Easter & Summer Family Breaks in Wexford at Riverside Park Hotel, 2ad & 2ch From €365

Riverside Park Hotel

With spacious family rooms, a choice of dining options, and a leisure centre with children’s pool, the Riverside Park Hotel is a super choice to enjoy family breaks in Wexford.

The Riverside Park Hotel & Leisure Club is always a popular choice for family breaks in Ireland. The spacious family rooms and family-friendly facilities receive excellent reviews on TripAdvisor and it has continuously been a Travellers Choice winner. I visited a few years ago and was delighted when they got in touch and asked me to showcase their latest family breaks in Wexford this year.

Special offer at Riverside Park Hotel, Wexford

The Riverside Park Hotel has a super selection of family breaks and I love how much is included in their packages. Two-night stays are available during the summer from €341 for 2 adults and 1 child, €365 for 2 adults and 2 children and €476 for 2 adults and 3 children. These include a 10% saving which is only available until the 16th of January.

All of the following are included in their summer breaks:

  • 4-Course meal for all the family on the evening of your choice
  • Full Irish breakfast each morning
  • Family Activity Pass to one of Wexford’s family attractions – see more details below
  • Chocolate Treat for the Kids in your room on arrival
  • Full access to swimming pool and Leisure Club
Check prices here

Similar packages are available during Easter holidays from €369 for 2 adults and 1 child, €401 for 2 adults and 2 children and €543 for 2 adults and 3 children.

As well as great family deals, here are five great reasons to choose the Riverside Park Hotel for family breaks in Wexford.

1. The superior family rooms are cleverly designed

superior family rooms at the Riverside Park Hotel, Wexford.

I have seen many family rooms in hotels over the years, but I was really impressed with the clever design in the Riverside Park’s superior family rooms. Not only are these rooms very spacious – they can accommodate two adults and three children, but some have individual TV’s and headsets for children, that hang on a dividing wall in the centre of the room.

superior family rooms at Riverside Park Hotel

This means parents and children can enjoy their own choice of entertainment in comfort. As well as this great amenity, you can expect tea and coffee making facilities and complimentary mineral water in your room.

Superior rooms vary in design and layout – most have the dividing wall, but others are open plan with a separate tv in the ceiling. Standard rooms are also very well equipped and accommodate families of four, but do not have individual TV’s for children.

Some of the rooms can accommodate four children, and interconnecting rooms are also available – please call hotel directly to book these.

2. There are lots of family-friendly facilities, including a Kids Club

swimming pool at the Riverside Park Hotel

The hotel’s leisure centre boasts an indoor heated pool and a separate children’s pool, as well as a fully equipped gym and Rejuvenate Treatment Rooms – just incase you fancy a treatment while the kids are playing.

A kids club will be on every evening from 6pm – 10pm during summer holidays. Children of all ages are welcome, once they are potty trained. There is small charge of €6 for dinner and €6 for club but children are welcome to come to the club without dinner.

There is also a great playground beside the hotel with climbing frames, slides, swings, and a zip wire. Alex and her pal had a great time playing here last summer.

3. There are three dining options to choose from.

The Riverside Park Hotel has a wide selection of dining options to suit all the family. Choose the full bar menu or daily carvery at the Prom Bar, delicious steaks at the lively Alamo Steakhouse, or fine-dining at the elegant Moorings restaurant.

Prom Bar at the Riverside Park Hotel, Wexford.

All hotel restaurants use high quality locally grown produce, and kids menus are available in all three restaurants. Vegan and vegetarian options are also available. Children’s meals included in this offer are standard child-size portions but if, like me, you have a hungry teenager, you can order adult-size portions for an additional €12 extra per person.

A new addition to the hotel last year was the Riverside Coffee Hub which is located outside the hotel overlooking the river and beside the playground, with picnic tables to enjoy coffee, crepes, waffles to name a few of the home baked treats.

4. Location, location, location

The Riverside Park Hotel enjoys a picturesque location right on the banks of the River Slaney in Enniscorthy. There is a delightful 5km river walk that starts right outside the hotel, and it is only five minutes from the town centre. It is just 19km from the famous Curracloe beach, and within easy access of Wexford’s top attractions.

