20 City Break Destinations for 2022

Split, Croatia

With new routes announced from many Irish airports, as well as some old favourites, I have hand-picked some of the best city break destinations for 2022.

I’m a big fan of city breaks. I love how much you can discover in a new city such a short space of time. However, if you’re not one for pounding the pavements and covering an entire city on foot, settling down with a coffee and people watching in a town square can be just as enjoyable. We are fortunate to have many of Europe’s top city break destinations available from a variety of Irish airports this year. I have picked my top 20 to inspire your next break away.

1. Matera – Italy

This Italian gem might be an unknown quantity for some of you, but believe me it needs to be on your radar. Some may have seen it in the opening scene of the new James Bond movie – No Time To Die, but it is even more impressive in person.

Located close to Bari in the heel of Italy, it is one of the most fascinating cities I have visited. The old town or ‘Sassi’ is full of boutique hotels, Airbnb’s and restaurants, built inside ancient caves.

It has a remarkable rags to riches story – to go from being Italy’s poorest city to the European Capital of Culture for 2019 is quite a feat. Located just 50 minutes from Bari Airport, which is serviced from Dublin with Ryanair, it is easily accesible. This is one of my top city break destinations for 2022.

Check out my travel guide to a weekend in Matera here.

2. Copenhagen – Denmark

Sarah Slattery, The Travel Expert, takes a cycling tour of Copenhagen

I am always surprised by the amount of people who haven’t visited Copenhagen, and with Ryanair, SAS and Norwegian all flying to Copenhagen from Ireland, the competition is rife for cheap flights!

Copenhagen’s compact size makes it easy to navigate, and it is perfect for a short city break. The colourful Nyhavn canal is sure to impress you, as will Copenhagen’s great food scene. Tivoli Gardens is a beautiful year-round attraction that children will love, making Copenhagen one of the most popular city breaks for families.

Check out my guide to Copenhagen for some more info about this great city.

3. Pisa, Tuscany – Italy

weekend break in Tuscany

While Pisa is not one of my favourite city break destinations, it is superbly located to explore the rolling hills of Tuscany – one of my favourite places to visit. Pisa is served from Dublin and Cork airports this summer, and airfares are great value.

There is usually a bus service to Florence following a Ryanair flight, but I recommend hiring a car to make the most of your trip.  San Gimignano is one of Italy’s most beautiful walled towns and is located just over an hour from Pisa.

There are many more towns and villages to discover in Tuscany, but make sure you save time to visit the Leaning Tower of Pisa. It is located close to the airport so it is best seen when you arrive, or before you leave to fly home.

Don’t miss a trip to Palma’s cathedral, and a stroll along the marina is a must in the evenings. Palma is also a great choice for a shopping break, and is an ideal launchpad to explore the rest of the island.

Best City Break Destinations for 2019 - Nice

Up until a few years ago you had to book a package holiday for one or two weeks if you wanted to visit the Greek Islands. We are so fortunate now to have a selection of Greek islands to choose from, with most flights operating two or three times per week.

Corfu is served from Dublin and Shannon airports, while Santorini, Crete, Rhodes are served from Dublin airport. There are also flights to Thessaloniki and Athens from Dublin airport.

Corfu Town and Rhodes Town are ideal city break destinations, they both offer pretty old towns with gorgeous sea views.

Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese Islands in Greece and boasts a rich historical past mixed with modern resorts and luxurious hotels. Rhodes Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage City and the Colossus of Rhodes is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Don’t miss a trip to the whitewashed, picture perfect village of Lindos too.

If you prefer a more low key vibe, the old town of Chania in Crete might suit you. Famous for its 14th century Venetian harbour and its waterfront restaurants, it has an Italian feel, but without the crowds.  There are numerous boat trips departing from the harbour too, including day trips to Santorini. 20. Washington – USA

best american holidays from Ireland

Washington’s monument trail is like an open-air museum. You would want to be made of stone if the Lincoln, Jefferson and Vietnam Veterans Memorials didn’t impress you. The silence at Arlington Cemetery is one of those experiences you never forget, and of course there’s always The White House…

Washington is also home to the Smithsonian Institution, which is the world’s largest museum, and arguably the most interesting. You will find the National Air & Space Museum here too, and what I love about Washington is all of these are free. It is rare to find a city break where you don’t feel obliged to fork out for entrance tickets to top attractions.

Washington can be reached from Dublin airport with Aer Lingus and United Airlines.

