However, it’s not just the destinations that make Uniworld River Cruises so special.

Expect the finest quality linens, marble bathrooms stocked with l’Occitane and Hermès products, TVs built into mirrors, and a pillow menu featuring five options. You can also enjoy state-of-the-art gyms, yoga and TRX fitness classes, fully-equipped spas and heated swimming pools. “No request too large, no detail too small” is the motto of the Uniworld staff, so prepare to be pampered! Select Hotels of Ireland Launches New Website

Tired of the large hotel chains with expensive room rates? Want a staycation filled with traditional Irish hospitality? From the Dingle Skellig Hotel to Actons of Kinsale, Select Hotels of Ireland is a group of 30 independent Irish hotels, bookable on one great website.

Select Hotels of Ireland are renowned for their great service, quality food and high standards of accommodation. You can also expect a warm Irish welcome and a full Irish breakfast. There are many different hotels to choose from, across various cities and counties in Ireland. Select Hotels of Ireland offer family breaks in self catering lodges, Christmas and New Year offers and group tours.

I have listed some of my favourite hotels from the Select Hotels of Ireland website below, but there are many more to choose from. If my personal picks don’t suit you, you can see all 30 hotels on Select Hotels of Ireland new website, or why not call the Central Reservations Office and let their expert staff find the perfect hotel to suit you.

Actons Hotel Kinsale, Cork

With a yacht-filled harbour, cobbled-stone streets and delightful dining options, it’s not surprising that colourful Kinsale is one of Ireland’s most popular port towns. It was also voted Ireland’s top foodie town last year.

Kinsale’s landmark hotel, Actons, is an excellent place to stay according to TripAdvisor, and I second that! I love Actons’ home from home atmosphere – in fact this embodies what Select Hotels of Ireland is all about. This boutique hotel offers some excellent dining options, as well as a health and leisure club with a gym, a 15-metre swimming pool, sauna and steam room.

Dingle Skellig Hotel, Kerry

The Dingle Peninsula is full of exciting places to explore. The Slay Head Drive is probably one of Irealnd’s best coastal drives, with Gallarus Oratory and Coumeenole Beach just some of the highlights. You must also take time to see Fungi, the resident dolphin, and catch some traditional music in one of the many pubs that line Main Street.

The Dingle Skellig Hotel is superbly situated overlooking Dingle Bay and is an ideal choice to explore this beautiful peninsula. The hotel also has a leisure club, swimming pool, spa, and outdoor hot tub – so if you just want to relax, you can do that too! Rated excellent on TripAdvisor, this must be one of the best places to stay in Dingle.

Wyatt Hotel Westport, Mayo

Westport is a delightful town, so much so that you may not want to leave it! However, it is a shame not to explore Mayo’s beautiful coastline. Pay a visit to Achill Island and marvel at Keem Bay. If weather permits, why not cycle there on the Great Western Greenway bike trail?

I have chosen the boutique hotel Wyatt, which is superbly located in the heart of Westport. The Wyatt has a traditional Irish bar, an upmarket brasserie, an award-winning restaurant, and offers access to the 4-star Westport Leisure Park during your stay. It also happens to be Westport’s only Dog Friendly Hotel! Rated as excellent on TripAdvisor, a stay at the Wyatt is sure to please.

Clifden Station House Hotel, Galway

This unique hotel was once an old railway station. It has been beautifully restored and manages to combine the old brick and native oak with modern furnishings. Its location in the upmarket town of Clifden is ideal for anyone who wants shops, bars and restaurants close by, but also wants to get out and about and explore the rugged coastline of Connemara. Rated as excellent on TripAdvisor, you will also find a spa and leisure centre with an indoor swimming pool. Families are well catered for too, as children under 12 stay free when sharing with adults. There is also a free kids club throughout the school holidays.

