Ten Autumn / Winter Breaks To Use With Aer Lingus Vouchers

autumn winter breaks

Have you have an Aer Lingus voucher that you want to use? If you want to have something to look forward to, one of these autumn / winter breaks might do the trick.

I know many of you have Aer Lingus vouchers and would love to plan some autumn or winter breaks – well fortunately you can! Aer Lingus offer flexible booking options, so if you wish to book something now, and travel restrictions are still in place later in the year, you can change your booking free of charge. Some fare types are also eligible for refund vouchers – see more here:

I advise  you to book hotels or apartments with free cancellation, and for that reason I have priced all of accommodation below with refundable rates, in fact most hotels allow you to book now and pay later – so you don’t even need to pay a deposit.

All hotels and apartments are highly rated on Tripadvisor with great reviews from previous guests. If the dates I have chosen don’t suit you, please click on the links below and edit the search to suit your requirements.

Note, these winter breaks contain affiliate links, where I receive a small commission if a booking is made, but at no additional cost to you.

1. A week in Lanzarote, 18th November, €298pp

autumn winter breaks

Lanzarote is a great choice for a winter week away. The year round sunshine and long sandy beaches have been attracting Irish visitors for many years. It’s not all about sun and sand though, there is plenty of good sightseeing, as well as some excellent duty free shopping.

The old town of Puerto del Carmen has some fantastic restaurants. Having a drink at one of the waterfront cafes as the sun sets over the harbour is a lovely way to end your day.

I found a great Lanzarote deal staying in the Tisalaya apartments in Puerto del Carmen. Highly rated on TripAdvisor, they are an ideal choice to explore all that Lanzarote has to offer. Fly from Dublin on the 18th of October and enjoy a seven night stay for only €297 per person.

2. New Year Skiing in Austria, 27th December, 2 adults & 2 children, €1871

I have always loved skiing and was delighted to bring my kids skiing for the first time last year. It is not a cheap holiday by any means, but if you have been cooped up in the house for the last year, can you think of anything better than spending the New Year in the Alps?

I found the highly rated apartments Hechenberger available on Vrbo – Expedia’s vacation rentals company. The apartment was awarded with 4 Edelweiss, (the highest categorisation that private rentals can achieve in Austria), and is located close to the town centre and 1000 metres from the nearest ski lift.

Fly from Dublin on the 27th of December and enjoy a seven night stay in the Hechenberger apartments for less than €2000. I recommend booking the more expensive ‘Plus’ fare because it includes 20kg checked baggage, seat selection and priority boarding, as well as being eligible for a voucher if you need to cancel your booking.

3. A spa break in the Algarve, 12th October from €240pp

autumn winter breaks in the algarve

With a stunning coastline boasting some of Europe’s best beaches, its not surprising that the Algarve is one of our most popular holiday destinations. There are many resorts to choose from, from the lively resort of Albufeira to the picturesque town of Carvoeiro, and I found great deals in both.

The Sol Aqua is located just ten minutes walk from the old town of Albufeira and boasts an indoor and outdoor pool, and wellness centre. If you are looking for something more luxurious, the 5-star Vale d’Oliveiras Quinta Resort & Spa is an excellent choice. Rated number 1 on Tripadvisor with excellent reviews.

Located just five minutes from Carvoeiro, you can choose to enjoy its fine restaurants, or dine on site in the hotel’s Olive Tree Restaurant, which offers panoramic views over the gardens and pool. Breakfast is also included in this great deal.

4. Christmas Shopping in New York, 4th December, 4 nights, €780!

christmas shopping in new york

I love visiting New York, regardless of the time of year, but there is something magical about visiting at Christmas time. Parting with your hard-earned cash on Christmas presents is also a lot easier when you are doing it in New York – and who knows, you might pick up some bargains for yourself too. I have posts on shopping in New York and things to do in New York so if you need any more inspiration be sure to check them out.

The Christmas tree at Rockefeller Centre is usually illuminated at the beginning of December. With this in mind I have chosen flights with Aer Lingus to depart on the 4th of December and a four-night stay in the centrally located Shelburne Hotel & Suites by Affinia.