Stay in a two-bedroom apartment at the popular Pierre & Vacances Salou, or stay at the PortAventura Hotel, where you can walk in and out of the park as many times as you like. You can also enjoy a complimentary family pass to Ferrari Land, which is located nearby.

Palma ticks all boxes if you are looking for short breaks from Dublin, Cork, Shannon or Ireland West. Don’t miss a trip to Palma’s cathedral, and a stroll along the marina is a must in the evenings. Palma is also a great choice for a shopping break, and is an ideal launchpad to explore the rest of the island.

There are many different resorts to choose from, but I found a superb deal in the 5-star CM Mallorca Palace. This luxury beachfront hotel is located about an hour from Palma, however the reviews are so good, you may not want to leave!

Price for a three-night break from Dublin is €298 per person, or a seven-night break from Shannon is €435 per person.

7. Algarve: Flights & 4-Star Adults-Only hotel, 4 Nights, B&B – €392pp

4-star beach hotels in the Algarve

The Algarve is always a popular choice, and I was surprised to find good value flights still available with Aer Lingus during Easter holidays. I have chosen a four-night break but simply change the dates on the links below if you wish to extend your stay.

The adult-only Falesia Hotel receives excellent reviews and offers direct access to the beautiful 8km beach of Praia da Falesia. Located in the pretty town Olhos de Agua,  yet close enough to the lively resort Albufeira, it offers the bets of both worlds. There is a choice dining options and bars if you prefer to stay on site, as well as an indoor pool and Spa.

Otherwise known as ‘The Pink City’, Toulouse is a colourful, vibrant city that is a pleasure to ramble around. Although one of France’s largest cities, it doesn’t feel like it when you are lost in the Old Town or relaxing by the Garonne River.

Constantly voted as one of the top places where French people want to live, this University town offers a lively atmosphere as well as some outstanding museums, including the Space and Aviation museums. I enjoyed a weekend in Toulouse a few years ago and loved it – Toulouse is also ideal for solo travellers.

Read my Toulouse travel blog – why you should visit and what to do when you get there.

I have chosen the Privilège Appart Hôtel Saint Exupéry for its central location and superb views.  Priced at only €158 per person based on a three-night stay from the 16th of April, it offers excellent value for a short break during Easter holidays. Many more dates and durations are available.

Biarritz is one of those cities that is often overlooked, but it shouldn’t be! We stayed here a few years ago while visiting northern Spain and loved it. Its got a fantastic beach, gorgeous restaurants and great shopping. There is everything from designer boutiques to surf shops, and a daily food market that you won’t want to miss.

Speaking of food – Biarritz is only 45 minutes drive from San Sebastian, so if you fancy hiring a car for the day, it might be a good opportunity to visit one of Europe’s best food destinations.

I priced this trip on a three-night stay in the highly rated Best Western Plus Hôtel Littéraire Jules Verne Hotel. Located in the heart of the town, it offers superb value for a short break during Easter holidays.

Sweden is a country that is on my own wish list, and this super deal to Sweden’s second city is a great introduction. With return airfares from €163, this must be one of the best value short breaks over Easter weekend.

Despite its seaside location, Gothenburg is known as the Green City. It has an abundance of green spaces, and its work on sustainability has made it one of Europe’s leading cities in this field. Gothenburg is an inviting city renowned for its friendly seaside charm, as well as its great food and craft beer scene. Thrill seekers might also like to try the many rides and rollercoasters at Scandinavia’s largest theme park – Liseberg.

The Radisson Blu Riverside overlooks Gothenburg’s harbour and the Göta River. It also boasts a wellness centre and a rooftop terrace with a hot tub.

New York for New Year – Direct Flights & 4-Star Hotel, 4 Nights, €1190pp

new-york-742795_1280_opt (1)

Plan ahead and enjoy a New Year to remember! Check out this super deal to New York for New Year and get planning a festive break away.

New York is one of the few places that I have re-visited many times, but the wow factor never goes away. I always feel like I am part of a movie set, and even the most simple thing like hailing a yellow cab, gives me joy. New York is definitely one of my favourite cities in the world, and being in New York for New Year is about as good as it gets!

Instagram

Few cities capture the magic of Christmas better than New York. The city is covered in lights, Department Stores bring a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘window shopping’, and is there a more famous Christmas tree than the one at Rockefeller Centre? Last year’s 85 years old Christmas tree was 79ft tall and covered in 50,000 lights!

And let’s not forget ice skating in Central Park – another iconic winter scene.

New York for New Year

The annual ‘Ball Drop’ in Times Square is a free event, although expect to queue for a few hours to catch this famous celebration. However, entertainment starts at 6pm so there will be live music and celebrity chats while you wait.