Talbot Hotel Wexford & Talbot Suites Stonebridge, Wexford

The Talbot Hotel Wexford is located right in the heart of Wexford Town and boasts a fully equipped leisure centre and swimming pool. The Talbot Hotel Wexford is part of The Talbot Collection, which also includes Talbot Hotel Stillorgan, Oriel House Hotel and the Midleton Park Hotel. It has recently added the luxurious Talbot Suites at Stonebridge to its collection – a super choice for groups or families looking for large apartments in the heart of the city. There are 73 luxury two- and three-bedroom apartments available, with floor-to-ceiling windows, high gloss fully equipped kitchen, TV’s in all living areas and bedrooms, and all have access to the Talbot Quay Leisure Centre. Rated number 1 on TripAdvisor – these are a super addition to the Select Hotels of Ireland portfolio.

Collect Triple Avios via the AerClub eStore in Apple, Arnotts, Brown Thomas, M&S & More…

Christmas shopping online? Collect triple or double Avios on over 100 retailers via the AerClub eStore right now!

I find shopping is the best way to boost my Avios balance, especially in the lead up to Christmas. I was so excited to learn that my favourite department stores Arnotts and Brown Thomas are now available to shop via the AerClub estore, and that I can collect 12 Avios for every €1 I spend!

The normal redemption rate is 4 Avios for every €1 spent with both retailers, but from now until the 22nd of December you will collect triple Avios from Brown Thomas, Arnotts and six other retailers – they are listed below. There are also over 100 retailers offering Double Avios via the AerClub eStore, including Eason,, Nike, and AliExpress. Suffice to say, don’t do any Christmas shopping until you check the AerClub eStore first.

ways to collect avios

Why collect Avios?

Once you accumulate Avios, you can use these to pay for reward flights, hotels, car hire and travel experiences. You can also use them to part-pay for Aer Lingus flights. So even if you have only accumulated 400 Avios, you can use these to get a discount off your next Aer Lingus flight.  See more ways to spend Avios here. and my beginners guide to AerClub here.

How to shop via the AerClub eStore

Shopping via the AerClub eStore couldn’t be easier. Once you are logged in to the AerClub eStore you can click through to your favourite retailers and shop online at no extra cost, but your purchases will be tracked, and your Avios account will be topped up with points. It really is that simple – you shop in exactly the same way as you would normally shop online, but the online shops will see that you came to their website via the AerClub estore. You can also see the stores you have clicked on in your history so you know your transaction is being tracked. And now with Christmas sales in full swing, you can collect DOUBLE or even TRIPLE Avios!

Get TRIPLE Avios via the AerClub eStore in these retailers and click here to shop all stores.

Arnotts: 12 Avios for every €1 spent

From lingerie to Lego, beauty to bedding, you name it, it’s for sale in Arnotts! Iconic toy store FAO Schwarz has recently opened in Arnotts too, so why not collect triple Avios while Christmas shopping for the kids.

New York & Orlando Holiday – Flights, Hotels & Car Hire, 10 Nights, Only €1499!

Orlando NYC

Visit two of America’s most iconic destinations on one memorable trip! Spend three nights in New York, before flying to the theme park capital of the world for seven nights. This New York and Orlando holiday is amazing value and is a great choice for families or couples.

I have teamed up with American Sky to bring you this amazing New York and Orlando holiday deal. The price of €1299 includes all flights, 10-nights hotel accommodation, and car hire in Orlando – can you believe the price? This includes savings of €200 per couple for bookings made by the 30th of November.

This New York and Orlando holiday is just a sample of what American Sky offer – they can tailor make any holiday to suit your requirements. If you would prefer to stay longer in New York, add in some beach time, or perhaps stop in New York on the way home, just talk to the team in American Sky and they will design the perfect holiday for you. You can also choose to upgrade your accommodation in New York or Orlando, depending on your budget.

american tours

I am a huge fan of New York, in fact it is probably my favourite city. I have visited many times, but every time I go back there is something new to see. I have so many great memories from my trips over the years – with and without kids. Times Square never gets old, no matter how many times you see it. Neither does the view of the skyline from the Top of the Rock. But wandering around the West Village or having a quiet brunch in the Boathouse in Central Park, are just as rewarding.

