Family Breaks in Wexford At The Riverside Park Hotel & Leisure Club

Riverside 3-0787

With spacious family rooms, a choice of dining options, and a leisure centre with children’s pool, the Riverside Park Hotel is a super choice to enjoy family breaks in Wexford.

I have featured the Riverside Park Hotel & Leisure Club on my occasions in my travel deals posts – I love their spacious family rooms and their family-friendly facilities. Previous guests agree with me too – it was a Travellers Choice winner in 2020 and is rated as excellent on Tripadvisor. So I was delighted when the Riverside Park Hotel got in touch and asked me to showcase their latest family breaks in Wexford.

The Riverside Hotel has a wide selection of family breaks available. Their summer family breaks include breakfast, a four-course evening meal on the night of your choice, and a family pass to one of Wexford’s top attractions. They also have single parent family breaks – something that I am often asked about.

As well as great family deals, here are five great reasons to choose the Riverside Park Hotel for family breaks in Wexford.

1. The superior family rooms are cleverly designedsuperior family rooms at the Riverside Park Hotel, Wexford.

I have seen many family rooms in hotels over the years, but I was really impressed with the clever design in the Riverside Park’s superior family rooms. Not only are these rooms very spacious – they can accommodate two adults and three children, but some have individual TV’s and headsets for children, that hang on a dividing wall in the centre of the room. Some of the rooms can accommodate four children – please call hotel directly to arrange this.

This means parents and children can enjoy their own choice of entertainment in comfort. As well as this great amenity, you can expect tea and coffee making facilities and complimentary mineral water in your room. Superior rooms vary in design and layout – most have the dividing wall, but others are open plan with a separate tv in the ceiling. Standard rooms are also very well equipped and accommodate families of four, but do not have individual TV’s for children.

2. There are lots of family-friendly facilities on-site

Swimming pool at the Riverside Park Hotel, Wexford

The hotel’s leisure centre boasts an indoor heated pool and a separate children’s pool, as well as a fully equipped gym and Rejuvenate Treatment Rooms – just incase you fancy a treatment while the kids are playing. A kids club usually runs during school holidays but may not be in operation this summer. However, there are two playgrounds beside the hotel with climbing frames, slides, swings, interactive stations and a zip wire.

3. There are three dining options to choose from.

The Riverside Park Hotel has a wide selection of dining options to suit all the family. Choose the full bar menu or daily carvery at the Prom Bar, delicious steaks at the lively Alamo Steakhouse, or fine-dining at the elegant Moorings restaurant.

All hotel restaurants use high quality locally grown produce, and kids menus are available in all three restaurants. Vegan and vegetarian options are also available.

4. Location, location, location

The Riverside Park Hotel enjoys a picturesque location right on the banks of the River Slaney in Enniscorthy. There is a delightful 5km river walk that starts right outside the hotel, and it is only five minutes from the town centre. It is just 19km from the famous Curracloe beach, and within easy access of Wexford’s top attractions.

5. Wexford is full of top class family attractions

We enjoyed family breaks in Wexford on a few occasions and I think Wexford is a great destination for a family holiday in Ireland. As well as six Blue Flag beaches, Wexford is home to Ireland’s only Seal Rescue Centre,  the Secret Valley Wild Life Park, the oldest operating lighthouse in the world – Hook Lighthouse and one of my own personal favourite attractions, the The National Heritage Park.

The National Heritage Park is an interactive open-air museum. It shows how Irish people lived through the Stone Age, Bronze Age, when the Vikings came, right up to when the Normans came in 1169 – my kids loved it. There are many more attractions for families in Wexford, you can see them here.

50 Hotels With Large Family Rooms In Ireland

hotel du palais

Struggling to find hotels with large family rooms in Ireland? I’ve hand-picked fifty Irish hotels that are family friendly and can accommodate families of five, six, and more in some cases.

