation choices to choose from if planning luxury short breaks for a special occasion.

Many hotels are built into the caves which lead out to a private jacuzzi, where you can enjoy the stunning sunsets and Caldera views.

The Aliko Luxury Suites tick all these boxes and more. Aliko Suites have luxury written all over them, from the beautifully furnished domed area to the large private terrace with comfortable loungers. They also offer a pillow menu, bathrobe, slippers and a fully stocked mini bar.

Another alternative, if you can manage to get availability, is a favourite with Celebrities – Cavo Tagoo. All modern suites here include either a hot tub or a private pool, and the hotel can arrange boat trips and private cruises to explore the rest of the island.

However, if you prefer a self catering option, I have some gorgeous Airbnbs in this post:

11. Stay in a Glass Igloo at Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort, Finland

Glass Igloo at Kakslauttanen with the Northern Lights.

Not all special occasion holidays need to include sunshine or city breaks. A stay in the iconic glass igloos at Kakslauttanen Arctic is sure to tick more than one item off your Europe bucket list. Its location places you in a prime position for viewing the Aurora Borealis.

Although this natural phenomenon can never be guaranteed, the location of Kakslauttanen, 250km north of the Arctic Circle in Finland’s Lapland, means the odds are certainly in your favour.

The Glass Igloos offer a memorable opportunity to watch the magic come to life through the thermal glass. But if you’re staying for a few nights, I would recommend having a look at the Kelo-Glass Igloos which combine the cosy amenities of a log cabin, including private sauna and fireplace, with the spectacular glass roof above the bedroom.

The Glass Igloos at Kakslauttanen are on every Europe bucket list

The best time for viewing the northern lights is from September to March, and the winter months offer an array of exciting snow activities such as husky safari, cross country skiing, ice fishing and snowmobiling. A short stay in an igloo in Lapland is one of the best luxury short breaks for special occasion holidays.

Iceland is an ideal destination for luxury short breaks from Ireland, but if you want to make your trip even more memorable, book a stay at The Retreat at Blue Lagoon. However, sipping a latte on St Mark’s Square and taking a gondola ride through the canals have to be done too!

There are many luxury hotels to choose from – the St Regis is probably the best but expect a price tag to match. luxury short breaks in the South of France

The South of France is the sophisticated choice for luxury short breaks. Nice is a good option as it has a gorgeous old town, a long sandy beach and is located just 7km from the airport.

For the ultimate bucket-list experience, check-in to to the famous Le Negresco Hotel on Promenade des Anglais. This 100 year old Belle Époque palace is a landmark in the city, and has housed many guests including Queen Elizabeth II, Grace Kelly and James Dean.

Antibes is also a favourite with the rich and famous, and the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc is often referred to as one of the best hotels in the world.

The train hugs the coast so take time to visit Cannes, St Tropez or even Monaco, and if  you really want to splash out you can go by boat. Although hotel prices can be expensive, airfares to Nice are usually good value, and dining out is not as expensive as you may think.

It may surprise you to know that Niagara Falls is located just 90 minutes from Toronto, and with daily flights from Dublin it is easily accessible for a luxury short break.

You can choose to stay in Toronto and book a day-trip to Niagara, or book a hotel overlooking the Falls for the complete bucket-list experience. Another option is to book a two-centre holiday – a few nights in Toronto followed by a night or two at Niagara.

There are many great hotels in Toronto including the Four Seasons and the Shangri-La, but when it comes to Niagara Falls, it is vital you book a hotel with a Falls View room.

My Top 12 Picks For A Girls Weekend Away

girls on beach_opt

From Benalmadena to Berlin, Puerto del Carmen to Positano, designer shopping in Vilamoura, to outlet shopping in New York – check out my top picks for a girls weekend away.

I’m pretty sure all girls love a girls weekend away. Whether it’s lying on a beach, or shopping till you drop; add in some cocktails and no matter where you are – it’s paradise! I have 12 ideas to suit all tastes, from city breaks to sun holidays – one for every month of the year 😉.

1. Costa del Sol

girls weekend away in marbella

It is hard to beat the Costa del Sol for a girls weekend away, in fact I enjoyed many girls trips there over the years. There are flights available from most Irish airports and a wide choice of resorts to suit all budgets.

