I’ve compiled a full list of 5 star hotels in Ireland, and many feature personal reviews to help you plan your next break away.
I am often asked how many 5 star hotels are in Ireland, but it was only when I started to research this post that I realised there was over 45 of them! Apologies if I have excluded any hotels, but surprisingly there was no definitive list with all of the 5 star hotels in Ireland – well until now.
Guest writer Sarah Dunne from Teas, Trips & Travels has visited 14 of Ireland’s 5 star hotels, (clearly I need to up my game!), and Sarah kindly offered to share some of her personal reviews with me. Sarah has a Facebook and Instagram page where she shares her bucket list adventures and holiday activities at home and abroad.
I have completed the list with some of my own personal reviews, as well as many more 5 star hotels in Ireland that I have yet to visit. This post should list all of the 5 star hotels in Ireland, but please comment below or contact me if you spot any that I have omitted.
As there are 45 hotels on this list, if you are specifically looking for 5 star hotels in Dublin or 5 star hotels in Northern Ireland you can click on these links to bring you there directly.
Guest writer Sarah Dunne offers her personal reviews on these 5 star hotels in Ireland:
1. Glenlo Abbey Hotel, Galway
This 18th century hotel lies just outside Galway city. Glenlo Abbey combines contemporary elegance with old world charm, and I found (Sarah Dunne) the standard and service here is impeccable.
A friendly doorman greeted me upon check-in, and the same man very politely carried my luggage straight to the boot of my car at check-out. I made straight for Palmers Restaurant where I enjoyed delicious slow cooked brisket, and a basket of chips.
One of my favourite activities when staying in a 5 star hotel is to enjoy a movie at an in-house cinema. I was allowed to bring my ‘Mistletoe on the Rocks’ cocktail into the cinema with me, and a bucket of popcorn was also provided to all attendees.
Breakfast the following morning was one of the best I’ve ever had – they had their own honeycomb, which is one of my guilty pleasures. I managed to get a seat next to the window and I enjoyed a leisurely breakfast looking out onto the gardens.
My favourite room in the hotel was the reformed Abbey Room. I had the room to myself after breakfast. The fire was lit, the room was so peaceful, and I spent time admiring the stained glass window.
The hotel is also home to the Pullman Restaurant. Originally two Orient Express train carriages, this is a unique dining experience I’m sure.
Other activities include a 9-hole golf course, falconry and a choice of boat trips. We received top class service here in every aspect, Glenlo Abbey is absolute perfection.
2. Adare Manor Hotel, Limerick
Adare Manor is a world class 5-star hotel located just outside Adare village in Limerick. It has won numerous awards, including the best resort in Europe and the 5th best resort in the world, in the Condé Nast Traveler Readers Choice Awards. Be prepared to be astonished by the 840 acres of pristine parkland, the lavish interiors and the award-winning spa.
I (Sarah Dunne) used to work in the town houses of Adare Manor many moons ago. I recall dreaming of being a guest there some day, and now I have stayed two times!
I was actually so bowled over by the attention the first time I stayed here, that I felt a little emotional. The luxury started before I even entered the hotel. There was valet parking, and the doorman escorted us to the reception desk to check-in.
Nothing is left to chance at Adare Manor. From pillow preferences to dining options, they anticipated our every need. This luxury five-star resort boasts the Michelin star restaurant, The Oak Room, as well as further dining options in the Tack Room and Carriage House, and Afternoon Tea menu in The Gallery.

As well as a pillow menu and valet service, you can expect fleece lined bathrobes, a complimentary fridge of treats and soft drinks, full-sized toiletries, and free movies on your TV.
You can enjoy activities such as the Spa, gym and swimming pool, but also outdoor pursuits such as golf, fishing, bike rides and falconry. They have recently added the Padel Club where you can take technical golf lessons in the Sports Simulation room.
However, simply walking around the grounds is pretty special too. I have nothing but praise for this hotel, its management and staff – it is without a doubt one of the best 5 star hotels in Ireland.
3. Ashford Castle, Mayo
800 year old Ashford Castle in Mayo is a little piece of heaven. Awarded the accolade as a National Geographic Unique Lodge of the World, Ashford castle is undoubtedly one of the best hotels in Ireland. I (Sarah Dunne) stayed here last December and was very fortunate to see its gorgeous Christmas décor. At check-in, there was mulled wine, soft drinks and mince pies for every guest.
View this post on Instagram
This hotel oozes old world elegance, but the absolute highlight for me was the wonderful welcoming staff – nothing is too much trouble. I stayed in a Lake Corrib room – the best value room, which had all the mod cons like underfloor heating, automatic blinds and Egyptian cotton bedding.
What particularly stood out for me was when I came back to my room after enjoying an in-house movie in the cinema, the turndown staff had lit candles on my bath, placed my slippers beside my bed, and left complimentary chocolates on my pillow.
The two resident Irish Wolfhounds – brothers Cronan’ and Garvan trotted along with their handler into the castle every morning, and I enjoyed taking photos with them and petting them.
There are many activities to enjoy on site including boating, ziplining, falconry and cycling, as well as the cinema – where popcorn is delivered straight to your chair. A stay at Ashford Castle is truly a royal adventure.

