The Best Beach Hotels In The Algarve

Dunas Douradas Beach Club

Planning a getaway this year or next? Check out my best beach hotels on the Algarve to help you on your way.

I believe when overseas holidays come back in large numbers, beach hotels are going to be the most sought after. With 100 beaches stretching over 150 km of coastline, it is not surprising that there are numerous beach hotels and apartments in the Algarve. I’ve hand-picked some of the best beach hotels in the Algarve to suit all tastes and budgets – hopefully there will be one here to suit you.

Instagram

1.  5-Star Vila Vita Parc, Porches

The best beach hotel on the Algarve - Vila Vita Parc

Voted the 3rd best Destination Spa Resort in the world by Conde Nast Traveller last year, the Vila Vita Parc hotel is one of the Algarve’s most luxurious hotels. Perched on a cliff top in 54 acres of subtropical gardens, with panoramic ocean views, it doesn’t get much better than this.

There are numerous accommodation options to choose from including suites and villas, and with six bars and 10 restaurants, including a two Michelin-starred restaurant, once you enter Vila Vita Parc, you may leave until it is time to go home.

2.  4-Star Pestana Dom Joao II, Alvor

Alvor beach, Algarve

Alvor is one of my favourite resorts on the Algarve, I love it’s beach, restaurants, and the fact that it is still relatively unspoilt. The 4-star Pestana Dom Joao II may not be the most modern hotel in Alvor, but its location on one of the Algarve’s best beaches, and its great value for money, makes it a super choice for a beach holiday in the Algarve.

You can choose to stay in the hotel rooms, all of which have a sea-view, or if travelling with children, their two-bedroom villas are superb. I stayed in one of these with my family years ago and loved it. Having full access to all the hotel’s facilities, while enjoying the benefits of a beachfront villa, offers the best of both worlds.

3.  5-Star Martinhal Sagres Beach Family Resort, Sagres

best family resort on the Algarve

I was supposed to visit Martinhal Beach Resort over Easter holidays but unfortunately, like all overseas travel, it had to be cancelled. I have vowed to go back to what is regularly described as one the best family resorts in Europe.

Set within a protected natural park, this five-star hotel has luxurious townhouses and villas, some of which have their own private pool. Obviously five-star luxury resorts such as this come with an expensive price tag, but it is undoubtedly one of the best beach hotels on the Algarve for families.

4. 3-Star Dom Jose Beach Hotel, Quarteira

3-star hotel on the beach in the Algarve

If you are looking for a five-star location, on a three-star budget, then look no further than The Dom Jose Beach Hotel. Located in Quarteira and just five minutes drive from the upmarket resort of Vilamoura, this offers a beach front location with easy access to shops, restaurans and bars.

If you like a nice evening walk, you will love the promenade that leads all the way into Vilamoura’s marina. Recently refurbished with a prime beach front location, this offers superb value for a highly rated beach hotel on the Algarve.

5.  5-Star Grand Real Santa Eulalia Hotel and Apartments, Albufeira

5-star hotels on the beach in the Algarve

The Grand Real Santa Eulalia’s close proximity to Albufeira, as well as its stunning cliff top location, has made it a firm favourite with Irish holiday makers for many years. It is ideal for families or couples, with a host of facilities and room types to suit everyone. Although a luxurious resort hotel, it tends to be more reasonably priced than other 5-star beach hotels in the Algarve, and the self catering apartments are particularly good value for families.

6. 4-Star PortoBay Falésia Hotel, Olhos de Agua

4-star beach hotels in the Algarve

This popular hotel offers direct access to the beautiful 8km beach of Praia da Falesia. Located in the pretty town Olhos de Agua,  yet close enough to the lively resort Albufeira, it offers the bets of both worlds. There is a choice dining options and bars if you prefer to stay on site, as well as a spa that offers outdoor treatments.

7.  5-Star Tivoli Marina Hotel, Vilamoura

best beach hotels on the Algarve - Tivoli Marina

Location, location, location – it doesn’t get much better than the Tivoli Marina Hotel. With the glitz and glamour of the Vilamoura Marina on one side, and its own concessioned beach on the other, everything you could possibly want is on your doorstep. The hotel also boasts a luxury Spa and a host of top class restaurants and bars.