If the Ball Drop isn’t your thing, don’t worry, there will be plenty of events on in New York for New Year. We spent New Year’s Eve in New York many years ago and never went to Times Square – we enjoyed an amazing night in a Soho restaurant bar instead! Ask your hotel for nearby events and be sure to book in advance.

Of course a trip to New York for New Year is not just about New Year’s Eve. You will have four days to explore New York’s highlights. The Empire State Building, Top of the Rock and One World Observatory have been the favourites for taking in the skyline, but thrillseekers might like to try New York’s newest attraction – Summit One Vanderbilt.

I found flights with United Airlines, flying direct from Dublin to Newark. Contrary to what you may think the transfer time from Newark to Manhattan is similar to JFK.

Return airfares start at just €542 per person on the 28th of December. This price is based on the Basic Economy fare, but I recommend opting for the Economy fare of €652 which includes checked baggage, seat selection and free changes if required – don’t worry I have based this €899 offer on this fare.

Qatar Airways Black Friday Sale Includes Return Flights to Maldives from €680!

Maldives-with-Qatar-Airways

Fly to the Maldives from €680 return, and Zanzibar from just €535 return, with Qatar Airways Black Friday Sale.

Since my trip to the Maldives last week I have had many requests for prices, so I am delighted to showcase Qatar Airways Black Friday offers, which include amazing prices to Maldives, South Africa, Australia and lots more. All Black Friday sale fares are available to book from Friday 26th November.

Qatar Airways Black Friday

I have been a big fan of Qatar Airways since I flew with them to Malaysia in 2018, and I am not a bit surprised that they have been voted the world’s best airline six times – an achievement held by no other airline.

They have also won the world’s best business class, best business class seat, business class lounge, and catering. I could go on and on, but it might be easier to read my review of Qatar Airways service here and see the highlights from my recent trip with Qatar Airways here.

It was not only Qatar Airways business class that impressed me. Economy class passengers can enjoy a generous baggage allowance , free seat selection and unlimited drinks on board – all included in the cost! And that’s not all – Qatar Airways has over 4,000 entertainment options to choose from.

Children are well catered for too, with kids traveller packs and children’s meals available. Wi-Fi is available on selected flights and lounge access is available to purchase – see more here.

Another massive advantage of booking with Qatar Airways is the guaranteed flexibility that is offered across all fare types. If you book now, you have peace of mind knowing you have unlimited date and destination changes, or no-quibble refunds.

These flexible booking options are available for bookings made up to 31st May 2022 – see more about Qatar Airways guaranteed flexibility here.

boston skyline

With the USA open for international visitors isn’t is about time you planned a trip Stateside? This super weekend in Boston is available on selected dates from January to March, including Valentines weekend.

Boston is the perfect city for a weekend break. It is easy to navigate on foot, and many of the top attractions are close together. There are so many things to do over a weekend in Boston, but make sure to take time to chill out and appreciate its historic centre too!

Old State Hall, Boston

Boston is a mecca for shoppers, with everything from Bloomingdales to Primark located here, but don’t miss Faneuil Hall, also known as Quincy Market. This is a great place to enjoy some local artisan foods and to pick up some souvenirs to bring home.

I found a great deal staying in the 4-star boutique hotel Staypineapple, South End. Located in Boston’s historic quarter and close to the Back Bay area, this modern chic hotel is within walking distance of Boston’s top attractions, restaurants and bars.

4-Star Holiday Deal to Malta, 23rd March, 1 week, €234pp

malta-292181_1280_opt

Malta is steeped in history and culture, and is blessed with 300 days of sunshine. This holiday deal to Malta is the perfect way to experience it.

For a small island in the Mediterranean, just 17 miles long and 9 miles wide, Malta sure packs a few punches. Its natural beauty can be seen in the many limestone cliffs, turquoise waters and hidden coves that are dotted around the island, and it is also home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites. With average temperatures of 17 degrees in March and cheap airfares to get you there, this holiday deal to Malta is a great value spring break.

Take a boat trip to the famous Blue Lagoon, go snorkelling in its crystal clear waters or explore some of the many Game of Thrones locations.  There are so many things to do in Malta.

The capital, Valletta is one of the three UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Malta. With 320 historic monuments and a stunning natural harbour, no holiday to Malta would be complete without visiting this incredible city. Built by the Knights of St. John, it is described as ‘one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world’ by UNESCO.