4. Muckross Park Hotel & Spa, Kerry
Killarney has so many excellent luxury hotels, but without a doubt my (Sarah Dunne) favourite is Muckross Park Hotel. This hotel perfectly balances 18th century style with 21st century splendour.
Our bedroom was bright and airy, the bathroom sink was adorned with Orla Kiely toiletries, while the Gothic-style Spa has one of the best pools and Jacuzzis I’ve been in. It also happens to have an outdoor hot tub.
In the restaurant, I chose the Supreme of Irish Chicken – it was delicious. Breakfast was equally good with a top notch Eggs Benedict, my breakfast favourite.
The hotel is in the perfect location to explore the National Park and Muckross House. They also have the option to book two-bedroom apartments that accommodate up to five guests.
The award-winning Spa at Muckross boasts as Vitality Suite, thermal area, herbal sauna, steam room, outdoor hot tub, as well as a wide variety of treatment options.
Considering its 5-star rating and that it is one of the best spa hotels in Ireland it offers surprisingly good value. Muckross Park was the most perfect getaway, I have nothing but compliments for this hotel.

5. Powerscourt Hotel, Wicklow
Powerscourt Hotel is a stunning property set in the historic Powerscourt Estate in Enniskerry, Co. Wicklow. Powerscourt features Palladian-style architecture, with tasteful decor throughout, however the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming.
We (Sarah Dunne) enjoyed dinner in Powerscourt’s traditional pub, McGills – which served tasty pub grub. There is also fine dining available in Sika restaurant. We had a delicious breakfast here, where I had another superb Eggs Benedict.
Amenities at the hotel include a luxury Spa, Leisure Club with swimming pool, and outdoor activities such as falconry, complimentary bikes for cycling around the estate, and of course, it’s famous Golf course. Powerscourt Waterfall is just minutes away and a must visit.
6. Hayfield Manor, Cork
Hayfield Manor is a family owned boutique hotel centrally located in a quiet area of Cork city, and in my opinion, a true haven from home.
I (Sarah Dunne) received a fabulous warm welcome and was upgraded from a Manor to a Superior Room which was a wonderful surprise!
I took a chance and booked my first ever Solo Afternoon Tea. I asked for a quiet corner of the restaurant, and I was granted a whole area to myself in the Conservatory of Perrotts Garden Bistro.
The foyer provided a wonderful relaxed ambience, and was the perfect place to enjoy a cocktail. The Drawing Room and The Library were also room favourites of mine.
The Beautique Spa was actually the first Elemis brand Spa in Ireland and the full treatment menu is non gender specific.
Everything about this Cork hotel exceeded my expectations, including the staff. My only regret was that my stay was only for one night.
7. The Europe Hotel, Kerry
I (Sarah Dunne) had the pleasure of staying one night at the sublime Europe Hotel, which is located in Fossa, an 11 minute drive from Killarney. A picture perfect view of the MacGillycuddy Reeks mountain range awaited us, and this view alone – especially when reflected perfectly off the lake, was worth every penny.
There is an airy relaxed atmosphere throughout the hotel. The hotel boasts 187 bedrooms and suites and we stayed in a Superior Lakeview Room.
We had a very tasty lunch in the Brasserie while we waited for our room to be ready. I had the Croque Monsieur followed by a tasty Garganelli Pasta.
This casual dining restaurant is open from 11am-11pm daily and also has an outdoor terrace which is very popular. Other dining options at the hotel include the Panorama restaurant which has a Fine Dining Menu, and Riva restaurant which has a more Mediterranean twist.
Onsite facilities here include a luxury ESPA with thermal suite, boating, fishing and complimentary horse riding. Well done to the management and staff here, they were always attentive and made us feel like royalty.
8. Castlemartyr Resort Hotel, Cork
Castlemartyr resort is made up of a 17th Century Manor House adjacent to the ruins of an 800yr old castle in East Cork. The hotel boasts 108 bedrooms and 36 luxury holiday homes. I (Sarah Dunne) stayed in one of the Deluxe rooms which was spotlessly clean, comfortable and modern.
Read: Hotels in Ireland with lodges – my top 20 picks.
We enjoyed Afternoon Tea in the Knights in the Manor House. We had the perfect spot next to the large window where we were able to observe a wedding ceremony taking place in the manicured garden, it was beautiful. Afternoon Tea is available Wednesday-Sunday, they also offer Gluten Free Afternoon Tea and a Children’s Afternoon Tea.