8.  5-Star Dunas Douradas Beach Club, Vale do Lobo

best beach club in the Algarve

Located between the upmarket resorts of Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo, the Dunas Douradas Beach Club offers 132 apartments and villas which are ideal for a luxurious family holiday or group golfing trip. Overlooking the sea, with miles of golden sand right in front of you, its situation is superb.

Along with some excellent culinary experiences, the Dunas Douradas Beach Club also has a focus on fitness. There are indoor and outdoor pools, gym courses and plenty of golf options available. Children are well looked after too, and there is a kids club for children aged 3-9 years.

9.  4- star Alfagar Apartments, Albufeira

best apartments in the algarve on the beach

With a great location overlooking the sea, and a host of family-friendly facilities, it is not surprising that the Alfagar is one of the most popular self-catering properties in Albufeira. Located between the villages of Albufeira and Olhos de Água, you will find a host of shops, bars and restaurants to choose from.

There is a wide selection of swimming pools onsite, including a heated indoor pool and a separate waterpark area for kids, as well as a gym, tennis courts and a football pitch.

10. 5-Star Lake Spa Resort, Vilamoura

Best beach hotels in the Algarve - Lake Resort

I can’t write about beach hotels in the Algarve without mentioning the luxurious Lake Spa Resort. As well as being just a few steps away from Falésia beach, it also boasts a private sea water lake, and a swimming pool with a unique natural sand bottom – the first of its kind in Europe!

Its gardens are designed with plants from five continents, it boasts three restaurants, two bars, a Spa, Kids Club, and it also happens to be located beside Vilamoura’s famous marina – need I say more?

11. 5-Star Epic Sana Algarve Hotel, Albufeira

five star beach hotel in the algarve

Overlooking Falésia beach and close to Albufeira, the modern Epic Sana Hotel opened in 2013 to rave reviews. This modern hotel uses state-of-the-art technology in its spacious rooms and suites. There are five outdoor swimming pools, as well as an indoor pool with extensive Sayanna Wellness Center, making it an ideal choice for a summer or winter break.

Children are well catered for too with a Kid’s club, Games Room and multi-sport court. There is direct access to the 6km beach from the hotel via a wooden stairs.

Portugal Wins World’s Leading Destination at the World Travel Awards

I have visited Portugal many times so I was delighted to hear it won the World’s Leading Destination award at the prestigious World Travel Awards last week.

It is great to see Portugal being recognised with such an accolade, as well as Lisbon winning the world’s leading city break destination. While the Algarve is one of Ireland’s most popular destinations for holidaymakers, regular direct flights to Lisbon and Porto are making Portugal’s cities, firm favourites too. In fact passenger growth from Ireland has increased dramatically and now Ireland is considered one Portugal’s fastest growing markets. I am just back from a weekend in Porto and I loved it. The city of Porto is UNESCO World Heritage site, full of colourful buildings, delightful streets and has a great food and wine scene. If you haven’t already visited, read my blog on why you need to choose Porto for your next city break.

world travel awards

These awards are a fantastic achievement, particularly as Portugal is the first European country to win the World’s Leading Destination award. Portugal won Europe’s Leading Destination in September which automatically entered them into the final along with 17 other countries. It beat off competition from the USA, Brazil, as well as six time winners, Dubai, to win the coveted prize of at the World Travel Awards, on the 10th of November in Vietnam.

But that’s not all, Portugal also won 6 other awards:

– World’s Leading Tourist Board for Turismo de Portugal
– World’s Leading Tourism Authority Website for Visit Portugal
– World’s Leading Island Destination 2017 for Visitmadeiraofficial
– World’s Leading City Break Destination 2017 for Visit Lisboa
– World’s Leading Conservation Company 2017 for Parques de Sintra
– World’s Leading Luxury Leisure Resort 2017 for Pine Cliffs, a Luxury Collection Resort

world travel awards

Ana Mendes Godinho, Secretary of State for Tourism said, “It is the acknowledgment of the country that we have. An authentic, innovative, reinvented country that combines a wide variety of experiences and landscapes, a country that combines cosmopolitanism, history, tradition, sun, nature and gastronomy. A country that knows and enjoys to welcome everyone. We must now continue this work of showing all the diversity of what Portugal has to offer and which makes us a tourism destination of excellence”.

