Where to Stay in Lisbon – My Top Picks of 3, 4 & 5-Star Lisbon Hotels & Apartments

Lisbon Portugal

Planning a city break to Lisbon but not sure where to stay?  I’ve hand-picked highly rated Lisbon Hotels to help you make the most of this charming city.

A beautiful coastal city built on seven hills, renowned for terrific sightseeing and a great food scene, it’s not surprising that Lisbon is one of Europe’s top city break destinations. However, choosing where to stay is not easy – but don’t panic, I have done all the hard work for you. I have some great Lisbon hotels and apartments in various parts of the city below, including luxury apartments for families.

Each area of Lisbon has its own unique charm and is easily accessible on foot, or by the classic old trams. The trendy Bairro Alto and Chiado areas are packed with al-fresco eateries and late night bars, while the medieval Alfama district offers the best sunset views over the Castelo de São Jorge and Lisbon’s colourful buildings.

However, these areas are the most expensive to stay in. The more modern shopping area near Avenida da Liberdade has larger and more inexpensive hotels. I have no doubt there are Lisbon hotels here to suit all tastes and budgets.

Best for families in Lisbon – Martinhal Chiado

family holiday in Lisbon

I travel a lot on city breaks with my children and usually find apartments the most convenient to stay in. However, I have yet to find city apartments as good for families as Martinhal Chiado. Officially a 5-star hotel, you have all the benefits of self-catering, with the amenities and service of a luxury hotel.

Martinhal Resorts were specifically designed with families in mind and are without a doubt some of best luxury family resorts in Europe. There are two resorts on the Algarve, one in Cascais, as well as Martinhal Chiado in the heart of Lisbon.

The location in Lisbon’s trendy Chiado district is superb – you are right in the centre of Lisbon’s old town and within walking distance to the main square and coast. But it is the spacious apartments and family facilities that set Martinhal Chiado apart from the rest.

There are no sharp edges on the furniture, child steps, potties and even nappy bins in the bathrooms, handy hooks so kids clothes are not left lying around – to say the apartments are well equipped for families is a massive understatement!

Martinhal Chiado has a baby concierge service, so everything from high chairs, to sterilisers and even buggies, can be pre booked in advance. There is a kids club onsite, that also offers evening sessions so you can enjoy a night out in this vibrant city.

The apartments are set in three old listed buildings, and the interiors blend perfectly to give a sophisticated yet understated feel. Rooms are very spacious and there is a selection of room types to choose from, all equipped with every possible child’s need.  If you are looking for a luxury stay in Lisbon, that caters exceptionally well for families – look no further.
