The Absolute Guide to Las Vegas

the absolute guide to las vegas

I am often asked to write a guide to Las Vegas with recommendations about what to do and where to stay. Unfortunately I haven’t visited Las Vegas yet so I had to ask for help…

I spoke to Ciaran Mulligan A.K.A THE FABULOUS TRAVELLER, because he has been to Vegas a staggering eight times! He kindly wrote this blog post for me with some great tips on where to stay, where to eat, as well as his list of the top 10 things to do in Las Vegas. So this is your absolute guide to Las Vegas. Make sure you bookmark or pin it if you are planning a trip!

My favourite Las Vegas hotels are :

1 The Cosmopolitan Hotel

I just love this hotel, with amazing rooms, decor and great atmosphere. The hotel also has great pool areas, a great gym and a fabulous spa.  The best breakfast/ brunch buffet in Vegas is at The Wicked Spoon in the Cosmopolitan Hotel.

2 The Aria Hotel

Next door to the Cosmopolitan, this is a nice contemporary hotel and very spacious.

3 The Bellagio

At the centre of the strip with its famous water fountains, this is another popular hotel.

3. Wynn or Encore Hotel

Opposite the fashion mall which is great for shopping.

5. The Venetian or Palazzo

Complete with indoor gondolas giving you a taste of Venice.

If you don’t want a casino in your hotel check out the Vdara hotel. If you are looking for good Las Vegas meeting spaces for conferences and events,  Westgate Resorts have several.

My favourite restaurants in Las Vegas are:

Tao at the Venetian hotel

(Thai) great food, good atmosphere and fab decor, prices $$$$, pop into Tao nightclub after!

STK at the Cosmopolitan

Try this if you like steak. It’s the sister restaurant of the fabulous STK in Manhattan

Prices: $$$$.

Mon Gabi at the Paris Hotel

This is great for steaks and French cuisine. I always ask for the  balcony table sitting outside and enjoy the whole atmosphere of the strip.
Prices $$$.

Todd English’s Olives at the Bellagio

Great if you want a nice lunch. Ask for a balcony table so you can enjoy the water fountains while you eat.
Prices $$$-$$$$!

Lemongrass at the Aria Hotel

If you like traditional Thai dishes but with a contemporary decor. Great food and amazing service.
Prices $$$

My top 10 things to do in Las Vegas are:

1. Helicopter Ride to the Grand Canyon with Papillon Helicopters

It’s just wow flying into the Grand Canyon along the Colorado river, landing and having breakfast in the Grand Canyon. Absolutely Fabulous!

2. Take in a Show or Concert.

There are many options here but by far my favourite shows are the Cirque Du Soleil shows. My favourite is Beatles Love at the Mirage followed by Michael Jackson‘s ‘One’ at the Mandalay Bay, La Reve at the Wynn and O at the Bellagio. There are also many top artists resident at Las Vegas at different times such as Elton John, Celine DionLionel Richie, Britney, J Lo and Bruno Mars.

3. Slotzilla Zip line at Fremont Street

Take Slotzilla Zip line the full length of Fremont Street, zooming by everyone below, flying like superman. This is great fun and suitable for most ages! Enjoy the madness of Fremont Street after the Zip Line.

4. Night time Helicopter Ride.

Take a nighttime helicopter ride around the strip with Maverick Helicopters. The ride takes about 15 minutes as you travel down the strip flying around the Stratosphere hotel and back up the strip, passing by your hotel and catching the lights at night.

5. Siegfried & Roy secret gardens at the Mirage hotel.

This is like a zoo type animal enclosure including a dolphin habitat. You can swim with dolphins or visit lions and panthers in their habitat.

6. Mob Museum

Just off Fremont street go visit the mob museum. The history of Vegas with the comings and goings of the mob and celebrities from the 1920s through to the current day. This is really interesting and definitely worth a visit.

7. High Roller at the LINQ hotel.

This big wheel which is 550 ft tall is fairly new to the strip and is similar to the London eye, except bigger. You can either go into a capsule without a bar or with a bar for an extra few dollars. My recommendation is go with the bar capsule where you get free drinks/cocktails for the length of time the wheel goes around which is approx 30 mins.

8. Fashion Mall

Located opposite the Wynn Hotel, this Mall has got all the shops you want including Macy’s, Abercrombie, Hollister and more. You can also take a trip to the outlets which are about 15-20 mins taxi ride away for more bargains.

9. Spa treatments

Check out the spa treatments in the Sahra spa in the Cosmopolitan hotel. Little pricey but worth the pampering! Also check if your own hotel has a spa and see what treatments you can get.

10. Stratosphere thrill rides hotel.

Scary rides off the top of the Stratosphere hotel including a sky jump. The rides include Big Shot, Insanity and X scream in which you are hanging over the side of the hotel.

You will love Vegas if you like fun. Hopefully my absolute guide to Las Vegas will help you make the most of your trip!