5. Wexford is full of top class family attractions

We enjoyed family breaks in Wexford on a few occasions – it is a super choice for a family holiday in Ireland. As well as six Blue Flag beaches, Wexford is home to Ireland’s only Seal Rescue Centre, the Secret Valley Wild Life Park, the oldest operating lighthouse in the world – Hook Lighthouse  and two of my own favourite family attractions, Wells House and Gardens and Irish National Heritage Park.

Wells House and Gardens is one of those rare treats that is equally appealing to young and old. The Gruffalo Walk, Enchanted Woodland Walk and Fairy Trail are superb, and there are interactive animal experiences (extra charge) with meerkats, racoons and tortoise.

The National Heritage Park is an interactive open-air museum. It shows how Irish people lived through the Stone Age, Bronze Age, when the Vikings came, right up to when the Normans came in 1169. There are Crannogs and Ringfort as well as the organised activities.

The National Heritage Park and Wells Gardens are two of the attractions that is included with your family break at Riverside Park Hotel.

Top Tips And Ideas For Family Camping in Ireland

family camping

Thinking of trying camping for the first time? Find out some top tips on camping in Ireland, and some campsite recommendations from the converted camper, Eibhlin.

I had numerous requests for recommendations on camping in Ireland, but unfortunately I was unable to help. I have tried glamping on a few occasions and loved it, but I believe to experience ‘real’ camping, you need to pitch your own tent – something I have yet to do with the kids. I decided I needed help.

Instagram

I asked on my Instagram stories if anyone with personal experience of camping in Ireland would like to write a post for me. I was absolutely delighted when I received a kind offer from Eibhlin, who has camped many times in Ireland with her family. These are Eibhlin’s top tips and recommendations for camping in Ireland with kids.

Hi everyone!

I’m Eibhlin and I live in Cavan with my husband and two daughters. By day, I’m a primary school teacher and by night I plan my future travels. I love reading travel books, blogs and posts, so I’m very excited about this opportunity to write a post for Sarah, whom I’ve followed for years.

When I started camping you could definitely call me a ‘reluctant camper’. My husband loved camping and had great memories from his times in tents at various festivals around the country – long before married life! I however, was more partial to a stay in a luxury hotel.

I ignored his hints at camping trips for years, with many valid reasons, but when the children were old enough I felt like I had ran out of excuses. So I decided to bite the bullet and give it a go. Maybe you could even call me ‘the converted camper’ now! I consider myself a novice still, definitely learning along the way with every new trip.

camping in Ireland, Achill

The main reason I decided to give camping a go was my two children. It was an experience I wanted them to have, and so far, they are really enjoying it, (they are aged 8 and 9). They love the freedom it gives them, and their camping highlight is running around in the dark with their torches. We have spent some time every summer for the last five years at various Irish campsites and I would like to share some hints and tips with anyone out there considering camping in Ireland for the first time.

family camping holidays in Ireland
Ruby and Rosie settling down for the night

Don’t get me wrong, I love travelling and I still fit in as many hotel trips and sun holidays as possible, but camping has now become another way to travel around Ireland and discover new places.

Camping is a very cost-effective way to holiday in Ireland. Most pitches for tents without electricity will vary between €25 – €45 per night. We usually stay for three nights and I feel this is the perfect length of stay for any novice campers. There is an element of hard work to camping, and it takes time to set up and pack away a tent. After all that effort, it’s nice to sit back and relax. I’m going to go mad this year and stay for four nights, but I’d say this will be my limit.

The most expensive camping trip will be your first trip, as you will need to purchase your tent and all your camping needs. It may be a good idea to borrow a tent for your first trip before you spend a lot of money on camping essentials – just in case it’s not you!

family tents for camping in Ireland

When you are camping in Ireland, you will see many groups of campers pitched up side by side, enjoying each other’s company. We usually take the opportunity for a family get-together on our camping trips. The children get to enjoy some wholesome outdoor fun with their cousins, and the adults get to enjoy a bottle of wine together at night.

All of the campsites I’ve visited have strict quiet-time policies at night, usually after 10 or 11pm, and for the most part this is adhered to. It is advisable to check TripAdvisor reviews before booking a campsite.

We usually split our time between the campsite and exploring the local area. We always cook breakfast at our tent, but we eat lunch/dinner out from time to time, to enjoy all the locality has to offer. I’m definitely a fan of combining a little bit of luxury into my camping trip!