Many hotels with family rooms only accommodate families of four, and if you are reading this post I am sure you are one of the many people who have more than two children, and are looking for hotels with large family rooms in Ireland.

Instagram

I have a separate post listing hotels with lodges in Ireland which are ideal for large families, but they can be difficult to secure in peak season, and they tend to be more expensive than hotel rooms. Many families are happy to share a hotel room – for some it might be to keep the cost down, while others like the comfort of having their children in the same room as them while they are away.

Mother and daughter together in a large family room at the Intercontinental hotel.

I receive many requests from parents looking for hotels with large family rooms in Ireland, so I decided to collate a list of some of our most popular hotels below. I have hand-picked three to five-star hotels across many counties in Ireland and all are family friendly. Hopefully you will find something to suit you.

It is important to point out that not all hotel facilities may be in operation. Kids clubs, fitness classes and health suites may be operating at reduced capacity or not at all, so if there is a facility that you are particularly interested in, it is best to check directly with the hotel. You may also need to speak to the hotel directly if adding a fold out bed in a room, these may not show online.

Most of these hotels with large family rooms in Ireland include my affiliate links – where I receive a small commission if a booking is made, but at no additional cost to you.

5-star hotels with large family rooms

46. Intercontinental Hotel, Dublin

Luxury hotels in Dublin with large family rooms - Intercontinental Hotel.

We had the pleasure of staying in the Intercontinental Hotel recently and loved the experience. The standard family rooms are extremely spacious, I’m told the most spacious of all five-star hotels in Dublin. However if your budget allows, upgrade to one of the executive suites which have a balcony and can easily accommodate a family of five.

You can choose to dine in the Lobby Bar or the elegant Seasons Restaurant, both of which have superb kids menus, that are very well priced. There is a health club with a 14 metre pool which children can also avail of, and if you fancy a stroll before dinner, Sandymount beach and Herbert Park are both close by.

Family HolidaysHolidays in Ireland

Is Kelly’s The Best Family Hotel in Ireland?

Kelly's Resort Hotel, Wexford

Perched on five miles of sandy beach, with award winning cuisine and a host of activities for children, is Kelly’s the best family hotel in Ireland?

For years I have heard friends boast of Kelly’s fine food and fantastic kids facilities. The Irish Independent’s reader awards named it as their favourite place to stay for 2018 and it was voted the most family friendly hotel in Ireland in last years Gold Medal Awards. These are on top of a plethora of other awards that Kelly’s has received for as long as I care to remember! I was interested to see what all the fuss was about, so when Wexford Tourism invited us to stay I jumped at the chance.

Waiting in line to check-in was bizarre. I overheard two separate couples rebook for the following year. There was no question of cost, they were confirming their booking for the same time, a year later. I asked the receptionist if this was normal and she said she has seen four generations of families staying at Kelly’s since she started working there – a startling statistic. I recalled that I have ever holidayed in a place that my parents stayed….

I couldn’t help but notice that throughout the hotel there were multi generational families holidaying together. Kelly’s is a bit on an anomaly – it manages to cater superbly for children but also for adults, even grandparents! It is not only the clientele that come back year after year. It was heartwarming to see so many long-serving members of staff, who recognised guests from previous visits, a rarity in the hospitality sector these days.

kelly's the best family hotel in ireland

There is entertainment around the clock. It starts after breakfast when the kids club opens at 930am. Kelly’s have a ‘Pirates Club’ for kids aged 4 and over.  There are arts and crafts, drama and dress up, musical games, painting, pool games and much more taking place throughout the day. The ‘Starfish Club’ caters for younger children from 8.30 am – 5.00pm, however a fee of €3.00 per child per hour applies. Parents are free to spend a day at the beach, play a round of golf at the nearby championship course, or relax in the multi award-winning spa. A word of warning, prebook your spa treatments, the spa looked seriously impressive! As it was our first time to visit,  I didn’t realise how popular it was, it was booked out for our entire stay.