So if you haven’t already visited Portugal, go see it in 2018!

Travel Tips for travelling with kids.

 1. Make sure the holiday you are booking offers facilities that suit you.

Different age groups have different priorities. You will find with younger kids a pool or mini disco might be the most important thing, with teenagers it could be free wifi. Remember also to check the season and weather for the destination you are going to, there is a reason why prices to the Algarve are very reasonable in November, you may not get any sun!

Top tips for travelling with kids as discussed for family holidays on TV3

2. Choose your flights wisely

Short flights are handy when kids are crawling or too young to watch tv or play with tablets. Otherwise, I would say don’t let a longer flying time put you off. Kids can watch movies and easily amuse themselves for longer journeys now. Also bear in mind airport transfer times. Northern Majorca or Western Algarve can have two hour airport transfer, Lanzarote for instance might be a longer flight, but the airport transfer time to the main resort, Puerto del Carmen, is only 15 minutes.

If travelling long haul, especially to the USA – pay the extra cost and go direct. Clearing immigration in Ireland will mean when you arrive (tired ) you don’t have to queue to go through customs. You also wont have the stress of missing connections and your bags not arriving, which happened to me twice recently via London. I should have remembered that #smartfliesaerlingus! If there are no direct flights available, give yourself loads of connecting time.

Top tips for travelling with kids as discussed for family holidays on TV3

3. Buy a mediashare – Approx €30.

This was a life saver on our recent family holiday. The Verbatim MEDIA SHARE creates an ad-hoc wifi network of its own so the kids can watch movies at any time on their tablets or phones. Simply put movies on a USB stick or and SD card and plug them in. Install the MediaShare app from the Google Play or Apple App store. Open it, find the Media share device and click on the movie you wish to watch. The device can support up to five devices watching different movies at the one time. You no longer need to bring a portable DVD player and lots of discs. I have used the device in lots of hotel rooms and restaurants when the kids get bored. I will have a full review on this device in my new ‘News & Reviews’ section which will focus on great devices for the twenty first century traveller. Here is a video from the company showing how it all works

4. Bring supplies

Check before you go and if the beach is stoney, bring surf shoes. If you are likely to have mosquitoes, bring bug bands or deet sprays. If the weather is particularly hot, surf tops are ideal to save you worrying about kids getting burnt. If driving, going on a boat or a theme park with rollercoasters, bring seabands. My kids used them for our recent road trip and I found them great.

Easter Breaks, As Seen On TV3’s Sunday AM

The-Travel-Expert-As-Seen-on-TV3

Still wondering what to do during the Easter holidays? Here are my my top picks for Easter breaks as seen on TV3’s Sunday AM.

Easter holidays are particularly long this year with schools closing for almost three weeks. Many families are taking the opportunity to travel long-haul, either to relatives living abroad or to bucket list family holiday destinations, like Florida. The good news is that because the break is so long there is no peak date for short-haul holidays. Some are travelling over Patrick’s Day and coming home for Easter and therefore the peak Easter week isn’t sold out like previous years. So if you are thinking of a last minute get away, there is still availability and the prices might surprise you . Check out my top pics below.

Facebook follow TV3 long

Algarve 27th March, 7 Nights €369 per person; 2adults & 2children €1438

If you are looking for a good value break at Easter, it is hard to beat the Algarve. Prices flying on Easter Sunday are low and you can get a week in a popular family run hotel near Albuferia, for €369 per person. The Aguamarinha hotel gets great reviews on tripadvisor and was awarded a certificate of excellence. If you are afraid you wont get the weather, temperatures last year were as high as 27 degrees at that time and average temperatures over the past few years are about 19 degrees. If you want to bring the kids the 4* Paraiso in Albufeira are a good choice, price for 2 adults and 2 children is €1438 including flights. If you can take an extra days holiday and stay for 8 nights, the price is much lower, 2 sharing is €282 and 2 adults & 2 children is €1085 , both departing on the 27th of April and returning Monday the 4th of April.