Featherdown Loop Head Glamping

After many years of ‘winging it’ and throwing things into the boot of the car, last year we decided to compile a list of all our camping needs. Every year, we add a little bit more to our camping collection – this year, hopefully we will add a fire-pit. Making a camping equipment list is one of my first top tips – see more below.

My top tips for camping holidays in Ireland:

1. Make sure you have all the supplies you need.

Bringing tents and cooking utensils might seem obvious, but my ultimate camping equipment checklist has many items that you should bring too. Dressing gowns to go to the bathroom at night, flipflops for the shower, clothes pegs for hanging wet clothes, and a dustpan and brush for sweeping up sand or grass that gathers inside the tent – these are just some of the things that I have learned are needed after five years of camping in Ireland.

Read: The Ultimate Camping Equipment Checklist

2. Pack the car in advance.

camping holidays

I recommend packing the car as much as possible the day before you head off. You will be surprised how long it takes, and it will help everything run more smoothly on departure day!

3. Bring snacks and dinner for your first night

camping snacks

I usually cook a Bolognese at home before we leave and bring it with us for our first dinner at camp. I also make sandwiches and bring them – unpacking the car and putting up the tent is hard work, and it is nice to sit down and put on the kettle and have a decent snack at this stage.

4. Make your bed as comfortable as possible.

If you are a poor sleeper, it can be difficult to get a good night’s sleep camping. I bring my own pillows and bring an extra cosy throw/blanket to place on top of the airbed (like a mattress protector). If you find ear plugs and eye-masks useful, bring them too.

5. Think ahead – get your gear early

portable barbecue for camping

Buying camping gear in the winter is a good idea –  there is plenty of availability and prices may be reduced. There are some deals to be had on camping gear on second-hand websites like Adverts and Done Deal. My brother-in-law bought a good quality new tent, never used, last week for almost half price. You can also pick up deals on portable barbecues, and travel accessories for the car on MicksGarage.com

6. Relax and enjoy it.

You will not always have a tidy tent or clean children when you are camping, so my advice is just to relax, enjoy and go with the flow!

My favourite campsites in Ireland

1. Hidden Valley, Rathdrum, Co. Wicklow

Hidden Valley family camping holidays in Ireland
Cousins enjoying the water at Hidden Valley

I have been to Hidden Valley a few times and I actually had my first camping trip here. However, Hidden Valley is an extremely busy campsite during the summer months, and it can be a bit overwhelming until you get settled and find your bearings.

There are lots of activities onsite like crazy golf, pedalos, movie nights and much more – note extra charges may apply.  I found other campers very friendly here and really helpful to first time campers.

See more here

2. PureCamping, Querrin, Co. Clare

Purecamping Clare, family camping holidays in Ireland
Sarah’s kids enjoying the pizza oven at Purecamping

I know Sarah has spent time glamping here in this very special campsite, but they also take a small number of tents. This place is in complete contrast to Hidden Valley! It is in the middle of nowhere and all my children had to play with was a big tree and a small wooded area. But boy, did we all love it here!

I got the sense that people came to digitally detox from their busy lives. All the children gathered together and read books to each other at the tree, and played with their teddies – there was not a screen in sight!

Trea, the owner, runs weekly yoga classes, and there is a pizza oven and campfire at night which is great for meeting fellow campers. Looking out on the Atlantic Ocean, it is a pretty idyllic spot. Also. It was the perfect place to explore the Loop Head Peninsula.

See more here

3. Duncannon Holiday Park, Duncannon, Co. Wexford

Hook Head Lighthouse - Wexford
Hook Head Lighthouse, Wexford

This is a lovely quiet campsite across the road from the beach, and a perfect base to explore the Hook Head Peninsula. I think this campsite was the quietest at night that I’ve ever visited. The only downside is the walk to the toilets, showers and small children’s playground, is a little bit too far for my liking. You have to walk on a public road for a couple of metres and I had to accompany children on every trip for safety reasons.

4. Lough Key Forest Park

family camping holidays in Ireland - lough key forest park
Ruby loving Zipit in Lough Key

The campsite in Lough Key is my number one campsite! We visited in summer 2020 and it was one of the highlights of that tough year. I felt very safe in Lough Key as Covid guidelines were being strictly adhered to. The forest park itself is beautiful, and there is plenty to keep the children occupied such as, swimming in the lake, cycling the forest trails and Zipit high wires.