kelly's the best family hotel in ireland

Lunch is served from 12.30pm. Families dine together and enjoy an array of delicious hot and cold options from the buffet. I am not normally a buffet fan, but we ate here on our last day and it was excellent. The selection of salads was superb, not to mention desserts! They even had a selection of homemade ice cream with cones for the kids. If you don’t fancy buffet dining, you can also choose to opt for waiter service in Beaches, the à la carte restaurant, for breakfast or lunch.

kelly's the best family hotel in ireland

Dinner is a whole different ballgame. After an afternoon full of activities, children are encouraged to dine at the ‘kids buffet’ at 5.30pm. Personally, I found this a tad early! We happened to be out all day so this wasn’t an option for us anyway, but the idea is that kids dine separately with their new found friends. Dinner is followed by a kids disco and then back to the kids club for a movie. There is complimentary child-minding for all children from 7pm – 9pm so parents can enjoy a ‘date night’.

I spoke to a few families while I was there and they loved this arrangement. In fact this was one of the main reasons they return to Kelly’s year after year. They get to enjoy fine dining in Beaches alone, while the kids watch a movie. Kelly’s also have a remote intercom system so when you put the kids to bed, you can leave the phone off the hook and dial in to make sure there is no one awake. You can also hire staff babysitters ( €10 per hour), if you have young children or are not comfortable with this arrangement. I doubt this would be used much in international hotel chains, but Kelly’s has been a family run hotel for over 100 years.

Originally opened as a tea rooms in 1895, Kelly’s has been passed from generation to generation and has always remained a family run hotel. Kelly’s is now run by the fourth generation Bill Kelly and his wife Isabelle. Isabelle happens to be the daughter of leading French wine-makers from Chateauneuf-du-Pape – so no wonder the wine list is so good!

Laura Kelly, the fifth generation Kelly has also taken the helm beside her father. Like her father and grandfather, she studied in the famous Hotel Management school of Switzerland and has since worked in top class family resorts around the world, including Club Med. The reason I mention this is because Kelly’s has a Mediterranean resort feel to it. It is not like a typical Irish hotel. Most people book the full board package, which includes all meals, even afternoon tea! Kelly’s reminded me of an all-inclusive family resort in Spain, I don’t think I have seen anything like it anywhere else in Ireland.

We ate in Beaches twice, albeit with the kids! For a large hotel restaurant, Kelly’s not only manage to serve delicious food but the atmosphere felt more like a local restaurant than a large hotel dining room. It should be noted that young children are not allowed to dine in Beaches. The menu actually states ‘adults only’ but when I had a mild panic attack, I was told it was not enforced for older kids.

Looking around the restaurant I don’t think there was anyone under six. If you want to dine with young children you can reserve a table in the bar area and enjoy the Beaches menu there.  I thought this a little autocratic initially, but it works!

The food in Kelly’s is superb. Whether you dine at the buffet or in Beaches, for breakfast, lunch and dinner, you are guaranteed delicious meals and super service. In Beaches I enjoyed a tasty goats cheese salad starter and Cormac, the crab salad. There was no separate kids menu but there were ample dishes for kids to enjoy.

However if you have fussy eaters, they are only too happy to provide children’s food off menu. The fillet of beef was perfectly cooked, as was the scallops and black pudding. The desserts were delicious too. After one day in Kelly’s I understood why people were so obsessed with the food – it really is that good! Mr Kelly played the perfect host, checking in with all guests asking about their day and if everything is ok with their meal.

There are also lots of things that families can enjoy together. There are two large swimming pools with no restrictions on swim times, and of course the beach is on your doorstep. With miles of sandy beach and rock pools for kids to explore, a day at the beach is inevitable.