The 9/11 Memorial and Museum is extremely moving and must be seen. Weather permitting, a boat trip to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island is also some of my favourites. Of course no trip to New York would be complete without some shopping! I love that you can go designer shopping on Bloomingdales in the morning, and haggle for bargains in Chinatown in the afternoon. The outlets in Woodbury Common are also one of my favourite places to shop, but you need to allow a full day to visit it properly!

New York is one of those cities that caters equally for adults and children, so this New York and Orlando holiday is a great choice for family holiday too. I visited New York with my children last year and they loved it. They spent the whole time recognising places from their favourite TV shows and as for the food – they still talk about the size of the New York pizzas! You can read more things to do in New York in these posts:

Top Things to do in New York with Kids

new york and orlando holiday with kids

After a three-night stay in New York it is time to move on to Orlando – the theme park capital of the world. There are over 20 theme parks in Orlando, so if you want an action packed holiday – you’ve got it! Universal Studios is my personal favourite. I love the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and the simulator rides in Universal’s Islands of Adventure. If you are travelling with young children, you will have to bring them to Disney World. I will never forget the look on my daughter’s face when she saw Sleeping Beauty’s castle for the first time. Whether you are travelling as a couple or with kids, will probably determine what theme parks you visit. Talk to the experts in American Sky and they will advise you about the various theme parks to determine which best suit your family.

new york and orlando holiday

This New York and Orlando deal includes a seven-night stay in Orlando, so you will have plenty of time to visit some of the neighbouring attractions if you wish. The Kennedy Space Centre is only an hour’s drive from Orlando, as is Daytona Beach. Remember this deal includes car hire in Orlando too. If you are travelling with children or extended family, you may wish to change your hotel to one of American Sky’s holiday homes. You can also choose to extend your stay in Orlando or add on a few nights at the beach – just talk to the team in American Sky and they will organise this for you.

new york and orlando holiday

The price of €1499 per person includes all flights, accommodation, car hire in Orlando, and a discount of €180 per couple if booked by the 31st March. This offer is based on two sharing, so prices will be even less if travelling as a family! This New York and Orlando holiday is valid throughout 2020, but prices will increase during peak season.

Winter Wonderland at Center Parcs – Why You Should Visit & My Top Tips

alex-christmas-tree-center-parcs-compressor (1)

With 57,600 fairy lights, 90 Christmas trees and 3 tonnes of snow, you can imagine the excitement when we arrived to Winter Wonderland at Center Parcs Longford Forest.

‘It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas’ was on repeat on my Spotify playlist, and despite the fact that it was only the 8th of November, I was as excited as the kids! We were fortunate to be invited to Center Parcs Longford Forest for the opening in July, and after a fabulous few days we couldn’t wait to return. Temperatures in July were over 20 degrees. During Winter Wonderland at Center Parcs the average was only 4 degrees, but surprisingly that didn’t matter.

instagram center parcs

The outdoor swimming pool reminded me of the Blue Lagoon – the combination of the hot pool (29.5 degrees) against the crisp cold air was invigorating. Cycling around the resort was just as enjoyable as it was during the summer time, once we were wrapped up with hats and gloves. Even the biodegradable snow suited the temperatures perfectly!
winter wonderland at center parcs
All we could see from 5pm was thousands of fairy lights lighting up the resort. The whole village was illuminated – it was an amazing sight. Garlands filled with twinkling lights lined the lake, and massive Christmas baubles beamed in the village. The Christmas tree at Santa’s Woodland Workshop is 10 meters tall and has 4,450 lights! The whole experience was magical and one that all of us throughly enjoyed. It was, to coin the phrase from Center Parcs – Epic Family Time. As I write my my 12 top tips for visiting Winter Wonderland at Center Parcs, I am already planning my next visit…

winter wonderland at center parcs

** Edit – Please note this review was written in December 2019. There may be restrictions to activities including the swimming pool due to Covid-19. Please check if there are any updates to activities with Center Parcs directly, before making a booking.