Lanzarote 26th March, 7 Nights €519, 2 adults & 2children €1716

If you want to be guaranteed the weather then the Canary Islands are probably your best bet. Topflight still have availability to Lanzarote, flying out on Easter Saturday. A week in a two bedroomed apartment in Puerto del Carmen is €1716, based on 2 adults and 2 children, or €519 based on 2 sharing. This includes Aer Lingus flights, baggage and transfers too. Topflight also have deals to Lake Garda and the ski slopes if you fancy something a little different.

Family Holiday in the Algarve, 2nd July, 2ad & 2ch, 1 week, €1870!

Family Holiday

Get the Summer holidays off to a flying start and take a family holiday in the Algarve!

Spend time on some of Europe’s best beaches, explore the old towns or enjoy the cosmopolitan marinas – the Algarve ticks all boxes. Take the kids to one of the many waterparks or explore the fantastic Zoomarine, complete with animal shows and a splash park. There are many resorts to choose from, I have chosen one of the biggest towns on the Algarve Portimao.

Portimao is a wonderful combination of old and new. You will find everything from trendy high street stores to local souvenir shops. The old quarter is full of character and houses some excellent restaurants serving typical Portuguese cuisine. At the waterfront, the marina is full of luxury yachts and modern eateries.

The spacious Presidente apartments are primely located, over looking the beach between Portimao and Praia da Rocha. The They offer the best of both worlds, quietly located, but within easy reach of restaurants bars and nightlife of the neighbouring resorts. These basic apartments receive excellent reviews on tripadvisor and people love the warm friendly service they received from the owners. The large balconies over looking the sea and the idyllic location were also mentioned.

Top Ten Holiday Destinations in 2016

m4WjQG1451120576

With the recession well and truly over and Dublin airport celebrating their best ever year in 2015, travel agents and airlines are predicting that 2016 will be even better. So where are the hot spots?

It looks like old favourites such as Spain and Portugal will be the most attractive short haul holiday destinations in 2016. Although France will be busy for Euro 2016, many families who enjoyed their Summer holiday camping in France, may decide to switch to campsites near Salou in Spain or Lake Garda in Italy. Cuba, Mexico and Thailand will prove popular for long haul travel as the poor exchange rate with the US dollar is unlikely to change. Here are my top ten holiday destinations in 2016!

Majorca & Menorca

To put it simply, Irish people love Spain! Almost 1.5 million Irish holiday makers visited Spain this year and this is sure to grow again in 2016. The Balearic island of Majorca is constantly one of the favourites. The mixture of family resorts, lively nightlife and stunning scenery is a great combination and ensures Majorca offers something for everyone.

Direct flights to  Menorca were reintroduced last year from Ireland and proved to be a great success. So much so, that an extra flight from Cork has been added for 2016. This smaller and less commercialised island oozes character and is the perfect choice for families looking for a quiet, relaxing holiday in safe surroundings.

Menorca, one of the top ten holiday destinations for 2016 by The Travel Expert

Lake Garda

Although always popular from Ireland, I believe many families will switch from France to Lake Garda this year making the popular Italian resort busier than ever. There are direct flights to Verona and the nearby resort of Peschiera offers plenty of campsite and hotel options. The fact that the award winning themepark,  Gardaland is on it’s doorstep, will add to it’s popularity.

Lake Garda, one of the top ten holiday destinations for 2016 by The Travel Expert

Thailand

Thailand still offers fantastic value for money for a longhaul destination. There are numerous flights via the UK, Dubai and mainland Europe to Bangkok and Phuket. A one week package is circa €800 including flights and hotel, proving to be a great option for those looking for a touch of exotic, without the expensive price tag.

Athens & the Greek Islands

Always great value for money and appealing to everyone, the Greek islands will continue to be popular in 2016. There are direct flights to Zakynthos, Corfu, Crete, Rhodes and Kos and extra flights to Athens with Ryanair and Aegean air. This should open up Athens as a top city break destination and allow the bucket list destinations of Santorini and Mykonos to be serviced for the first time.

