With Valentines Day just around the corner, why not give the gift of an overnight escape? The 5-Star Lough Erne Resort in Fermanagh is just €79 per person including breakfast on the 20th of February or on Mother’s Day, 19th of March.

We stayed in Lough Erne resort a few years ago and loved it. It’s stunning location on a 600-acre peninsula was just one of the reasons, the top quality food and service were others. It offers a host of activities including two Championship Golf Courses and a unique Thai inspired Spa.

Best early booking offer: A weekend on the Portofino Coast

travel deals to Portofino from Ireland

Spend a weekend on the Italian Riviera this year and visit the exclusive resorts of Portofino and the hill top towns of the Cinque Terre. The newly announced summer flights to Genoa from Dublin offer superb value for a weekend break.

I found flights from €107 return in September and October, departing early Friday morning and returning late Monday night so you will have four days to explore this stunning coastline. However, if time and budget allows, I suggest stay longer!

I visited Portofino and the nearby town of Santa Margherita many years ago, and I think you would want to be made of stone if they didn’t impress you! Hotel prices are less expensive in Santa Margherita, although it is only five minutes by taxi into Portofino.

Weekend in Rome, 21st January, Flights & 4 Star Hotel, 3 Nights, €199!

Sarah at the Colosseum, Rome (1)

A weekend in Rome is a great idea at any time of year. No matter how many times you visit you can’t help but marvel at its beauty.

You would want to be made of stone if Rome did not impress you. There are ancient wonders at every corner – The Colosseum, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, I could go on and on. You could spend a week here and not see everything, but a weekend in Rome should allow you to see many of the highlights and soak up the atmosphere of this great city.

Rome is a walkable city and many of the top attractions are close together, however, it is important that you pre-book entrance tickets to the top attractions in advance. I also recommend pre booking a city tour on your first day to get your bearings – the Vespa tour or golf cart tour are just some of my favourites.

Winter or Spring is a great time to book a weekend in Rome  – temperatures are ideal for sightseeing and there are less crowds around – airfares and hotel prices are cheaper too! Aer Lingus and Ryanair fly twice daily on most days from Dublin airport, and there is a twice weekly flight from Cork airport with Ryanair.

I found return flights from Dublin for €59 from Dublin and €120 from Cork, departing Saturday the 21st of January for three nights. A three-night stay at the 4-star Hotel Principessa Isabella is only €140 per person including breakfast – so you can enjoy a weekend in Rome for less than €200 per person!

There are many other hotel choices to choose from. The popular Hotel Capo d´África – Colosseo is €202 per person for a three night stay, or the 5-star NH Collection Palazzo Cinquecento is €335. Check out some of my recommendations on where to stay in Rome here:

5-Star Weekend In Porto, Flights & Hotel, 3 Nights, 5th February, €261!

Porto view

Porto is one of the oldest cities in Europe and is a wonder to explore. Enjoy a 5-star weekend in Porto over St Brigid’s weekend for just €263 per person.

We spent a weekend in Porto a few years ago and loved it. Porto is a compact city with a medieval old town and colourful streets – it is a pleasure to explore. The Ribeira district is a Unesco World Heritage site and is full of local wine bars, restaurants and vibrant buildings close to the waterfront.

Enjoy a glass of wine or a meal by the river and soak up the atmosphere, for a fraction of what you would pay at home. In fact Porto of late has become one of Europe’s top food destinations.

You wont find many celebrity restaurants here, but lots of local eateries serving traditional Portuguese food, at rock bottom prices. Renowned as the birthplace of Port, there are also numerous port houses offering tastings and tours.

There are plenty of good places to go at night time too, with bands playing in various venues across the city.

There has never been a better time to visit Tuscany – the airfares to Pisa from Dublin and Cork airport are great value this summer. 30 City Break Destinations in Europe for 2023

Split, Croatia

With new routes announced from many Irish airports, as well as some old favourites, I have hand-picked some of the best city break destinations for 2023.

I’m a big fan of city breaks. I love how much you can discover in a new city such a short space of time. However, if you’re not one for pounding the pavements and covering an entire city on foot, settling down with a coffee and people watching in a town square can be just as enjoyable. We are fortunate to have many of Europe’s top city break destinations available from a variety of Irish airports this year. I have picked 30 to inspire your next break away.