Priced at just €780 including 23kg checked baggage based on 2 sharing or even less if three or four share, this is superb value. When you click on the link below you will notice the saver airfare is €100 less but I recommend booking the ‘Smart’ fare because it includes 23kg checked baggage, seat selection and complimentary meal, as well as being eligible for a voucher if you need to cancel your booking.

6. Disneyland Paris with Park Tickets, 27th October, 3 Nights, 2 adults & 2 children, €2099

Halloween is a great time to visit Disneyland Paris. The parks are transformed for their annual Halloween festival. Scary attractions like Phantom Manor and Tower of Terror have some spooky surprises in store, while Main Street U.S.A is full of pumpkins, flickering lights and creepy sounds.

The impressive Illuminations Show at Sleeping Beauty’s Castle takes on a Halloween theme, and will surely leave you feeling bewitched.  Read my dedicated blog post on this offer with more information.

7.  October bank holiday weekend in Croatia, 5-star hotel, 3 nights, €499

autumn winter breaks in croatia

If you are looking for a luxury weekend away in beautiful surroundings, look no further than this. The 5-star Hotel Croatia is located in the pretty resort of Cavtat, just a ferry ride away from the hustle and bustle of Dubrovnik. I stayed here a few years ago and loved it. Cavtat is located close to the airport too, so it is a great option for a weekend break.

Dubrovnik is very busy during the day time, but you can catch the ferry from Cavtat early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the crowds have dissipated.

Cavtat is also located close to the border of Montenegro. We visited the medieval town of Kotor during our stay. Normally I would highly recommend you do the same, but the Hotel Croatia is a beautiful hotel and offers stunning sea views from the terrace, so you may find it difficult to leave….

8. Christmas market break in Berlin, 3rd December, 3-nights, €192pp

Berlin Christmas Market breaks.

Believe it or not, Berlin has over 50 different Christmas markets to choose from. The Winter World at Potsdamer Platz offers ice skating and tobogganing, while the traditional Christmas Markets at Alexanderplatz and Charlottenburg house wooden stalls and beer houses. And lets not forget the market in Spandau that has rock concerts every Friday!

Of course with so many other sights to see and some great nightlife, Berlin is a great city to visit at anytime. I found a super deal in the centrally located Titanic Comfort Berlin Mitte hotel. This receives great reviews on TripAdvisor and is a great choice for a festive break.

9. Winter week in Gran Canaria, 20th January, Gloria Palace Amadores, €678pp

winter breaks in the canary islands.

Perched on a cliff with stunning views of the sea, and only 300 meters from the beach, it is not surprising why the Gloria Palace Amadores Hotel and Thalasso is very popular with Irish holidaymakers.

Situated between Puerto Rico and Mogan, this hotel offers the best of both worlds – a relaxing holiday with the option to travel to nearby resorts if you fancy a livelier scene. Renowned for it’s high quality cuisine, attentive staff and for having one of Europe’s top thalassotherapy centres, can you think of a better way to beat the January blues?

10. New Year in Washington, 3 Nights, 30th December €634

Washington break for New Year's Eve.

Washington is one of my favourite American cities. You don’t have to be a lover of politics to be impressed with Washington’s monuments and memorials, and I dare you not to be a little star struck when you see The White House for the first time. Washington has some great shopping options too, as well as vibrant nightlife and a lively atmosphere.

I found a great deal staying in the university neighbourhood of Georgetown. The Hyatt Place receives excellent reviews on TripAdvisor and it is close to Washingtons most popular landmarks. I have priced this with the Aer Lingus ‘Smart’ fare which includes 23kg checked baggage, a complimentary meal on board and is also eligible for a voucher if you need to cancel your trip.

Lisbon Portugal

A beautiful coastal city renowned for terrific sightseeing and a great food scene, why not spend the October Bank Holiday weekend in Lisbon?