1. If price is a factor, book a Woodland Lodge.

All of the lodges in Center Parcs are modern, spacious and well equipped. We stayed in a Woodland Lodge during the Winter Wonderland experience and an Executive Lodge during the summer. I found very little difference between the two, especially if you are staying for a short break. The executive lodges have house-keeping services, TV’s in all rooms and all bedrooms are ensuite – but otherwise they are very similar.

woodland lodge at center parcs ireland

2. Book a lodge close to the village centre

With rain being a common occurrence during Irish winters, I would recommend paying an additional €49 to stay in a lodge close to the village centre. Although we loved cycling, it is nice to walk to the village and the swimming pool if the rain is heavy – wet saddles are not very pleasant either! This is also a great solution for anyone who doesn’t want to rent bicycles.

3. Enjoy a cosy night in

Pop down to the Parc Market when you arrive and pick up some supplies and some fire logs – you can buy three for €6. Treat yourself to dinner from the extensive Dining In menu and light the fire! We did this the night we arrived and it was a great success. We ordered four different types of cuisine: Pizza, Thai, Indian and Asian, and all meals were delivered to our lodge at the same time. The pizza was a big hit, and I loved the prawn rogan josh. Prices were reasonable too, you could even order a bottle of wine to your lodge for €13.95! Make sure you order early, as popular delivery times get booked out.

4. Book a Santa Visit

You need to book the Santa Experience separately. The cost is €18 per child and parents are free. Each child receives a gift and a free photograph afterwards. We thought this was great value. Envelopes will be left in your lodge, one for children to write their Santa letters, and another for parents to help keep the Christmas magic alive… There is a post box in Santa’s Woodland Village where the kids can post their letters before their visit.

A post shared by Sarah Slattery – Travel Expert (@the_travel_expert) on

Depending on the age of your children, try to book a Santa visit at night time. The Woodland trail is all lit up and it adds to the experience. If the night time slots happen to be booked out, don’t panic. Santa’s Woodland Village is lit up every night and you can walk through it anytime. The Santa visit lasts about 10 minutes, so if you are booking a restaurant, book the time for a half hour after your scheduled Santa visit.

winter wonderland at center parcs longford

5. Pre-book restaurants

I tried to book restaurants two-weeks in advance, and still only managed to get 9pm slots. You don’t have to pre-book the Sports Cafè, but it can be quite noisy and I didn’t think the food was as good there as it was in other restaurants. If you have young children it is vital you book restaurants in advance, especially if you want early sittings. The restaurants are extremely family friendly, with kids play areas and great kids menus.

There isn’t evening entertainment in the resort, with the exception of live music in Cara’s Restaurant every Saturday and Tuesday at 8.30pm. We booked Cara’s for Saturday night and really enjoyed listening to The Dixie Micks. The menu was limited, but the food was very tasty.

We also enjoyed Bella Italia. We dined there twice and found the food great, and reasonably priced. There is a wide selection of pasta dishes, and not just the typical spaghetti bolognese. The Cacio e Pepe pasta: a mix of roast chicken, pancetta and pecorino cheese in a tasty wild garlic and black pepper sauce, is delicious. I had this during the summer too! I also love that they have a Piccolo kids menu for 3-6 year olds (€6.95) and a Grande kids menu for for 7-11 year olds, (€8.95).  I’ve been told that the Carbonara isn’t great so maybe avoid that!

6. Pre-book activities

Popular activities like the Aerial Adventure, where you Zipline across the lake at Center Parcs, get booked out very early. We did this during the summer and loved it – well it scared the hell out of myself and Cormac, but the kids loved it! Luke and Alex wanted to book it again but it was booked out throughout the weekend – I can’t say I was too disappointed…

center parcs longford forest ireland

Festive activities like the Festive Pony Rides and Festive Chocolate Chefs (age 3-7) are particularly popular with younger children and also need to be booked in advance. You don’t need to pre book too many activities though, one or two activities should be ample on a short stay, as you will probably spend a lot of time in the pool.

winter wonderland at center parcs longford

We really enjoyed the Festive Treasure Trail. It is a super family activity and one I would encourage all families to do. We were given a map with nine wooden markers to find around the forest. There were clues on each one and once we had all nine, we had to report back to the booking desk to collect our prize. We were competing against lots of different families and I was surprised how competitive we all were. However despite racing around the forest in just over an hour, we came 4th! It was a simple but very enjoyable family activity and a great way to explore the whole resort. Price is €5.50 for children under 12 and €6.50 for 12+years.

