New Year In Iceland, Flights, Baggage & 4-Star Hotel, 4-Nights, €579

aurora-borealis-69221_1280_opt

Plan ahead and spend New Year in Iceland – who knows the Northern Lights might even light up the skies on New Years Eve…

I went to Iceland a few years ago and I loved it. It was everything I hoped it would be and so much more. The scenery, the people, everything about the trip was amazing, even though we had the worst snow storms. We saw the Northern Lights, something that was on my bucket list for years. This time of year is a good time to see them, so fingers crossed you will too.

We also swam in the Blue Lagoon. Bathing in the steamy waters of the Blue Lagoon with snow all around us was something really special. In fact the whole island looked like a Winter wonderland.

weekend in Iceland

I found a great deal staying in the 4-star Icelandair Reykjavik Natura Hotel. This eco-friendly hotel is superb value and is home to the only heated indoor hotel pool in the area. You will also find a 24-hour gym, steam bath, sauna and hot tub.

Rooms are small but modern, and are equipped with tea and coffee making facilities and a fridge. This can be useful in a country that is not cheap on the ground!

I have based this deal for New Year in Iceland on a four night stay, which should give you time to see the highlights. TOP TIP: Make sure you book the Northern Lights tour for the night you arrive. If it is cancelled due to poor visibility (which happens regularly), this will give you time to re schedule for another night.

I have added direct links to Skyscanner below which show flights departing on the 29th of December for €242, but the cost I have highlighted below is €334. It is important to note that the cheaper fare of €242 is non changeable and does not include checked baggage. Iceland will be freezing in December – you will need to bring a checked bag!

Therefore. I have priced this package on the Economy Standard Fare which includes cabin baggage, checked baggage, seat selection, and a free date change. I recommend scrolling down to the Icelandair website to book these flights, and not to book via the third-party website.

So go on, plan ahead and ring in the New Year in Iceland!

Family Holiday in Lake Garda for October Mid Term Break: 1 week Flights & Apt From €1115

sirmione_lake_garda_italy-1544123_vxfeni(1)_opt (1)

Hoping to get away for the October mid term break? This family holiday in Lake Garda might do the trick!

With Ryanair and Aer Lingus both flying to Verona at the end of October, a family holiday in Lake Garda might be a good idea for the Halloween break. I hope that travel restrictions will not be in place at that time, but as always I recommend booking accommodation with free cancellation just in case you are unable to travel.

This deal is priced with Ryanair flights, but if you prefer to fly Aer Lingus the supplement is €79 per person. Both airlines will allow free changes up to 31st December, but with Ryanair you must travel before 31st December, Aer Lingus will allow you to change to travel in 2022.

Read: Aer Lingus allowing free changes up to 31st December

Lake Garda ticks all boxes, it’s got scenery, sights and plenty of style! Enjoy quiet lakeside towns, Gardaland’s thrill rides, and explore the new cycle path that is due to open this summer. I love taking water taxis across the lake and discovering new towns. The nearby city of Verona should also not be missed. One thing for sure is that if you book a family holiday in Lake Garda, you won’t be short of things to do!

Sirmione, Lake Garda

There are so many different resorts to choose from, but my personal favourite is Sirmione. It’s situated at the south of the Lake, which is handy for visiting Gardaland as well as being close to Verona. Sirmione is situated at the tip of a long peninsula that juts out into the Lake. The old town has a fairytale like castle that sets the tone and gives a magical feel to the place. Take time to explore the narrow streets which are buzzing with local shops and Italian Osterias.

The Garda Village apartments are situated close to Sirmione near the lakeshore and are ideally located if you want to explore Lake Garda and some of Italy’s top attractions. These basic bungalow style apartments are situated in a large complex with camping and mobile homes too. There is plenty of on-site entertainment including a swimming pool.

family holiday in Lake Garda for the October mid term break

Personally I would recommend a car if booking a family holiday in Lake Garda ( there is free parking on site), but they also have a shuttle service to take you to nearby attractions, if you don’t fancy driving. There are also some gorgeous holiday homes available, check out this beauty with a private pool.

holiday home in Lake garda with private pool

There are so many things to see and do nearby, but if travelling with kids, Gardaland is a must. This is one of the best theme parks in Europe and is a great day out for all the family. I would also recommend a  visit to the amphitheatre in Verona, but for more inspiration check out my handy guide to Lake Garda. I have been asked about weather during October, and while it may not be sun bathing weather, it should be warm, with the average temperature approx. 16 degrees last year – see historical weather here.