Choose Benalmadena for the lively marina, Fuengirola for excellent value shopping and restaurants, or Marbella for glitz and glamour.

2. London

girls weekend in London

London is not only one of the world’s greatest cities, but it is also an ideal choice if you are short on time. I went last year with my girlfriends – we flew out early Saturday morning and returned Sunday evening. Although we only went for one night, it felt like we had a girls weekend away.

We shopped, had a delicious lunch in London’s oldest wine bar, and even managed to catch the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace. Make sure you book the hop-on hop-off Big Bus Tour – not only will you get to see London’s highlights, but you will also get a cruise on the Thames for free!

The Algarve is great value for short break. There are over ten flights per day from Irish airports, so you probably pick up a bargain, particularly if you travel off peak.

Choose Albufeira for lively night life, Vilamoura for upmarket shopping and dining, or Alvor for a more relaxed vibe with great restaurants and a beach that stretches for miles.

4. Paris

girls weekend in paris

Paris is always a good idea, and it doesn’t have to be springtime! Combine some sightseeing with boutique shopping, and take time out for a long lunch with some delicious French wine.

Visit the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, Montmartre – the list is endless. Of course no girls weekend away to Paris would be complete without a trip to famous department store – Galeries Lafayette!

New York is on every girls holiday wish list! Shop till you drop, feel the buzz of Time Square, dine at celebrity hangouts, and dance the night away in some of the world’s best clubs.

Of course there are also lots of sights to see too. Four is the perfect number to save on expensive hotel bills and cab fares, not to mention you will have the whole ‘ Sex and the city’ vibe going on…

6. Lanzarote

girls weekend away in Lanzarote

If you are looking for a winter sun break, Lanzarote is the ideal choice. Expect year round sunshine, good value hotel prices and duty free shopping. Although a slightly longer flight than mainland Spain or the Algarve, the main resort of Puerto del Carmen is located less than 10 minutes from the airport – so you will be relaxing on a sun lounger in no time!

Choose Puerto del Carmen for a lively holiday, or Playa Blanca for a quiet more relaxed vibe.

 7. Berlin

girls weekend in berlin

Fancy a city break? Berlin is a great choice for a girls weekend away. Not only does it have some of the best nightlife in any European city, but you can also enjoy great sightseeing and shopping too.

The Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie and the Berlin Wall are all located in the heart of the city, so you can combine some culture with cocktails, and get the best of both worlds.

Berlin has some of the best basement nightclubs, cocktail bars and craft beer houses, so if nightlife and sightseeing is what you seek – look no further!

What a first day in Dubai, talk about a city of contrasts! We had an amazing Arabic breakfast in the @arabianteahouse this morning and then went to the @burjkhalifa this afternoon. To go from old Dubai to new Dubai is quite startling – it’s really like two different cities. There is so much to do here, but a visit to the worlds tallest building, the Burj Khalifa is a must. I collaborated with @atdattractions who have tickets to the 125th floor for only €36! It’s located at the #DubaiMall and right beside the Dubai Fountain, which has displays every half hour from 630pm. We spent a half day exploring that whole area and had dinner there too. Check out my stories to see what we got up to. . . . . . . . #dubai #burjkhalifa #thingstodoindubai #travelblogger #travelgram #travelpic #wearetravelgirls #travel #wings #wingsofdesire #instadubai #dubailife #dubaimall #irishtravelblogger #dubaiinstagram

Dubai may be the celebrities choice for a girls weekend away – but if you can afford it, why not? With daily direct flights from Dublin Airport, you can choose to extend your stay to five, six or even seven nights. You can expect year round sunshine, deluxe hotels and the world’s largest shopping malls.

Go to the top of the world’s tallest building, enjoy a desert safari, and if you really want to push the boat out, pop into the Burj Al Arab for Afternoon Tea. Dubai is expensive to dine out, my top-tip would be to book a hotel on a half-board basis.

9. Positano

positano for a girls weekend away

Positano is one of those places that is ideal for a 30th, 40th or even 50th birthday treat. Grab a few friends together who are celebrating a birthday in the same year, and just book it!