At the Visitor Centre, there was a coffee truck, ice-cream van and fresh pizza truck, which was a nice treat now and again. There are also places to visit close by – we spent a morning at the ‘Eagles Flying’ experience, which the children loved.

See more here

This year, we are booked into Nagles Campsite, Doolin, Co. Clare. We had to pay a deposit which is fully refundable in case any travel restrictions are in place. I have found them to be very friendly and helpful so far, and with great Tripadvisor reviews, maybe it might become my new number one spot.

Happy Camping Campers!

Kellys Resort Hotel & Spa, Wexford

Kelly's Resort Hotel, Wexford - luxury family hotels in Ireland

Perched on five miles of sandy beach, with award winning cuisine and a host of activities for children, it is no surprise that Kelly’s Resort Hotel is considered one of best luxury family hotels in Ireland. Although officially only a four star hotel, the service and facilities on site deserve five stars.

There is non stop entertainment for both adults and children, with kids clubs, mini-golf and a multi-award winning spa, all on site. If you can manage to tear yourself away from the hotel, (many don’t), there are lots of things to do in Wexford with kids.

The food is superb, with an extensive buffet (probably one of the best I’ve seen) and an a la carte restaurant, where parents are encouraged to dine alone, while the kids enjoy the buffet with their new found friends. There is complimentary child minding from 7-9pm which allows for a romantic dinner for two, a rarity for parents with young children.

We enjoyed a wonderful stay in the lodges at Waterford Castle a few years ago. They were designed by Paul Costello and are both stylish and spacious. As well as being able to enjoy the facilities of the Waterford Castle Hotel, our kids loved that we were on an island, and needed a boat to get to our hotel.

Despite no swimming pool on site, this unique 310-acre island resort deserves a place on this list of best family hotels in Ireland. There are many activities available including tennis and basketball courts, clay pigeon shooting, falconry and a junior golf camp that operates during the summer holidays.

There are also many nature walks throughout the island and plenty of opportunities to spot the resident deer and fairy doors.  Located in Waterford, a cycle on the Waterford Greenway will complete the ultimate family holiday experience.

We enjoyed a wonderful overnight stay at Druids Glen a few years go. Its close proximity to Dublin makes it an ideal choice for a short break for Dubliners, or for anyone looking to explore Wicklow’s highlights. Glendalough, Powerscourt and Clara Lara fun park are close by, as are the beaches of Brittas Bay and Curracloe.

Druids Glen caters extremely well for families. The standard rooms have two double beds and come with small bathrobes and slippers for children. Interconnecting rooms are also available if you want more privacy or have older children.

Fota Island Resort, Cork

fota island resort

One of our family favourites, we have visited Fota Island Resort on many occasions. We stayed in interconnecting hotel rooms on one occasion and one of the new three-bedroom Fushia lodges during a different visit. We loved both experiences but if your budget allows, I would opt for the lodges – they are superb. The children were able to play in the large back garden and we even had some resident rabbits join us each morning for breakfast.

The hotel has a large outdoor playground, an indoor pool and a kids playroom. There are also lots of kids clubs and golf camps for kids of all ages, during school holidays. The restaurant has supervised kids buffets followed by movie nights and quizzes, so parents can enjoy a date night if they wish.

One of the advantages of staying in Fota Island Resort is its close proximity to Fota Wildlife Park. My children loved seeing the kangaroos and lemurs roaming free, something they wouldn’t normally see in a traditional zoo. Fota Island Resort is also very close to Cobh where you can take the Titanic experience tour, or take the boat trip to spooky Spike Island, to explore the fortress that once held 2300 prisoners.

Mount Juliet Estate, Kilkenny

luxury family hotels in Ireland - mount juliet

Mount Juliet is one of Ireland’s finest hotels and is one of the most popular luxury family hotels in Ireland. We stayed here recently and had a fantastic experience. The grounds, the facilities and the choice of dining options are superb. You can choose to stay in the Manor House, as we did, or the more modern Hunters Yard, which I’m told caters extremely well for families, and offers great value too.

I was surprised at the extensive children’s activities available in Mount Juliet. There is a large playground with a zip line, as well as a fairy trail located in the gardens. Extensive kids clubs operate during school holidays, (extra charge applies), so parents can enjoy a round of golf or spa treatment while the kids avail of the supervised activities.