One of the advantages of being a ‘small’ city is that rather than being full of massive international hotel chains, you can expect to find chic boutique hotels within the city walls. You will also discover trendy shops, bars and restaurants, and a lively atmosphere.

valletta is a must visit if on holiday to malta
There are many holiday resorts on the island but I have chosen Mellieha for my holiday deal to Malta. It is home to one of Malta’s best beaches, and is generally considered one of Malta’s more relaxing resorts.

The 4-star Hotel Solana has a hill top location in the centre of the city and offers stunning views from its roof-top pool. I have based this price on a standard room with balcony, but there are many room types available, including junior suites and studio apartments.

Short Break in Marbella – 14th May, Flights & Hotel, 3 nights €272pp

Holiday World Show - Beach_opt

Kickstart your summer with a short break in Marbella for just €272! This super deal includes flights and three-nights hotel accommodation.

May is a great time to enjoy a short break in Marbella. The Old Town and marina at Puerto Banus are less busy, and of course prices are lower than the peak summer months. Ryanair is offering return flights from Dublin to Malaga in October for just €110, and there is a host of accommodation options to choose from.

Enjoy long strolls along the promenade that leads from Marbella Old Town into Puerto Banus. The Old Town is extremely pretty, and in typical Spanish fashion, boasts white washed buildings brimming with pretty flowers.

Marbella

The main square, Orange Square,  has a wide selection of restaurants to choose from, and you will find plenty of retail therapy in the Old Town.

Puerto Banus is where the nightlife happens – the port is adorned with numerous bars and restaurants. Although restaurants and bars are plentiful, it is recommended to book your favourites in advance. However, travelling in May you should find things are a lot less busy here.

There is nothing quite like wandering from one end of the port to the other, gazing at the super yachts berthed in the marina, or ogling the luxury cars zipping past. There are plenty of designer shops along the marina too, if even for window shopping.

Puerto Banus marina

However, Puerto Banus offers more than just the marina. There is a large selection of shops and restaurants away from the port, including a large El Corte Ingles, that sells everything from clothing to kayaks.

I found a great deal to the 4-star Princesa Playa Apart-hotel, which is located right beside the beach and just five minutes walk from the Old Town in Marbella. The small roof-top pool with sea views is particularly popular with guests. The location couldn’t be better and is highly recommended on TripAdvisor.

short break in Marbella
Princesa Playa

This is a super choice if you are looking for short break in Marbella that won’t break the bank. Price is just €162 per person for three nights on the 14th of May.

If you are looking for the glitz and glamour that Marbella is renowned for, then check out the adult-only Amàre Beach Hotel. Its stunning beachfront location on top of its stylish modern interior, luxury Spa and upmarket Amàre Club, has made this hotel the place to be seen in Marbella. Price for a three-night stay here is €325 per person.

The Amalfi Coast is one of Italy’s most beautiful coastlines, and this special offer to Sorrento gives you the perfect opportunity to explore all its highlights. The views from the coastline, combined with colourful hilltop towns have made it a bucket list favourite for many years.

Instagram
Sorrento is one of the biggest resorts along the coast, and also one of the liveliest. The streets are full of al fresco eateries and plenty of designer shops. Sipping a cocktail as you watch the stylish Italians pass you by is a nice start to the evening, and a nice meal in one of Sorrento’s fantastic restaurants is the perfect way to end it.

Weekend Break in Venice – 3 Nights, Flights & Hotel, 24th September, €392pp

Vaporetto on the Grand Canal, Venice

There has never been a better time to visit one of the world’s most beautiful cities. This weekend break in Venice is the perfect way to make up for lost time!

The unique floating city of Venice simply has to be visited at least once in a lifetime. It is romantic, captivating and will inspire you at every corner. There are so many iconic sights to see and this weekend break in Venice will give you the perfect opportunity to see them.

With international visitors starting to return, you should be able to enjoy a holiday atmosphere, but without the massive crowds. Sipping a latte on St Mark’s Square and taking a gondola ride through the canals, both cost a small fortune, but simply have to be done! There are plenty of things you can do for free though.

Visit the Basilica di San Marco and the Campanile Tower, cross the famous Rialto bridge or simply wander through the back streets and alleyways and see every day Venetian life. Read my post about the top things to do in Venice here.

New Year In Iceland, Flights, Baggage & 4-Star Hotel, 4-Nights, €579

aurora-borealis-69221_1280_opt

Plan ahead and spend New Year in Iceland – who knows the Northern Lights might even light up the skies on New Years Eve…

I went to Iceland a few years ago and I loved it. It was everything I hoped it would be and so much more. The scenery, the people, everything about the trip was amazing, even though we had the worst snow storms. We saw the Northern Lights, something that was on my bucket list for years. This time of year is a good time to see them, so fingers crossed you will too.