It has to be one of Europe’s most idyllic resorts. Take a day trip to Capri and marvel at the designer shops, enjoy some delicious Italian food and take in the Amalfi Coast’s stunning sea views.

Top Tip: Check out some of the amazing villas on Airbnb – prices are a lot less than you might think. It is also nice to have the place to yourself and maybe even have your own private pool. 10. Ibiza

cocktails on holidays

Contrary to what you might think, nightlife in Ibiza is not just for students… If you are looking for top class hotels and celebrity-style hangouts, Ibiza is where it’s at. Party all night in the chic Ibiza Town or catch the best sunset in the original sunset bar, Café del Mar.

If you want a more sophisticated choice, stay in the uber cool Ushuaia Beach Hotel, and dance the night away at Pacha. Ibiza town wins my vote though -it is a beautiful old town and is ideal for shopping. Stop by Bar 1805 for some cocktails!

11. A girls weekend in the Greek Islands

A post shared by Sarah Slattery – Travel Expert (@the_travel_expert)

Greece is becoming more and more popular for short breaks as there are direct flights to many of the islands, making a girls weekend away very accessible.

Choose the old towns of Chania and Rethymo in Crete – Ryanair fly thrice-weekly to Chania, or a weekend in Rhodes Town, one of the Seven Wonders of the World – also served by Ryanair from Dublin airport.

Santorini is the celebrity choice, served by both Ryanair and Aer Lingus, but you better be prepared to share its stunning sunsets with 1000s of other holidaymakers! And Corfu and Thessaloniki should not be overlooked either – when it comes to a girls weekend away, there are plenty of options in Greece.

12. Nice, South of France

girls weekend in Nice

The South of France is the sophisticated choice for a girls weekend away. Not only does it have a gorgeous old town, but it also has a long sandy beach – what more could you want?

Check out the French style on the Promenade des Anglais, enjoy mouthwatering food from morning till night, and contrary to what you might think, you can enjoy some great value boutique shopping there too.

Another big advantage of booking a girls weekend away in Nice is that you are only 7km from the airport, and the train station is located right in the centre of town.

You can visit Cannes, Antibes, St Tropez or even Monaco without having to hire a car – and if  you really want to splash out you can go by boat! Although hotel prices can be expensive, airfares are usually good value, and dining out is not as expensive as you may think.

If you are looking for a little more glitz and glamour, and have managed to gather a few friends together, then I suggest booking a two-bedroom apartment in the fabulous Marriott Beach Resort.

Weekend Break in Amsterdam – 3 Nights in 4-Star Hotel & Flights – €254pp

canal-2659062_1920

The New Year has arrived and with that comes a lust for new experiences and adventure. I have found a brilliant offer for a weekend break in Amsterdam that should fuel those urges even more.

Amsterdam is a city with an incredible aesthetic and history. The hotel for the offer I have found is the 4-Star Bilderburg Hotel Jan Luyken and this places you right in the historical heart of the city. Within walking distance of your hotel you will find the Riijksmuseum, The Van Gogh Museum, The Heineken Experience and the powerful Anne Frank Museum. The latter two are a good half an hour walk away but this is definitely manageable in Amsterdam on a nice day.

Weekend Break in Amsterdam

Also close to your hotel you will find Vondelpark. If you’re looking to get the full Dutch experience, you simply have to rent out a bike and cycle around to explore every corner of this beautiful park.

The hotel has excellent ratings on Expedia; scoring 4.3/5 from over 1700 reviews. This offer is for March when the temperature starts to become nice and mild making it perfect for a city break. The flights for the offer are direct with Ryanair and the dates are from Thursday the 7th to Sunday the 10th, but if these dates don’t suit simply edit the search via the link below, to suit your requirements. The price of €254pp covers the cost of the hotel and flights.

Winter time is the optimum time to see them, so fingers crossed you will too. We also swam in the Blue Lagoon. October Bank Holiday Weekend In Porto, Flights & 4* Apartment, 3 Nights, €259!

porto

Porto is one of the oldest cities in Europe! Why not choose some where different for a city break this year and try a weekend in Porto – you won’t be disappointed.