There are two kids clubs, one from age 5-12 and the other 12+. Activities range from archery, equestrian and meet the owls, to baking, golf, treasure hunts and arts and crafts. It is important to check activities in advance with Mount Juliet as some activities may change. There are also evening activities such as a talent show and movie nights, and children can dine with their new pals giving parents the opportunity to have a date night.

Lough Erne Resort, Fermanagh

Luxury Family Hotels in Northern Ireland - Lough Erne Resort

This luxury hotel is situated on a 600 acre peninsula overlooking two championship golf courses and lower Lough Erne lake. The lodges are a huge attraction, with conical roofs that look straight out a fairytale.

The food at the hotel is superb and there are are lots of options to choose from, with a fine dining restaurant, a Loughside Bar and Grill, as well as some tasty bar food. The large indoor pool allows for family swims from 8am – 11am  and 4.30pm-530pm. There is also an unsupervised play room, Ernies Den, with table football, air hockey and lots more.

There are some excellent walks around the hotel golf course with stunning views over the lakes. There are also more arduous walks close by, the famous Stairway to Heaven boardwalk at Culcaigh Mountain, being one of them. This is more suited to older children as it is a 15km round trip with 450 steps. A popular spot for social media enthusiasts, no doubt teenagers will enjoy taking selfies at the top!

Marble Arch Caves and Lough Navar Forest Park are also close by as well as Corralea activity centre. The town of Enniskillen is only 5 minutes drive from Lough Erne if you fancy a change of scene. Make sure you pop into Francos for some good food in family friendly surroundings.

However if your budget allows, upgrade to one of the executive suites which have a balcony and can easily accommodate a family of five.

You can choose to dine in the Lobby Bar or the elegant Seasons Restaurant, both of which have superb kids menus, that are very well priced. The Best Family Holidays With Teenagers

royal caribbean island perfect day at cococay

Family holidays with teenagers can go one of two ways – get it right and you will wonderful lifetime memories, get it wrong and you may wish you stayed at home…

Choosing the right holidays with teenagers can be tricky. Depending on their age, they might be going through mood swings, tantrums, and will probably have their phones surgically attached to their fingers 24/7. However, maybe they have outgrown that phase and have finished school, in which case they will want to go on holidays with their friends… Regardless of age, the number of times where you will all be holidaying together is diminishing year by year. Make sure these remaining family holidays are good ones.

Instagram

There are a few things to consider when booking family holidays with teenagers. I suggested chatting to them first to see what type of holidays they are interested in. Depending on their age you may find they just want to flake out at a pool with good WiFi or perhaps a gym onsite is a necessity. However, if your budget allows, maybe this the time to tick off some holiday destinations off your bucket list. I have listed some of my recommendations for holidays with teenagers below, with types to suit all tastes and budgets. Hopefully there will be one here to suit you and your family.

Foolproof destinations that teenagers will love

I’m sure you don’t need me to tell you that not all teenagers are the same. Some don’t like sand, others are fussy eaters, but most find sightseeing a chore. However, there are a few foolproof destinations that tick all boxes for family holidays with teenagers.

Orlando is probably an obvious choice, where else can you find over 20 theme parks in one place? Most parks have rides that are suited to teens as well as younger kids, and even if you have never read a Harry Potter book or seen any of the movies, you would need to be made of stone to be unimpressed with the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios.

best holidays with teenagers - orlando

Most hotels in Orlando have swimming pools, but it is just over an hour’s drive to Daytona Beach if you fancy a beach day. The Kennedy Space Centre is also only an hour’s drive from Orlando – that is a great experience for all the family. Orlando is also great for shopping and fussy eaters don’t need to worry, there are food courts everywhere!

Dubai is another superb holiday destination for families. Dubai has year round sunshine, stunning beaches and so much to see and do for all the family. My only recommendation would be to try avoid the summer months, as temperatures can get over 40 degrees.

You can also trying skiing in the Mall of the Emirates, go to the top of the world’s largest building the Burj Khalifa, but my favourite family experience in Dubai was the desert safari – whatever you do don’t miss it!

Sun holidays with teenagers

The annual summer family holiday to the sun may not have the same appeal to teenagers as it did when they were younger. However, there are a few things that should keep teenagers happy on sun holidays. WiFi is vital, especially if you are away for a week or two – you may get away with limited browsing on a city break, but you won’t on a typical sun holiday.  Make sure the hotel or apartment you are staying in has good Wifi, preferably free. Check reviews from previous guests on Tripadvisor, and remember having WiFi and having good WiFi are two different things….

holidays with teenagers with waterparks

As well as WiFi, having a decent swimming pool is important for holidays with teenagers. A pool with waterslides is ideal and can keep teenagers entertained for hours. If this is not available to you, try to choose a property close to a beach with good water sports. Remember older teens may need a gym.