Gardaland, Lake Garda

Fly from Dublin to Verona on the 22nd of October for only €126 per person with Ryanair, alternatively choose to fly on the 23rd of October with Aer Lingus for €188 per person.

The Garda Village two-bedroom bungalows are €611 for seven nights. Mobile home rates are cheaper and also available. There are many more accommodation options to choose from including some gorgeous holiday homes here.

Santorini Holiday – Flights & 4-Star Hotel, 8th October, 1 week, €497

oia-416135_1280_opt

Scratch one off the bucket list and enjoy a Santorini holiday this year.

Santorini is undoubtedly one of top places to visit in the world, so I was delighted when Aer Lingus and Ryanair they were going to continue flying direct from Dublin airport this year. Wouldn’t a Santorini holiday be the ultimate way to make up for the last two years?

Santorini is still on my own bucket list – I can’t wait to visit, but I want to spend a week there, and not simply get a glimpse from a cruise ship visit. The picture postcard villages of Oia and Fira have to be one of the best places in the world to watch the sunset – and this is only possible if you book a Santorini holiday.

holiday deal to Santorini

The island is quite small, so if you choose to stay on the beach side, you will never be longer than 30 minutes bus ride from the stunning villages of Oia, Imerovigli and Fira. The beach resorts have plenty of life, and the restaurants and bars offer better value for money.

I often see luxury hotels and Airbnbs in Santorini with private pools being advertised, but it is also possible to book a Santorini holiday on a budget – there are plenty of three and four-star hotel options to choose from.

holiday deal to Santorini
I found a great deal in the highly rated Unique Galini Oia. This white-washed guest house is located in Santorini’s most popular resort Oia. This Cycladic-style home with a heated swimming pool, sun terrace and air-conditioned rooms is rated as Excellent on TripAdvisor and is great value for such a central location. A homemade breakfast is also included in the price of your stay.

Fly from Dublin to Thira on the 8th of October and enjoy a seven-night Santorini Holiday in this superb location with breakfast included, for just €497 per person.

How To See The Northern Lights Through Your Own Glass Igloo

igloos-view-from-air-kakslauttanen-jpg_opt

Seeing the Northern Lights is pretty spectacular no matter where you are, but to see them from your very own glass igloo is the ultimate bucket list experience.

I had a few requests from people asking how to get to ‘the place with the glass igloos’. It seems many people want to turn their dreams into reality, or spoil their partners for special birthdays or anniversaries. So I decided to do some investigating and find out how to see the Northern Lights through your own glass igloo.

how to see the Nothern Lights

Kakslauttanen is one of the best places to see the Northern Lights, during the aurora season from late August to late April. It is situated 250 km north of the Arctic Circle, so you can expect to find the cleanest countryside, the purest water (you can drink straight from the stream), and the freshest air from almost anywhere in the world.

However Kakslauttanen is not all about the igloos and the aurora. There are so many activities available, you will be spoiled for choice. Think snow mobiling, husky or reindeer safaris, ice fishing, tobogganing, cross country skiing and lots more. For a truly unique experience try their ice swimming and smoke saunas combination.

how to see Northern Lights in a glass igloo

There is a wide choice of accommodation, including log cabins, chalets, snow igloos and of course their famous glass igloos. They also have large glass igloos with a fireplace and sauna, that hold up to six people, if you want to bring a few friends or family along.

Northern Lights

How to get there?

Kakslauttanen is located in Finland, but it is so far North that it is actually a 90 minute flight from Helsinki. Finnair fly from Dublin to Helsinki almost every day, but to get the connecting flight to Ivalo you need to take a morning flight which only operates three times per week. You will find alternative flights, but be careful, they will involve multiple stops with flying times over ten hours.

Another option is to spend a night or two in Helsinki before flying to Ivalo, this will give you more options with flights. Ivalo airport is only a short thirty minute transfer to Kakslauttanen and the hotel will arrange transport for you.

Northern Lights

I found a great deal on flights over St. Patrick’s weekend for four nights, for just €327return. This should give you optimum time to see the Northern Lights and try some of the many activities available, including snow mobiling, cross country skiing etc.

There are various room types to choose from, but the price for four nights in a glass igloo is €870 per person – this brings the total cost to €1097 per person for a four night stay, based on two sharing. Larger igloos for groups or families are also available.

Instagram

So now you know how to see the Northern Lights through your own glass igloo, the question is will you scratch one off the bucket list to experience a trip of a lifetime?

Winter Week in Lanzarote, 30th January, Flights & Apartment, €287!

Pool-floatie-shutterstock-compressor

Beat the January blues with a winter week in Lanzarote. Price includes flights and apartment, but if you have airline vouchers to use, simply select the accommodation option below.