Lisbon is finally getting the praise it deserves and it is slowly becoming one of Europe’s top city break destinations.  The city is very easy to navigate and if you don’t fancy walking it there are fantastic old trams that will bring you around all the highlights. There is plenty to see in Lisbon itself, but if you want to travel, you can take the train to the coastal towns of Cascais or Estoril or explore the UNESCO world heritage city of Sintra. 3 Parks For the Price of 2, And New Attractions at SeaWorld, Aquatica And Busch Gardens

Busch-Gardens-Iron-Gwazi-compressor

Ride the fastest, steepest hybrid coaster in the world, race your family and friends on Florida’s first-ever duelling water slide, or catch a concert in one of the festivals in SeaWorld Parks. There are so many new attractions in Florida that you won’t want to miss!

With all the new attractions in Florida, deciding which theme parks to visit is not easy. For some, a visit to Orlando would not be complete without riding Mako, Orlando’s tallest, fastest and longest coaster. Others might want to experience up-close animal encounters, but if you are travelling during the hot summer months, a day at Aquatica, Orlando’s No. 1 waterpark, might be a top priority.

It just so happens that you can experience all of the above with SeaWorld Parks 3 for 2 Ticket, which allows 14 consecutive days unlimited admission to SeaWorld, Aquatica and Busch Gardens from just €134!  I have teamed up with AttractionTickets.com who are offering this exclusive offer for a limited time. This ticket also gives you FREE unlimited parking at all parks and FREE coach transportations from Orlando to Busch Gardens. And that’s not all – this offer is available throughout 2020 and 2021.

New Attractions in Florida at SeaWorld:

SeaWorld is already home to some of Orlando’s best rollercoasters. Mako, Manta, Kraken, Infinity Falls and Journey to Atlantis are all in SeaWorld Orlando, but this year sees the launch of another new coaster ‘Ice Breaker’. This a multi-directional coaster that culminates in a reverse launch into the steepest beyond vertical drop in Florida. Its 48-inch rider height makes it suitable for families too – assuming you like thrill rides!

Ice Breaker at SeaWorld – 2020 Teaser from SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment on Vimeo.

As well as new attractions, you will also find lots of special events running in SeaWorld this year. The Seven Seas Food Festival features live concerts every weekend until the beginning of May. As well as top class performances, guests can enjoy local craft beers and food market stalls throughout the park. This festival culminates with concerts from Billy Ray Cyrus on the 2nd of May and Sean Paul on the 3rd of May. Concerts are included in the price of admission.

New Attractions in Florida at Busch Gardens:

The 206-feet tall Iron Gwazi coaster opens in Busch Gardens this spring. It will be North America’s tallest hybrid, and the fastest, steepest hybrid coaster in the world. Riders will experience three inversions, a 91-degree drop and speeds of 76 miles per hour! The height requirement is 48″ so thrill-seeking families can also enjoy this ride together. Are you brave enough to try it?

As well thrilling roller coasters like Tigris, SheiKra and Cheetah Hunt, Busch Gardens is also home to some of the world’s most endangered animals. This African-themed park is home to over 200 species, including Bengal tigers and organgutans. You can also take a safari ride through the park, where you may meet some of graceful giraffes – like this one!

Busch Gardens is also running special events throughout the year including the Food & Wine Festival, which is running until the 26th of April. This festival will include weekend concerts from artists such as The Commodores and KC & The Sunshine Band. Concerts are included in the price of admission.

New Attractions in Florida at Aquatica:

Not one to be left out, Aquatica has also got a new ride, Riptide Race. This is Florida’s first-ever duelling water slide. With a 68-foot tower, riders will race side-by-side on a raft, through 650 feet of indoor and outdoor sections. Now this is my kind of ride!

As well as Riptide Race, one of the this year’s new attractions in Florida, make sure find time to see why Aquatica has been voted Orlando’s No. 1 waterpark. Experience the feeling of weightlessness in recently opened KareKare Curl, or brave Ihu’s Breakaway Falls – at nearly 80-feet tall, this is Orlando’s steepest multi-drop tower of its kind. There are also lots of family rides in Aquatica, including Ray Rush, which has twists and turns inside a colossal water sphere.

Amazing Stena Line Sale – Sail To The UK for €7 And France for €14!

Stena-Estrid-sea-trial-#1-compressor

Visit the UK from just €7 one-way or France from €14 one-way with this amazing Stena Line sale for foot passengers.

To think it is cheaper to cross the Irish Sea than it is to get a taxi into town! You can also go to France for the price of a decent bottle of wine – this Stena Line sale is one of the best I’ve seen.