If I had one negative to say, it would be that check-in was quite slow, our room wasn’t ready for about two hours after the stated check-in time, but it gave us the opportunity to explore its beautiful gardens.
9. Lough Eske Castle, Donegal
Lough Eske Castle is steeped in history and romance. Dating back to the 15th century and set within 43 acres of native woodland on the shores of Lough Eske, it certainly has the wow factor. It blends its historic past with contemporary luxury beautifully, and has a luxury spa with a swimming pool for the ultimate relaxing break.
I (Sarah Dunne) stayed in a fabulous Deluxe Room which was spacious with elegant oak furniture. The hotel offers a complimentary daily history tour from the main reception area.
Activities at the hotel also include complimentary bike hire, fishing and the on-site Spa – CARA Organic Beauty. The castle grounds are great for exploring the lake and surroundings.
There are various dining options with Cedars Restaurant, The Father Browne Bar and the Gallery Bar. The food was absolutely gorgeous and exceeded expectations. Lough Eske Castle is also renowned for a great Afternoon Tea.
Situated at the Castle gates, is a second accommodation that I haven’t stayed in yet but is on my wish list – the Lake Lodge at Lough Eske. It’s a self catering private secluded hideaway. Guests of the cottage can also avail of the swimming pool, gym and bike hire at the Castle.
10. Lyrath Estate, Kilkenny
I (Sarah Dunne) stayed at the Lyrath for a mid-week retreat three years ago and my stay was absolutely fabulous from start to finish. It met all of my expectations of a five star hotel in Ireland and more. It is nestled amongst 170 acres of parkland yet only five minutes drive from Kilkenny City.
One of my favourite things about this hotel was its multi-award winning Spa. Oasis Spa offers the ultimate in luxurious treatments ranging from a Couples Experience to a selection of maternity massages and everything in between.
I was the first person in the Spa so I had the place more or less to myself for the duration of my time here. The hydrotherapy pool was one of the best I’ve been in. It looks onto the grounds with no glass separation, just me and the outside world – I’m pretty sure I dozed off for a few seconds! After my 25 minute facial, I had a detox juice and chilled out in the relaxation room.
I hired out a complimentary bike to cycle around the grounds. I couldn’t fault anything about Lyrath Estate, from the food to the service, I will definitely return.
11. The g Hotel, Galway
I (Sarah Dunne) celebrated my birthday at The g Hotel in 2018 and it was the perfect treat. I received the warmest of welcomes when I checked in, and found balloons, a card and cakes in my room, which was a wonderful gesture. The standard Deluxe bedrooms were modern and spacious.
The g has a completely different decor to a lot of other 5 star hotels in Ireland, but that’s one of the things I loved about it. It is loud and funky, but its modern decor is tasteful too.
ESPA at the g is Galway’s only 5-star Spa. Designed by Philip Treacy, this two storey Spa has a Thermal Suite as well as 12 treatment rooms, and a rooftop bamboo terrace. Our visit to the ESPA was a stellar experience. It was relaxing and tranquil and a great way to start off the morning.
I like to treat myself to Afternoon Tea regularly, and I loved some of the colourful and unusual treats that were included at The g.
The courteous staff are an absolute asset to the hotel and I could not have been happier with my stay here. The g also provides a valet car service. A stay here offers a great base to explore Galway City and the surrounding countryside.
12. Aghadoe Heights, Killarney, Kerry
The Aghadoe Heights Hotel is superbly located overlooking the Lakes of Killarney. I (Sarah Dunne) arrived an hour early to check-in, but our room was ready, so I was delighted. It had extremely comfortable beds, as well as a stand alone bath, shower, and a marble vanity unit stocked with Voya products. Our room set the tone for the rest of our stay.
The hotel boasts two restaurants, two bars, a leisure centre with swimming pool, and luxury spa. The Spa with thermal suites offers stunning lake views and has won numerous awards. The personal service by the attentive staff made me want to return, and with its own Helipad on site, maybe I’ll arrive in style next time!