I spent the October Bank holiday weekend in Porto last year and loved it!  This medieval city is full of colourful buildings, I was genuinely amazed at how beautiful the Porto was. The Ribeira district is a Unesco World Heritage site and is full of local wine bars, restaurants and old buildings close to the waterfront. Enjoy a glass of wine or a meal by the river, and soak up the atmosphere, for a fraction of what you would pay at home. In fact Porto of late has become one of Europe’s top food destinations. You wont find top celebrity restaurants here, but lots of local eateries serving delicious Portuguese food, at rock bottom prices. Renowned as the birthplace of port, there are also numerous wine cellars offering tastings and tours. There are plenty of good places to go at night time too, with bands playing in various venues across the city.

weekend in Porto

Porto is not all about food and wine though. No visit would be complete without seeing the Se Cathedral, Saõ Francisco church and Clérigos Tower. You will also be drawn to the many churches with blue tiles that are scattered throughout the city. Like all cities there is a great shopping street and let’s not forget Porto is beside the coast, so if you dont fancy a boat trip along the Douro River, why not spend the day at the beach, which is only 15 minutes from the centre of Porto.  For more information read my blog on why you need to choose Porto for your next city break.

I found a great deal staying in the 4* Porto Cinema apartments. Highly rated on tripadvisor and centrally located, this is a great choice to explore all that Porto has to offer.  Fly from Dublin on the 26th of October and enjoy a three night stay here for only €259 per person!

Staycations and Short Breaks on RTE’s Marian Finucane Show

Radio-Show-Feature-RTE-1

As the summer draws to a close why not grab a last minute getaway. I have city breaks in Madrid, Lisbon and Rome, and Irish breaks in Kilkee, Belfast, Enniscorthy, Enniskerry and Westport. Here are my recommendations for staycations and short breaks as discussed on RTE’s Marian Finucane Show this morning.

August break to Madrid

Late August is always a good time to get a deal and this year is no exception. Kids are ready to go back to school and those looking for a September break tend to overlook late August, when in fact, prices are much lower. ClickandGo.com have matched the low airfares with some good city breaks.

I like this deal to Madrid, it combines sightseeing, sun and shopping all in one! You can take a tour of the Royal Palace and shop till you drop on the Gran Via – one of Europe’s finest shopping streets.

Madrid is also home to Europe’s largest Penneys so there is shopping here for everyone! There is over 3,000 restaurants, so its safe to say it’s a foodie destination and there is enough bars and clubs to satisfy any night-owls. Fly with Aer Lingus and enjoy a three night stay in the four star Via Castellana hotel for only €240 on the 28th of August.

Lisbon break with river cruise in September

Although the Algarve is one of our most popular holiday choices, the capital, Lisbon is often overlooked. You can choose to go for a holiday (which I did) and stay in one of the beach resorts, or take a city break and stay in Lisbon itself. Temperatures rarely get higher than 25 degrees in Summer and lower than 14 degrees in Winter so it is a great choice for city break.

The old style trams are the best way to get around the city and there are numerous sights to see, including The Belem Tower (defence tower), the Castelo de Sáo Jorge  and the Cristo Rei, which is a large statue of Christ that you can climb and see great views of the city.

There are some great restaurants, cafes and music clubs, all very reasonably priced. I went with my kids and there was lots for them to do too. The Aquarium is Europe’s largest and well worth a visit.

If you have time take the train to the ancient city of Sintra and some of the nice beach resorts along the coast. Theholidayshop.ie are offering a three night break in a central four star hotel from €339 on the 25th of September. They are also including a free river cruise too.

Cheese & Wine Tasting Weekend in Rome in November

Rome is a great city break destination at any time of year, but personally I think it’s better to go in the winter time, as it’s less crowded. There is so much to see in Rome it doesn’t matter how many times you go, you will always find something new to discover.