Stena Line has launched their Super-Saver sale to celebrate the arrival of their new ships Stena Estrid and Stena Edda. Stena Estrid is already sailing from Dublin to Holyhead and Stena Edda which will be sailing on the Belfast to Liverpool route in early March. Always wanted to go to a Premier League match? Fancy exploring the Lake District or the Scottish Highlands? Perhaps you might bring your children to Legoland? I also like the idea of taking the kids across the Irish Sea for the day. It is a novel thing to do during school holidays, and is cheaper than bringing them to the Zoo!

stena line sale to uk

The brand new Stena Estrid boasts Scandinavian inspired interiors, and according to Stena Line, it is the largest, most spacious and most comfortable ship to sail between Dublin and Holyhead.

You will find great facilities on board, making the 3-hour and 15 minute crossing sail by… There are two Happy World children’s play areas, two movie lounges, a large shopping area, Taste restaurant and this amazing Sky bar – pictured below. I am due to sail on this ship later in the year and can’t wait to see it for myself.

But it doesn’t stop there! If you prefer a little ‘Oh la la’ in France, the Stena Line sale will bring you from Rosslare to Cherbourg for just €14 one-way per adult and €9.50 one way per child. Stena Line has three crossings to France each week.

Amazing Holiday in Zanzibar, Flights & 4-Star Hotel, 5th September, 1 week, €892!

zanzibar

Think a holiday in Zanzibar is out of your price range? Think again! This amazing deal includes flights and a 4-star hotel for seven nights.

I was lucky enough to enjoy a holiday in Zanzibar many years ago, and trust me, the word ‘paradise’ is an understatement! Zanzibar is the Indian Ocean, so you can expect idyllic white sandy beaches and warm waters, but it also offers so much more. Although Zanzibar is full of luxury hotels, most of them are built to blend into the environment, so it still feels unspoilt.

Watching the locals fishing in their dhows, while you chill out on a hammock is typical of the lazy days you can expect there. Zanzibar has an underwater paradise too, it is the perfect place to try snorkelling or scuba diving. In fact my husband got his PADI dive licence there in five days.

The Travel Expert finds a great offer to holiday in Zanzibar

Of course if you want action, you can have that too. The capital Stone Town, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is well worth a visit. The Old Fort, bustling bazaars and Marrakech style medina feel exotic, and strolling through it’s narrow streets you can’t help with fall in love with its ornate houses. In fact, Stone Town gets its name from these very houses that are built with local stone.

I found a great deal staying in the popular Pongwe Bay Resort. Located on the beach and surrounded by lush gardens you will be treated to a junior suite with a sea view. There is a pool, sauna and solarium on site as well as a host of water sports available on the beach. This hotel receives excellent reviews on Tripadvisor and was also awarded a Certificate of Excellence.

Fly from Dublin to Zanzibar on the 5th of September and enjoy a seven night stay at the Pongwe Bay Resort for only €892 per person. This amazing holiday in Zanzibar includes flights with Ethiopian Airlines and accommodation with breakfast for seven nights. I flew with Ethiopian Airlines to Cape Town and enjoyed their service. You also get 2 x 23kg checked bags included in the price of the air fare!

So go on grab this superb deal while you can. September is a good time to visit Zanzibar, as average temperatures are a balmy 25 degrees and there is little rainfall. Tempted? Simply click on the links below.

5-Star All Inclusive Deal to the Dominican Republic, 1 week, 1st February 2020, €1427!

all inclusive resorts

800 miles of Caribbean coastline, year round sunshine, picture postcard beaches, and tropical rainforests. Why not swap the Canary Islands for the Caribbean next winter, and grab this all inclusive deal to the Dominican Republic.

Filled with luxury resorts and white sandy beaches, Punta Cana is the most popular resort in the Dominican Republic. Water sports are plentiful – try diving, snorkelling or enjoy a sunset cruise. The island’s interior is filled with tropical rainforests and lush mountains and is definitely worth exploring.

However, most of the hotels are all-inclusive, so many people tend to stay put and enjoy the onsite facilities. If you take a stroll along the beaches in Punta Cana you will discover the cutest beach houses selling local handcrafts and gifts.