If your teenager is happy to mix with other teens, a teen club can be ideal. Make sure it caters for teenagers only, they will not want to mix with 10 year olds in a regular kids club. Additional activities such as a football academy, DJ lessons or an aerial adventure course are a bonus. TUI’s Splashworld resorts have free access to a waterpark (onsite or close by) throughout your stay, while their Holiday Villages have a host of activities for kids of all ages.

Activity based beach holidays with teenagers

While waterparks and teen clubs might be ideal for some teenagers, specialist activity based holidays are a great choice for active teenagers. Club Med and Mark Warner holidays have a host of sports facilities including sailing, surf lessons and even scuba diving. You will also find some creative activities such as film design and mixing beats. They are all-inclusive too, so you don’t need to worry about your teenager looking for hand-outs for every activity, as most are included in the cost.

If you have a budding tennis star or soccer player in the family, Sani Resort in Greece is a super choice. Sani Resort doesn’t just have tennis courts and football courts. Sani has a tennis academy in collaboration with Rafa Nadal Tennis Centre, and a UEFA-approved soccer pitch with football coaching sessions, in association with Chelsea Football Club. Children can enjoy a football camp with qualified coaches in various camps ranging from age four to sixteen years, and a Chelsea FC Foundation kit is given to all attendees.

Sani Resort also has a KTM bike club, using the Fat Bike and Go-Pro cameras, and adventure park with high ropes and zip lines, and a PADI Scuba Diving Centre offering many diving opportunities, including shipwreck diving. Sani Resort is expensive, but it is one of the best family resorts in the world.

City Breaks with teenagers

City breaks can provide great family holidays with teenagers, but it is important to choose your destination wisely. American cities like New York, or Washington will provide the wow factor, but Barcelona, Paris and Rome are great choices too. Iconic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and the Colosseum are sure to impress, and there are plenty of Instagram worthy locations in most major cities.

Try to plan one day to do something other than sightseeing. The RER train will get you from the centre of Paris to Disneyland Paris in 90 minutes (there are plenty of rides for teenagers too), and Barcelona is only an hour from PortAventura and Ferrari Land. You could also try to take in a sporting event while you are there, a trip to the Nou Camp in Barcelona is ideal if travelling with boys.

Skiing holidays with teenagers

A skiing holiday is regarded as one of the best family holidays with teenagers. I skied with my family for the first time last Christmas and the kids loved it. It is an expensive holiday, but one that I believe is worth it. Teenagers will be active all day and won’t have the time or inclination to be checking their phone 24/7.

They will also have the opportunity to try snowboarding and maybe even tobogganing, depending on ski resort you choose. Many secondary schools organise a ski holiday for their students, so going skiing before this happens will prepare them for the trip, and once they try skiing, they will be chomping at the bit to get back on the slopes.

Road trips with teenagers

I am a big fan of road trips. I love seeing lots of new places on one trip – and most teenagers to do. The key is to make sure you don’t have too many long journeys in the car, and to spend at least two nights in each place. No one wants to arrive in a hotel at 5pm and leave at 9am the following day – it’s exhausting and you don’t get to see the place properly.

Give yourself plenty of time to explore each stop, don’t plan to much on the one road trip, and make sure you have the right tech (we use a mediashare) that will enable to the kids to watch movies while you drive.

We travelled from San Francisco to San Diego over 17 days and it was a fantastic family experience. We cycled across the Gold Gate Bridge, visited Alcatraz, spent a day in Universal Studios, visited the California Science Centre and also managed to include some beach time.

Another one of my favourite road trips was driving from Cape Town to Amakhala Game Reserve in South Africa. South Africa was one of our favourite family holidays and one that I am sure any teenager would love. I can’t wait to drive from Seattle to Vancouver and stop off in some of Canada’s amazing National Parks – that is a road trip that is firmly on my bucket list.