Watersports enthusiasts will love the windsurfing, kayaking and sailing lessons provided by the Rosslare Watersports centre during the Summer months. There are also indoor and outdoor tennis courts, boules and a great mini golf course, which we played on a few occasions.  As well as the kids club there is also a large pirate ship playground and a games room for kids to enjoy.

Kelly’s is unique. It is a family-run resort hotel, where parents dress up for dinner while their kids play elsewhere. Kelly’s offers escapism. Kelly’s is located in County Wexford, in Ireland’s sunny South East, which was given the name because Wexford has lower average annual rainfall than any other county in Ireland. Having lunch on the sunny rooftop balcony on our last day we almost forgot where we were. It was like the Mediterranean. With fine beaches on your doorstep, non stop entertainment for kids, mouthwatering food and a wine list to die for, it is not surprising that many believe Kelly’s is the best family hotel in Ireland. Go see for yourself!

Christmas time at the Connacht Hotel, Galway

Connacht hotel

We had the pleasure of spending an overnight in the Connacht Hotel in Galway recently. Our annual Santa visit took us to the Aillwee Cave this year so we decided to overnight in Galway the night before.

We set off on Saturday from Dublin and were there within 2 hours. The rooms were bright, modern and very spacious. Although we were only staying for one night, there was a separate living area with a kitchen which was ideal for a longer stay. WiFi is fast and free too! We dropped the bags, decided to have a quick wander around Galway and avail of the hotel’s facilities in the evening.

Connacht Hotel

The centre of Galway city is a 25 minute walk or €10 in a taxi so if you don’t fancy driving, it is easily accessible. Once you arrive in Eyre Square the lights are dazzling. Christmas market stalls are everywhere and the atmosphere is terrific. Many are happily shopping for Christmas decorations and gifts while others enjoy the hot food or mulled wine. We decided to do all of the above! The fun fair had some great rides including a large ferris wheel as well as some money making stalls like ‘ how to knock the elf off the shelf’. My kids were intrigued but despite watching for 15 minutes, not one person managed to do it! As the light fades the Christmas lights are even more impressive. Shop Street is pretty cool at any time of the year but at Christmas time it is magical.

Connacht Hotel

After a thoroughly enjoyable few hours we went back to the hotel for a ‘promised’ swim.   The swimming pool at the Connacht Hotel is fantastic. There are jacuzzis, swim lanes and ample room for adults and children to swim. Incidentally the hotel attracts many sports groups. The Treviso Rugby team were staying there when we were there, suffice to say it is very well equipped for sports enthusiasts. Not only is the 20 metre swimming pool impressive but they have fantastic fitness and exercise studios ( 40 classes each week) and a 24 hour gym.

Connacht Hotel

The family facilities at the Connacht Hotel are excellent. There is a wide selection of activities at various times during the day. From arts and crafts to talent shows, Wii games to movies, there is plenty to keep the kids happy. The Friendly Fellows kids club opens until 10pm and there was a movie on from 8 while we were there. It’s a great option for kids who don’t necessarily want games or arts and crafts, but just want to chill out and watch a movie. There is a play area for younger kids but parents need to be present.

Connacht Hotel

We dined in the hotel that evening and this was another welcome surprise. If you book a package including an evening meal, the menu is very extensive. Not a buffet in sight (my pet hate at dinner time!). Everything is included in the cost, with the exception of the 10oz sirlion steak which carries a €6 supplement. I went for the chicken curry while my husband had the beer battered cod and chips, both were really tasty. You can eat in the bar or restaurant and both have a great lively atmosphere. If you want a quiet romantic meal for two, go elsewhere! Live music started at 10pm but an Irish take on Garth Brooks wouldn’t be my choice, so we opted for an early night. Breakfast was excellent, lots of choice, pancakes to Irish pudding, we checked out quite content!

Connacht Hotel

The Connacht is a great choice for a family vacation at Christmas or any time. They have large family rooms and apartments on site, a host of activities for kids and a great family fun atmosphere. For prices and availability on the Connacht hotel click here.