Luke and Cormac loved the Laser Clay Shoot. It was Luke’s first time to try this and he was a natural. He not only came first place within the group, but he set a new record score for Center Parcs Longford Forest – he was delighted with himself. I have no doubt it was due to too much Fortnite, but it was a great achievement nonetheless! Price €27 per adult, €23 per child.

Myself and Alex opted for the Festive Roller Skating. It is a handy indoor activity if the weather is bad. I didn’t find it particularly festive, but I was delighted that despite being 30 years since I has last on skates, I was able to keep up with Alex! Price €9.50 per person.

7. Don’t miss the Light and Sound Show

The Winter Wonderland light and sound show takes place over the lake every Sunday and Wednesday evening during Winter Wonderland at Center Parcs. Unfortunately it was lashing rain during our visit, but nevertheless, the 9-minute animation was really impressive. There are animals, fish and even snowmen projected on to the water, with the North Pole and Santa Claus in the finale. It takes place right outside The Pancake House so it might be an idea to pop in for one of their delicious ice cream sundaes before it starts! I am told they have mulled wine and mince pies too.

8. Check out the shops

I was really surprised by some of the prices in the shops. Luke picked up a Harry Potter Lego set in JustKids that was cheaper than Smyths. I bought a lovely Christmas decoration in The Store Room – it wasn’t particularly cheap, but was a lovely souvenir. You may not have considered it, but you may pick up some Christmas gifts in Center Parcs. Ask about the 10% off promotional evening – this is on twice per week.

9. Come early and stay late

Although the official check-in time to your lodge is 3pm, you can access the resort from 10am. Similarly on the day you are leaving, you need to vacate your lodge by 10am, but are free to stay and enjoy the facilities as long as possible. We did the later and enjoyed a fabulous day at the pool…

swimming pool at center parcs longford forest

10. Spend your last day at the pool

We loved the subtropical swimming pool during the summer, but it was equally as good this time. We tried all the slides numerous times but our favourites were the Wild Water Rapids (need to be a competent swimmer), and Tropical Cyclone – a tube ride that we could all go on together, (minimum height 122 cm).

winter wonderland at center parcs

Once you have checked out, you can leave your suitcases in your car, return your bikes and walk down to the pool. The pool is quieter on changeover days too. You can shower afterwards, dry your hair in the vanity room, and leave for home feeling refreshed. There is a cafe beside the swimming pool so you can even pick up lunch there. The chicken wraps and burgers were tasty – as fast food goes, it was pretty good.

cafe at center parcs longford forest

There are large cabanas in the Subtropical Swimming Pool. These are equipped with TVs, towels and soft drinks. Priced from €50 for three hours, they can be a great help if you have a small child who needs a nap, and older children who want to stay at the pool.

11. Bring warm clothes and a back pack.

Remember just because you are on holidays, don’t forget you are in Ireland! Gloves and hats are a must if you are cycling, and don’t even think about wearing skirts on a bike…Most people tend to dress casually, even in restaurants. Backpacks are a Godsend for the pool and are easier than hand bags when cycling.

winter wonderland at center parcs

12. Just book it!

If you haven’t already booked it – do it! Winter Wonderland at Center Parcs is an amazing family experience and one that all the family will love. If price is an issue, check out the prices for midweek (Monday – Friday) rather than weekend, (Friday – Monday).  Winter Wonderland short breaks start from €459 for a family of four in a 2 bedroom Woodland Lodge. Christmas and New Year short breaks are also available – you can dine in the resorts restaurants, or even cook a turkey in your own lodge! However if you are unable to go this year – all is not lost! You can book Winter Wonderland at Center Parcs for 2020 already. For availability and prices visit

My Top Picks For A Girls Weekend Away

girls on beach_opt

From Benalmadena to Berlin, Puerto del Carmen to Positano, designer shopping in Vilamoura, to outlet shopping in New York – check out my top picks for a girls weekend away.