Bucket list adventures that teenagers will love

When your teenager finishes school, you may find family holidays harder to organise. Why not make your teenager an offer they can’t refuse and scratch one off your own bucket list at the same time? The South Africa and California road trips (above) are bucket list adventures too, but for once in a lifetime experiences, think about far away destinations like Australia or the Galapagos Islands, visit Giraffe Manor in Kenya, go in search of the Gorillas in Uganda, or catch the sunrise over Machu Picchu. National Geographic Journeys with G Adventures have some incredible family itineraries if you have younger kids travelling with you too.

Cruise holidays with teenagers

Cruises may not be in huge demand at the moment, but trust me when normality resumes, cruises are one of the bests family holidays with teenagers. You don’t have to worry about them wandering off as everything is on board the cruise ship – in fact many new ships offer wrist bands so you can track where your kids are at all times.

Water parks are practically the norm on new ships now, but some cruise lines have gone a step further. I rode around a race-track on Norwegian Encore, and their virtual reality gaming area was like nothing I had ever seen at sea – or on land for that matter. Royal Caribbean have massive water slides, rock climbing walls, surf simulators, zip lines and even ski diving on some ships, and you can ride a Formula 1 simulator on some of MSC’s cruise ships.

best cruise holidays with teenagers

Most have separate teen zones where teens can hang out until late, without having to watch theatre shows with their parents. With all meals included and some restaurants open 24/7, they can eat and drink when they like. And all of this is just what is onboard cruise ships – you will also visit some amazing destinations too, even private islands with waterparks and hot air balloon rides.

Top Ten City Breaks For Families

Family Dubrovnik_opt

Check out my top ten city breaks for families, with plenty of activities for both adults and kids to enjoy.

City breaks for families should be embraced. Describing ancient Rome to your kids is so much easier when you are inside the Colosseum, Barcelona no longer becomes just a football club, and tapas become something they enjoy eating. Talk about World War Two or the Cold War at home and you will probably be ignored – however, at Checkpoint Charlie, its a different story.

Top ten city breaks for families

City breaks are the best way for kids to understand different cultures, taste new foods and enjoy some quality family time. You will be together 24/7 without kids clubs, pool games and only each other to talk to. Sitting down for a nice meal at the end of a days sightseeing, and listening to your kids describing the highlights of their day is very rewarding.

Instagram

However, there are only so many museums kids can take. You do need to make sure there are some ‘cool’ things for them to see too. I have some tips for taking kids on city breaks  which you might find useful, and in my list below, you will find my top ten city breaks for families.

Berlin

Top ten city breaks for families

There is so much to see and do in Berlin, you could easily spend a week here. The DDR museum is a good choice for families as it is an interactive museum where kids are encouraged to touch things and interact, while Checkpoint Charlie will be popular with teenagers, they can even get their photo taken with armed guards!

The National History Museum has three huge dinosaur skeletons, including the largest skeleton in the world, and there are numerous technology and science museums that are very child friendly. There is also a Lego Discovery Centre, a fantastic Zoo, and if travelling in the Summer, the outdoor waterpark at Friedrichstein is worth a visit.

Lisbon

family city breaks in Lisbon

I love Lisbon and we had a super time there recently. It is so easily accessible, with Aer Lingus, Ryanair and TAP Air Portugal all offering daily flights from Ireland. I love that the city is by the sea, especially as it tends to have warm weather, but its great to have the choice of a beach day as well as exploring its pretty old town.

Take a Tuk Tuk or Tram tour to see most of the highlights, and make sure you visit Europe’s largest Aquarium – the kids will love it.

Take the train to nearby Sintra. The fairytale-like Pena Palace is like a Disney Castle, and if time allows visit Quinta de Regaleira too. It is full of dungeons and dragons – my kids thought they were in Hogwarts and loved it.

London

City Breaks for families - London

Right on our doorstep, London is a great city for a family break. Check out the London Dungeon and Tower Bridge, visit the Harry Potter Experience, or spend a day in Legoland. And if your kids are like mine, they will love seeing Big Ben and taking a spin on the London Eye.

Los Angeles

city breaks for families

So this might seem like a long way to go for a city break, but with so many direct flights from Dublin airport, it is more attainable now than ever. Kids will love seeing Hollywood boulevard, the stars on the sidewalk, as well as their favourite characters dressed up.

It is also home to Universal Studios, Disneyland California and the California Science Centre. We combined a stay in Los Angeles with a great California road trip,  it was one of our favourite family holidays.

Read: Our California road trip.