13. Dromoland Castle, Clare
Dromoland Castle has been welcoming guests since the 16th century. There is a feeling of being transported back in time here, where you live like a Lord or Lady in your castle. Check-in was seamless and I (Sarah Dunne) was upgraded to a Deluxe room as it was a relatively quiet period.
There are lots of activities to enjoy, including walks around the extensive manicured grounds, cycling, golf, tennis, falconry as well as a luxury Spa. Afternoon Tea here in Dromoland Castle is so good I’ve had it here several times!
The Spa at Dromoland Castle is also well worth booking into. It comprises of six luxurious treatment rooms and one of the best Relaxation rooms I’ve ever been in. For the ultimate indulgence try the Royal Retreat treatment – it is divine.
I hope you enjoyed my reviews on some of my favourite 5 star hotels in Ireland. There are many more 5 star hotels that I haven’t stayed in yet, but The Travel Expert has listed them all for you below.

14 The Cliff House, Waterford
View this post on Instagram
The Cliff House Hotel is regarded by many as one of the best 5 star hotels in Ireland and I couldn’t agree more. This boutique hotel in the small fishing village of Ardmore has only 39 rooms. While it doesn’t offer the grandeur or elegance of one of Ireland’s large castle hotels, it is the ultimate romantic hideaway.
I had a superb meal in its Michelin-star restaurant – in fact it one of the best meals I have ever eaten. I only wish I had time to enjoy the swimming pool and spa too. Its setting, perched on a cliff over looking the Irish Sea is absolutely breathtaking.
All rooms have sea-views and are beautifully appointed, but if you really want to push the boat out, the split-level Cliff Veranda Suites are spectacular. The living area is on the ground floor and the bedroom is upstairs with a dramatic cliffside location. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors open on to a large private veranda, with ocean views and comfortable sun loungers.
15. Mount Juliet, Kilkenny
View this post on Instagram
We enjoyed a family stay in Mount Juliet last summer and loved it. We stayed in the luxurious Manor House, which is situated on a ridge overlooking the River Nore, with 500 acres of woodlands, parks and gardens. Mount Juliet also boasts a Michelin Star Restaurant – The Lady Helen, as well as a pool, spa and a stunning walled garden.
We stayed in one of the Manor House garden rooms, however, Hunters Yard offers more modern and reasonably priced rooms. You can also enjoy more informal dining at The Hound restaurant at Hunter’s Yard, as well as Afternoon Tea at the Manor House.

23. Ballyfin Demesne, Laois
When it comes to luxury hotels in Ireland, Ballyfin Demense tops the list every time! It was also voted one of the best hotels in the world by Condé Nast Traveler. According to Richard E Grant “it was like stepping back in the past without the inconvenience of no electricity. The personal attention…the welcome of the people, the setting, the food, I should be their PR manager” – I think that says it all.

The Dunloe Hotel and Gardens is a recent addition to my Irish bucket list and must be one of the best luxury hotels in Ireland for families. As well as 64 acres to explore, there is a wonderful outdoor adventure playground on the hotel grounds.
Families can also enjoy kayaking on the river that flows through the estate, as well as complimentary pony trekking, tennis and fishing. If you are lucky to catch something, the kitchen will be pleased to prepare and cook your catch for dinner that evening.
During the summer two popular movies are shown each night, suitable for children of all ages. Popcorn and drinks are provided.
The hotel has large family rooms that can accommodate two adults and three children, which consist of a double room with balcony and a separate room for children via an internal interconnecting door. This room can not be reached from the hotel corridor – I love this idea for families who want separate rooms but are nervous about outside access.
This hotel is pet-friendly too.
26. Trump International Doonbeg, Clare