This Italian gem might be an unknown quantity for some of you, but believe me it needs to be on your radar. Some may have seen it in the opening scene of the new James Bond movie – No Time To Die, but it is even more impressive in person.

Located close to Bari in the heel of Italy, it is one of the most fascinating cities I have visited. The old town or ‘Sassi’ is full of boutique hotels, Airbnb’s and restaurants, built inside ancient caves.

It has a remarkable rags to riches story – to go from being Italy’s poorest city to the European Capital of Culture for 2019 is quite a feat. Located just 50 minutes from Bari Airport, which is serviced from Dublin with Ryanair, it is easily accesible. I have no doubt Matera will be one of the top city break destinations for 2023.

TOP TIP:  If time allows why not stay longer and explore Puglia? Aer Lingus and Ryanair have announced a new service to Brindisi in the south of Puglia. If you fly into Bari ( Ryanair) and return from Brindisi you can maximise your time exploring one of Italy’s best kept secrets!

2. Copenhagen – Denmark

Sarah Slattery, The Travel Expert, takes a cycling tour of Copenhagen

I am always surprised by the amount of people who haven’t visited Copenhagen, and with Ryanair, SAS and Norwegian all flying to Copenhagen from Ireland, the competition is rife for cheap flights!

Copenhagen’s compact size makes it easy to navigate, and it is perfect for a short city break. The colourful Nyhavn canal is sure to impress you, as will Copenhagen’s great food scene. Tivoli Gardens is a beautiful year-round attraction that children will love, making Copenhagen one of the most popular city breaks for families.

3. Pisa, Tuscany – Italy

weekend break in Tuscany

While Pisa is not one of my favourite city break destinations, it is superbly located to explore the rolling hills of Tuscany – one of my favourite places to visit. Pisa is served from Dublin and Cork airports this summer, and airfares are great value.

There is a bus service to Florence following a Ryanair flight, but if you want to explore some of Tuscany’s magnificent towns and villages, I recommend hiring a car. San Gimignano is one of Italy’s most beautiful walled towns and is located just over an hour from Pisa.

There are many sights to see in Tuscany, but make sure you save time to visit the Leaning Tower of Pisa. It is located close to the airport so it is best seen when you arrive, or before you leave to fly home.

Up until a few years ago you had to book a package holiday for one or two weeks if you wanted to visit the Greek Islands. We are so fortunate now to have a selection of Greek islands to choose from, with most flights operating two or three times per week.

Corfu is served from Dublin and Shannon airports, while Santorini, Crete, Rhodes and Kos are served from Dublin airport. There are also flights to Thessaloniki and Athens on the Greek mainland from Dublin airport.

Corfu, Kos and Rhodes Town are ideal city break destinations, they both offer pretty old towns with gorgeous sea views.

Rhodes Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage City and the Colossus of Rhodes is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Edinburgh is a super choice for a city break, and it is accessible from Cork, Shannon, Dublin and Ireland West airports. It’s medieval old town and stunning castle are a pleasure to explore.

Edinburgh is easy to navigate and is one of those cities that you can’t help but love. Don’t miss Arthur’s Seat in Holyrood Park for the best views, and make sure to visit the pubs on Rose Street for the ultimate Edinburgh experience.

Lisbon is one Europe’s top city break destinations, and after my recent visit I now know why. It has a beautiful old town, with pastel-coloured buildings with terracotta rooftops as far as the eye can see.

Lisbon is best explored on foot, but if you don’t fancy walking, there are delightful old trams and tuk tuks available to help you enjoy this great city.

Rome is always a great choice for a city break. There are ancient wonders at every corner, amazing shopping on the Via del Corso, and let’s not forget the food. We visited recently and fell in love with Rome all over again. The home of pizza, pasta and gelato, Rome is a feast for the senses.

Rome is served from Dublin with Aer Lingus and Ryanair, and from Cork airport with Ryanair.

13. Split – Croatia

Split, one of the best city break destinations for 2022

I am a massive lover of Croatia. I have visited many times, but have yet to visit the seaside city of Split, which is actually the second largest city in Croatia.

The old town is home to numerous historical sites, including the UNESCO World Heritage Site – Diocletian Palace, and there is a sandy beach within walking distance if you fancy a swim or some dining options with sea views.

Aer Lingus and Ryanair fly to Split from Dublin airport.

Saint-Emilion

Bordeaux is France’s sixth largest city and boasts a massive World Heritage site, stunning architecture as well as being one of France’s top gastronomic and wine capitals.