If your summer holidays didn’t go to plan, think about booking a winter week in Lanzarote instead. The year round sunshine and long sandy beaches are the perfect contrast to the cold wet winters at home.  It’s not all about sun and sand though, there is plenty of good sightseeing as well as some excellent duty free shops to choose from.

I like that their building regulations ensure that there are no high rise buildings – Lanzarote feels less commercialised than some of its Spanish counterparts.

With many resorts to choose from I think it is fair to say there is a place in Lanzarote for everyone to enjoy. I have stayed in both Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca, and loved them both. Although the largest resort on the island, Puerto del Carmen never feels over-crowded. The old town has some fantastic restaurants, and having a drink at one of the waterfront cafes as the sun sets over the harbour, is a lovely way to end your day.

5-Star Deal to Croatia, 12th October, 1 week, €549!

croatia hotel

Always wanted to see Dubrovnik? Check out this super deal to Croatia in August. Price includes flights and five-star hotel for three nights, with breakfast included.

The medieval city of Dubrovnik should be on everyone’s wish list. It is so well preserved and looks like something straight out of a fairytale. Walk around the city walls, take the cable car to Srd Hill and then catch the sunset from one of the many cliff bars. Although you can stay in the heart of the old town, I think the best way to enjoy it is to holiday in one of the resorts close by.

Instagram

Dubrovnik is actually quite small and can be packed with cruise ship visitors during the day. However, staying outside the centre, lets you have the best of both world. Relax by the sea or pool during the day and pop in the evening when the city is less crowded.

I have chosen the pretty town of Cavtat, a resort I stayed in with my family a few years ago. Once a small fishing village it is now a picture postcard resort, with upmarket hotels and crystal clear waters. Dine in one of the many restaurants that are dotted along the seafront promenade, and admire the sea views and mountainous backdrop.

Easter Weekend in Lisbon, Flights & 4-Star Hotel, 3 Nights, €456

Lisbon

A beautiful coastal city renowned for terrific sightseeing and a great food scene, spend Easter weekend in Lisbon and enjoy one of Europe’s best city breaks.

Lisbon is one Europe’s top city break destinations, and after my recent visit I now know why! It has a beautiful old town, with pastel-coloured buildings with terracotta rooftops as far as the eye can see. Lisbon is very easy to navigate too, but if you don’t fancy walking it, there are fantastic old trams that will bring you around all the highlights.

The food scene is superb, and a visit to TimeOut Market is a must! I loved Lx Factory too, an eclectic mix of restaurants, bars and shops all in one great open space.

There is plenty to see in Lisbon itself, but if you want to travel, you can take the train to the coastal towns of Cascais or Estoril, or explore the UNESCO World Heritage City of Sintra, and its palaces, castles and museums.

Family Christmas Market Break in Copenhagen, 27th December, 3 Nights, €1048!

christmas-carousel-shutterstock-compressor

Want to go away for Twixmas this year? Enjoy a Christmas market break in Copenhagen. Experience the magic of Tivoli Gardens as it is transformed into a winter wonderland.

Open since 1843, Tivoli Gardens is one of the world’s oldest amusement parks. Over one million people descend on Tivoli at Christmas time, to experience one of Europe’s best Christmas markets. It is lit up with 500,000 fairy lights and has Christmas decorations at every corner. Tivoli Gardens is now open from the 16th of November to the 5th of January, making a Christmas market break in Copenhagen a great choice for all the family, either before or after Christmas.

christmas market break in Copenhagen by The Travel Expert

There are theme park rides in Tivoli Gardens throughout the year, but at Christmas time there are added light shows, market stalls, and top class concerts. It is no doubt one of the best places to soak up the Christmas atmosphere.

Of course Copenhagen offers so much more than Tivoli Gardens. Enjoy some of the excellent cuisine that Copenhagen is renowned for, or shop along the longest pedestrianised shopping street in Europe.

No visit to Copenhagen would be complete without visiting The Little Mermaid. Personally, I wasn’t overly impressed by her, but the kids should enjoy the story behind it. When in Rome and all that…

Something that does live up to the hype are the pretty streets of Nyhavn. The multicoloured houses are an Instagrammers paradise. I loved pottering in and out of the numerous coffee shops, restaurants and souvenir shops.

I found a great deal staying in the 4-star Scandic Copenhagen Hotel. Located just eight minutes walk from Tivoli Gardens, this is ideally located for a Christmas market break in Copenhagen. This modern hotel has family rooms available that are similarly priced to standard rooms, and include a free buffet breakfast and free WiFi.