We also swam in the Blue Lagoon. Bathing in the steamy waters of the Blue Lagoon with snow all around us was something really special. In fact the whole island looked like a Winter wonderland.

Read my top things to do in Iceland.

weekend in Iceland

I found a great deal staying in the 4-star Icelandair Reykjavik Natura Hotel. This eco-friendly hotel is superb value and is home to the only heated indoor hotel pool in the area. You will also find a 24-hour gym, steam bath, sauna and hot tub.

Rooms are small but modern, and are equipped with tea and coffee making facilities and a fridge. This can be useful in a country that is not cheap on the ground!

I have based this deal for New Year in Iceland on a four night stay, which should give you time to see the highlights. TOP TIP: Make sure you book the Northern Lights tour for the night you arrive. If it is cancelled due to poor visibility (which happens regularly), this will give you time to re schedule for another night.

I have added direct links to Skyscanner below which show flights departing on the 29th of December for €242, but the cost I have highlighted below is €334. It is important to note that the cheaper fare of €242 is non changeable and does not include checked baggage. Iceland will be freezing in December – you will need to bring a checked bag!

Therefore. I have priced this package on the Economy Standard Fare which includes cabin baggage, checked baggage, seat selection, and a free date change. I recommend scrolling down to the Icelandair website to book these flights, and not to book via the third-party website.

So go on, plan ahead and ring in the New Year in Iceland!

Family Holiday in Lake Garda for October Mid Term Break: 1 week Flights & Apt From €1115

sirmione_lake_garda_italy-1544123_vxfeni(1)_opt (1)

Hoping to get away for the October mid term break? This family holiday in Lake Garda might do the trick!

With Ryanair and Aer Lingus both flying to Verona at the end of October, a family holiday in Lake Garda might be a good idea for the Halloween break. I hope that travel restrictions will not be in place at that time, but as always I recommend booking accommodation with free cancellation just in case you are unable to travel.

This deal is priced with Ryanair flights, but if you prefer to fly Aer Lingus the supplement is €79 per person. Both airlines will allow free changes up to 31st December, but with Ryanair you must travel before 31st December, Aer Lingus will allow you to change to travel in 2022.

Lake Garda ticks all boxes, it’s got scenery, sights and plenty of style! Enjoy quiet lakeside towns, Gardaland’s thrill rides, and explore the new cycle path that is due to open this summer. I love taking water taxis across the lake and discovering new towns. The nearby city of Verona should also not be missed. One thing for sure is that if you book a family holiday in Lake Garda, you won’t be short of things to do!

Sirmione, Lake Garda

There are so many different resorts to choose from, but my personal favourite is Sirmione. It’s situated at the south of the Lake, which is handy for visiting Gardaland as well as being close to Verona. Sirmione is situated at the tip of a long peninsula that juts out into the Lake. The old town has a fairytale like castle that sets the tone and gives a magical feel to the place. Take time to explore the narrow streets which are buzzing with local shops and Italian Osterias.

The Garda Village apartments are situated close to Sirmione near the lakeshore and are ideally located if you want to explore Lake Garda and some of Italy’s top attractions. These basic bungalow style apartments are situated in a large complex with camping and mobile homes too. There is plenty of on-site entertainment including a swimming pool.

family holiday in Lake Garda for the October mid term break

Personally I would recommend a car if booking a family holiday in Lake Garda ( there is free parking on site), but they also have a shuttle service to take you to nearby attractions, if you don’t fancy driving. There are also some gorgeous holiday homes available, check out this beauty with a private pool.

There are so many things to see and do nearby, but if travelling with kids, Gardaland is a must. This is one of the best theme parks in Europe and is a great day out for all the family. I would also recommend a  visit to the amphitheatre in Verona, but for more inspiration check out my handy guide to Lake Garda. I have been asked about weather during October, and while it may not be sun bathing weather, it should be warm, with the average temperature approx. 16 degrees last year – see historical weather here.

Gardaland, Lake Garda

Fly from Dublin to Verona on the 22nd of October for only €126 per person with Ryanair, alternatively choose to fly on the 23rd of October with Aer Lingus for €188 per person.

The Garda Village two-bedroom bungalows are €611 for seven nights. Mobile home rates are cheaper and also available. There are many more accommodation options to choose from including some gorgeous holiday homes here.