There are countless accommodation offerings, but I couldn’t resist the value at the Bahia Principe Grand Punta Cana. For less than €1000, you can enjoy a week’s stay with flights, all meals and drinks included! Located less than 30 minutes from the airport, you can hop in a taxi or book a return private transfer in advance for just €16 per person.

Located on the superb Bávaro Beach, the hardest decision you will have to make is whether to spend the day at the beach, or in one of its two lake-style pools. Other facilities include a gym, spa, multi-sports courts and a water activity centre offering a wide selection of water sports. Paddle surf, kayaks, tennis, catamarans and snorkeling are all included in the all-inclusive arrangement for one hour per day, subject to availability.

There are six different restaurants and four bars to choose from, as well as a disco on site. The all-inclusive arrangement includes drinks in the nightclub too! The hotel is also great for families, with kids clubs, a children’s water park, baby station and teen clubs available.

The Bahia Principe Grand Punta Cana has two sister hotels close by, the Grand Bahia Principe Bavaro and Grand Bahia Principe Turquesa, and you are welcome to use all the facilities in all three hotels, except the buffet restaurants.

Fly from Dublin to Punta Cana on the 1st of February and enjoy a seven night stay in the Bahia Principe Grand Hotel for just €1427. I have chosen flights via Paris with Air France as the layover time is only circa two hours. There are many hotel options when you click on the link below. Luxury Short Break in Sardinia in June, Flights & 5-Star Hotel, €415pp

sardinia shutterstock-2

Treat yourself to a luxury short break in Sardinia and enjoy white sandy beaches, a picturesque old town and of course amazing Italian food…

With a direct three-hour flight from Dublin and a short a 10 minute airport transfer, you can be enjoying nice Italian food in the old town of Alghero, with one of Italy’s best beaches beside you! The medieval town of Alghero is beautifully preserved, with cobbled stone streets, trendy boutiques and a great food scene. There is also a beautiful white sandy beach in Alghero, which is not something that many Italian resorts can boast about.

If you like designer shopping then take a visit the Costa Smeralda, if only to window shop and see how the other half live! You might spot some celebrities while you are there, this is a very popular hang out for the rich and famous. If that doesn’t float your boat, take a trip to the neighbouring French island of Corsica and marvel at the stunning scenery – it is well worth a visit.

Fly direct to Alghero with Aer Lingus on the 14th of June and enjoy a luxury short break in the 5-star Carlos V Hotel for just €415 per person.  Price includes flights and hotel with breakfast for three nights. Located just 10 minutes from the airport, it is ideal for a short break. You can hop in a taxi and be chilling at the pool within a half hour of landing!

I stayed in this hotel many years ago and loved its seafront location and onsite spa. The outdoor terrace offers wonderful sea views and you can dine there during the summer months. However, the old town of Alghero is only a fifteen minute walk away which offers a superb selection of dining options.  The Carlos V is rated as Excellent on  Tripadvisor, making this luxury break in Sardinia superb value during the summer months.

October Bank Holiday Weekend Break to Vienna, 3 Nights, €329!

shutterstock_Vienna-compressor

This October bank holiday weekend break to Vienna is a great opportunity to explore one of Europe’s most elegant cities.

Elegant, historical, noble, when you think of booking a weekend break to Vienna, you may think it will be expensive. Not anymore! With the introduction of so many new routes from Dublin Airport, city breaks to Europe’s fashionable cities including Vienna, are much more affordable.

weekend break to vienna

The historical centre of Vienna is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with palaces, museums and churches all located very close together. It is very easy to navigate so you may wish to amble around admiring the stunning architecture, or do what most tourists do and get a horse and carriage. The former Imperial summer residence, the Schonbrunn Palace, is a must visit, with stunning gardens, monuments and even a zoo – it is one of Vienna’s top attractions.

World class composers such as Mozart, Beethoven and Strauss all lived in Vienna so it is no surprise that one of the world’s leading opera houses is here. However Vienna’s music scene offers much more than opera. If you venture out of the historical centre you will find plenty of trendy pubs and clubs that will play music until the small hours.

weekend break to vienna