Verona

 ten city breaks for families

The gateway to Lake Garda, Verona is ideal for city breaks for families. In Verona you can’t miss the amazing amphitheatre and Juliet’s balcony, while kids will love trying water sports on the lake.

Like most cities in Italy, kids will receive a warm welcome in the Italian bars and restaurants, and the city has a ‘holiday resort’ feel to it. For a great day out, take a trip to the nearby theme park, Gardaland and Peppa Pig Land. Packed with rollercoasters, water rides and shows, it is a great day out for all the family.

Paris

DIsneyland Paris at Christmas time - great city break for families

Disneyland Paris is a reason in itself to warrant an inclusion on this list of best city breaks for families. We visited Disneyland Paris at Christmastime and it was magical. However, there are also plenty of other things that kids will love, particularly the Eiffel Tower, and a cruise on the Seine.

A Parisian food tour is a great way to see the city on foot and gives kids something to look forward to, as you stop in various chocolate and pastry shops along the way.

Read My Paris travel guide – top things to do and where to stay in Paris

Barcelona

best city breaks for families - barcelona is close to portaventura

Where else will you find a beach, one of the biggest football clubs in the world, Europe’s largest theme park, PortAventura, and some of Spain’s best tapas bars? Barcelona definitely ticks all boxes for a family city break. It can get very crowded in July and August so my advice is go off peak, and don’t miss a day out in PortAventura.

Older kids will want to shop, younger kids will think they are in the movies, and as for adults, well you will just be happy to be in New York! Climb to the Top of the Rock, go ice skating in Central Park, take a tour of the USS Intrepid aircraft carrier, and pay a visit to the massive Lego Store at the Rockefeller Centre. They are just a small sample of what families will enjoy in New York.

TOP TIP: If you plan on shopping and are bringing a relatively empty suitcase, pack a cheap scooter from your local toy shop. Kids will love to scoot around the city and if you have to leave it there, so be it!

Dubai

things to do with kids in Dubai

Waterparks galore, Palm Island, aquariums, desert safaris, and even skiing – there is nothing you can’t do in Dubai. They have just opened the world’s largest indoor theme park and it is a whopping 1.5 million square feet! Being completely enclosed, it will offer a welcome relief from the hot temperatures. Expect a Dinosaur adventure zone, MARVEL superhero zone with thrilling rides, live shows, movies and lots more.

Of course in Dubai, kids will love to spend time on some of the world’s best beaches. We had a fabulous few days in Dubai with the kids, it is certainly one of my top recommendations for city breaks for families.

Copenhagen

Tom ten city breaks for families

Copenhagen is a great city break during the winter time, particularly at Halloween or Christmas. Tivoli Gardens, the world’s oldest theme park is home to roller-coasters, family rides, an aquarium, restaurants and has regular fire work displays. It closes down for weeks before Halloween and Christmas to prepare for the festivities and is decorated with 120,000 lights. It is magical experience for adults and kids.

Family Break in Copenhagen for New Year, 30th December, 3 Nights, €1209

christmas-carousel-shutterstock-compressor

Enjoy a post Christmas market break in Copenhagen. Experience the magic of Tivoli Gardens as it is transformed into a winter wonderland.

Open since 1843, Tivoli Gardens is one of the world’s oldest amusement parks. Over one million people descend on Tivoli at Christmas time, to experience one of Europe’s best Christmas markets. It is lit up with 500,000 fairy lights and has Christmas decorations at every corner. Tivoli Gardens is now open from the 16th of November to the 5th of January, making a Christmas market break in Copenhagen a great choice for all the family, either before or after Christmas.

There are theme park rides in Tivoli Gardens throughout the year, but at Christmas time there are added light shows, market stalls, and top class concerts. It is no doubt one of the best places to soak up the Christmas atmosphere.

Of course Copenhagen offers so much more than Tivoli Gardens. Enjoy some of the excellent cuisine that Copenhagen is renowned for, or shop along the longest pedestrianised shopping street in Europe.

No visit to Copenhagen would be complete without visiting The Little Mermaid. Personally, I wasn’t overly impressed by her, but the kids should enjoy the story behind it. When in Rome and all that…

Something that does live up to the hype are the pretty streets of Nyhavn. The multicoloured houses are an Instagrammers paradise. I loved pottering in and out of the numerous coffee shops, restaurants and souvenir shops.