You could easily spend a few days here and not leave the city. However, it would be a shame not to explore the picturesque villages and charming Châteaux on the Bordeaux wine trail, Saint-Emilion in particular is a little piece of heaven.

Bordeaux can be reached from Dublin and Cork airports or you could choose to take the ferry and bring home some wine!

Malaga is one of our most popular destinations, but it is mostly used as a gateway to the Costa del Sol. I finally got around to staying in Malaga City recently and couldn’t believe what I had been missing!  Its a fabulous city packed with a historical centre, lots of sights to see, and some great restaurants!

It is the birthplace of Pablo Picasso who is celebrating his 50th anniversary this year so there will be lots of cultural events taking place throughout the year. It is also on the coast, so if you want to mix some beach time on your city break – look no further.

The capital of Andalucia is having a moment. The newly announced flights from Cork were a welcome surprise, and compliment the existing flights from Dublin.

As well as mouth watering tapas and wonderful wine, you can expect to a medieval centre that is packed with an eclectic mix of architecture, where many palaces have been converted to luxury hotels.

The world’s largest cathedral is in Seville, and houses Christopher Columbus’ tomb, and there are many more sights to see here. Seville will be hot during the summer months, so it is probably best avoided during July or August.

With over 300 days of sunshine each year, Valletta is a popular city break destination all year round. There are direct flights from Dublin and Shannon and it is ideal for a city break or as a summer holiday destination.

Valletta is a small city, so you can see most of the highlights over a short break. I like that it is not overrun with large hotel chains, and has plenty of chic boutique hotels within the city walls. You will also discover local shops, bars and restaurants, as well as a lively atmosphere.

I have a choice of accommodation  to choose from. Stay in a two-bedroom apartment at the popular Pierre & Vacances Salou, or stay at the PortAventura Hotel, where you can walk in and out of the park as many times as you like. You can also enjoy a complimentary family pass to Ferrari Land, which is located nearby.

Flights are available from Dublin, Cork and Shannon – see more in this post:

Palma ticks all boxes if you are looking for short breaks from Dublin, Cork or Shannon. Flights also operate weekly from Ireland West. Don’t miss a trip to Palma’s cathedral, and a stroll along the marina is a must in the evenings. Palma is also a great choice for a shopping break, and is an ideal launchpad to explore the rest of the island.

There are many different resorts to choose from, but I found a superb deal in the 5-star CM Mallorca Palace. Price for flights and a three night stay is just €259 over Easter weekend. This luxury beachfront hotel is located about an hour from Palma, however the reviews are so good, you may not want to leave!

I loved our trip to Porto and would highly recommend Porto for a city break. As well as being home to a UNESCO World Heritage site, it is packed with colourful buildings, delightful streets, and has a great food and wine scene.

There are flights from Dublin and Shannon for Easter holidays. Price for return flights the 8th of April are only €132 from Dublin, or €80 from Shannon on the 9th of April.

Enjoy a three-night stay at the highly rated 4-star Yotel Porto for just €179 per person. Highly rated on TripAdvisor, this is one of the best value breaks over Easter.

According to Lonely Planet, Beziers is Languedoc’s most underrated city. It has a historical centre that is built on a hilltop – I’m liking the sound of it already! It’s small size will suit those looking for new city break destinations, as well as holidaymakers who want to explore the nearby towns of Carcassonne and Montpelier, and the beach resorts on the Languedoc coast.

After many years of visiting the beach resorts on the Costa del Sol, I finally got around to enjoying a Malaga city break and can’t believe what I have been missing for the last 30 years! Despite being the six largest city in Spain, Malaga feels more like a vibrant town. Lisbon is one Europe’s top city break destinations, and after my recent visit I now know why! It has a beautiful old town, with pastel-coloured buildings with terracotta rooftops as far as the eye can see.

Sweden is a country that is on my own wish list, and this super deal to Sweden’s second city is a great introduction. With return airfares from €118 from Dublin, this must be one of the best value short breaks over Easter weekend.

Despite its seaside location, Gothenburg is known as the Green City. It has an abundance of green spaces, and its work on sustainability has made it one of Europe’s leading cities in this field. Gothenburg is an inviting city renowned for its friendly seaside charm, as well as its great food and craft beer scene. Thrill seekers might also like to try the many rides and rollercoasters at Scandinavia’s largest theme park – Liseberg.