Santorini, one of the top ten holiday destinations for 2016 by The Travel Expert

Algarve

Another Irish favourite, the Algarve has almost twenty flights per week in the peak Summer months. The low priced airfares mixed with numerous resort options, will ensure that the Algarve will attract many Irish visitors in 2016.

Mexico

June 2016 will bring the first direct flights to Mexico for many years. The Thomson dreamliner aircraft will fly every fortnight to Cancun from Dublin and is bound to attract couples and honeymooners looking for the luxury all inclusive holiday resort.

Mexico, one of the top ten holiday destinations for 2016 by The Travel Expert

Iceland

WOW air introduced flights to Reykjavik in 2015 which proved a great success. People chased the Northern lights and swam in the Blue Lagoon, with lots of positive reviews. It looks like Iceland will remain popular in 2016 for weekend breaks and as a holiday destination.

Cuba

Diplomatic relations between the USA and Cuba are at an all time high and it is likely that more and more Americans will travel to Cuba over the coming years. Many people feel they such see it before it receives the Disney effect! For this reason and the fact that there is more disposable income around, Cuba looks like it could attract many Irish holidaymakers looking to travel long haul in 2016.

Cuba, one of the top ten holiday destinations for 2016 by The Travel Expert

Croatia

For those looking for somewhere a little different but still close to home, Croatia will be a top choice. The stunning city of Dubrovnik and the introduction of flights to Zadar and Pula will ensure that there are plenty of options for Irish holidymakers in 2016. The proximity to Lonely Planet’s top destination to visit in 2016 (Kotor in Montenegro) will also add to the appeal.

Dubrovnik, one of the top ten holiday destinations for 2016 by The Travel Expert

Dubai

With four direct flights every day, it is almost impossible to avoid seeing this world class holiday destination on travel agency windows and media outlets, all offering amazing deals to Dubai. With the loss of direct flights to Egypt and Tunisia, Dubai is also an excellent alternative for anyone looking for some Winter / Spring sunshine.

4* Family Holiday in the Algarve with flights, 2ad&2ch €1516

The travel expert 2

The Algarve has been a firm favourite with Irish holidaymakers for many years. It’s stunning beaches, low cost of living and relaxed pace has made it particularly popular with families.

Sunway have added an extra flight every Friday to the Algarve for the summer months and their package deals are particularly good value. Bear in mind with a package holiday there are no hidden extras, each person has a 20kg baggage allowance and airport transfers and local taxes are included in the price. Ive chosen the pretty resort of Carvoeiro from their selection of resorts as it is the perfect spot for those looking for a quiet family holiday, but with easy access to enjoy what the Algarve has to offer. Situated almost half way between Faro airport and the far west coast you can travel easily to Alvor or Albufeira and explore both sides, only 15 minutes away. There are two waterparks close by as well as the popular ZOO marine theme park, suffice to say there is plenty to keep the little ones happy.

Sarah Slattery, The Travel Expert on family holidays in the Algarve

The resort itself is very pretty, once an old fishing village, it still retains authenticity yet has developed to a top Algarve destination. This compact resort has picture perfect white washed houses dotted along the coastline and is relatively unspoilt. There are numerous great restaurants here, and enough bars and shops to explore too. The small sheltered beach is perfectly situated beside the small town and there are some great bars and restaurants around the town square, perfect to relax in after your days sunbathing. If you want to venture outside the town ( I would recommend a car) there are some of the best beaches on the Algarve with dramatic cliff walks, only a short drive away.

Stay at the Colina da Lapa family apartments  which are the perfect choice for anyone looking for a relaxing family holiday in nice surroundings. These spacious, air conditioned apartments are very well equipped and are pleasantly situated amongst spectacular gardens. The service is excellent with many enjoying the on site bar and restaurant, there is also a local shop and restaurant only five minutes walk from the complex. A free shuttle bus operates daily to the local beach and town centre. The Colina da Lapa receive excellent reviews on tripadvisor as well as a certificate of excellence.

Prices for flights and seven nights accommodation start at €1516 for 2 adults and 2 children on the 19th of June, and many more dates are available throughout the summer months.