I found a great deal on travalue.ie where they offer a FREE cheese and wine tasting evening, when you book a two night stay. The price for flights and a two night stay in the popular three star Galileo hotel in November is only €199 per person. They also have offers in September and October from €326 per person.

short breaks at home and abroad as discussed with marian finucane

Christmas Market Breaks in December

Christmas markets are very much back in vogue. Ryanair and Aer Lingus have added extra capacity to many cities throughout the winter with lots of low priced airfares available. I like Berlin as it has over 50 markets to choose from and something to appeal to everyone.

Sip some mulled wine while enjoying Christmas carols at the traditional markets of Charlottenburg Castle or enjoy one of the Christmas Rock concerts at the Spandau Old Town market. Europe’s largest mobile toboggan run and ice rink are at the lively Potsdamer Platz market, so there is plenty of choice for everyone.

The price for flights with Aer Lingus and a three night stay in the 4* Park Inn by Radisson Alexanderplatz is only €249 on the 7th of December.

City Breaks

For those who wish to stay closer to home, there are plenty of options here in Ireland.

August family break: Feather Down, Loop Head, Co Clare.

Recently I had the pleasure of glamping in Ireland’s first Feather Down tents. They have sites all over Europe and have only come to Ireland this year. They are in the grounds of a popular glamping site, Purecamping in Loophead. It is the perfect escape from a big city, you really switch off and it’s a great family experience. The ‘tents’ if you can call them that have 3 bedrooms, a private toilet, shower, stove and also a BBQ if you are lucky to get the weather.

They still have availability in August, the price for a three night stay is €599 on the 12th or 19th of August. If you want a cheaper option the Purecamping furnished bell tents are pretty cool too and are priced at €75 per night.

You can also choose an unfurnished tent from €35. No matter which option you choose you can avail of the excellent facilities on site, including yoga classes, sauna and a wood fired pizza oven.

Spa breaks

The difference between Monart and other luxury hotels is that Monart is Ireland’s only destination Spa property. It offers a unique adults-only environment and is situated on 100 acres – you will feel utterly relaxed here. Monart was recently awarded ‘runner up best spa retreat worldwide’, by Conde Nast Traveller.

It was also named as Ireland’s best destination spa for four years in a row. If you are looking for a spa break, there is no doubt – Monart is the best!  They have a three night midweek break from €329 per person, on the 29th of August, other dates are also available at a slightly higher price.

This special offer includes breakfast each day plus dinner in their renowned restaurant on one evening. You will have unrestricted access to the thermal suite and they are also including a 30 minute spa treatment. Monart is situated on 100 acres – you will feel utterly relaxed here.

short breaks at home and abroad as discussed with marian finucane

If three nights seems too long, the Rainforest Spa in Enniskerry ( Wicklow) have an excellent offer for a one night stay at the Summerhill House Hotel You will receive a glass of bubbly and petit fours on arrival, an hours use of the spa facilities, a treatment of your choice ( see website for exact choices), breakfast and evening meal – and all for €129 mid week or €149 at the weekend, available in August.

Operation Transformation at Hotel Westport

If you have over indulged during the summer months and want to get in shape for Christmas, then the Hotel Westport’s Operation Transformation package might be just what you need! You can choose a three day break from €199 or a five day break from €309 from the 9th of October.

This four star family run hotel have been running this program, twice a year for four years and they have proved very popular. You will receive breakfast and dinner each day ( where light options are available) and you can join in the many aerobics and wellness classes that are provided free of charge.

There is entertainment nightly and no single supplement – so it’s a great way to meet new people. There is no pressure to participate in all the activities, it is very much a laid back approach, in fact if you do not wish to be assessed, that’s fine too. If you fancy a night out in Westport, he hotel is located only five minutes from the centre.

Belfast overnight with Game of Thrones Tour

For any Game of Thrones fans, this is a must! The 4* boutique hotel, Tara Lodge is offering an over night stay with breakfast, and an action packed day visiting filming locations across Northern Ireland. Start your journey along the Causeway Coastal route visiting famous sites from the show. Stop for lunch before visiting the Giants Causeway.

The price is only £72 per person and it is still available in August. Weekends are busy but check out their website for more details. The Tara Lodge is rated number 1 of 45 Belfast hotels on tripadvisor and receives excellent reviews. It is a family run guesthouse / hotel and offers friendly service and excellent value.