A girls weekend away is something I personally love – in fact I’m pretty sure all girls do! Whether it’s lying on a beach, or shopping till you drop; add in some cocktails and no matter where you are – it’s paradise! I have places to suit all tastes, from city breaks to sun holidays, there is bound to be something here to help you plan your next girls weekend away .

 1. Costa del Sol

This is one of the most popular destinations for a girls weekend away. There are flights available from most Irish airports and a wide choice of resorts to suit all budgets. Choose Benalmadena for the lively marina, Fuengirola for excellent value shopping and restaurants, or Marbella for glitz and glamour.

2. London

London is not only one of the world’s greatest cities, but it is also an ideal choice if you are short on time. I went recently with my girlfriends – we flew out early Saturday morning and returned Sunday evening. Although we only went for one night, it felt like we had a girls weekend away. We shopped, had a delicious lunch in London’s oldest wine bar, and even managed to catch the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace. Make sure you book the hop-on hop-off Big Bus Tour – not only will you get to see London’s highlights, but you will also get a cruise on the Thames for free!

3. Algarve

The Algarve is great value for short break. There are over ten flights per day from Irish airports, so you probably pick up a bargain, particularly if you travel off peak. Choose Albufeira for lively night life, Vilamoura for upmarket shopping and dining, or Alvor for a more relaxed vibe with great restaurants, and a beach that stretches for miles.

4. Paris

Paris is always a good idea, and it doesn’t have to be springtime! Combine some sightseeing with boutique shopping, and take time out for a long lunch with some delicious French wine. Visit the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, Montmartre – the list is endless. Of course no girls weekend away to Paris would be complete without a trip to famous department store – Galeries Lafayette!

5. New York

New York is on every girls holiday wish list! Shop till you drop, feel the buzz of Time Square, dine at celebrity hangouts, and dance the night away in some of the world’s best clubs. Of course there are also lots of sights to see too. Four is the perfect number to save on expensive hotel bills and cab fares, not to mention you will have the whole ‘ Sex and the city’ vibe going on…

6. Lanzarote

If you are looking for a winter sun break, Lanzarote is the ideal choice. Expect year round sunshine, good value hotel prices and duty free shopping. Although a slightly longer flight than mainland Spain or the Algarve, the main resort of Puerto del Carmen is located less than 10 minutes from the airport – so you will be relaxing on a sun lounger in no time! Choose Puerto del Carmen for a lively (but not too rowdy) holiday, or Playa Blanca for a quiet more relaxed vibe.

 7. Berlin

Fancy a city break? Berlin is a great choice for a girls weekend away. Not only does it have some of the best nightlife in any European city, but you can also enjoy great sightseeing and shopping too. The Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie and the Berlin Wall are all located in the heart of the city, so you can combine some culture with cocktails, and get the best of both worlds. Berlin has some of the best basement nightclubs, cocktail bars and craft beer houses, so if nightlife and sightseeing is what you seek – look no further!

8. Dubai

A classy, or should I say expensive, choice for a girls weekend away – but if you have it, why not? With daily direct flights from Dublin Airport, you can choose to extend your stay to five, six or even seven nights. You can expect year round sunshine, deluxe hotels and the world’s largest shopping malls. Go to the top of the world’s tallest building, enjoy a desert safari, and if you really want to push the boat out, pop into the Burj Al Arab for Afternoon Tea. Dubai is expensive to dine out, my top-tip would be to book a hotel on half-board.

What a first day in Dubai, talk about a city of contrasts! We had an amazing Arabic breakfast in the @arabianteahouse this morning and then went to the @burjkhalifa this afternoon. To go from old Dubai to new Dubai is quite startling – it’s really like two different cities. There is so much to do here, but a visit to the worlds tallest building, the Burj Khalifa is a must. I collaborated with @atdattractions who have tickets to the 125th floor for only €36! It’s located at the #DubaiMall and right beside the Dubai Fountain, which has displays every half hour from 630pm. We spent a half day exploring that whole area and had dinner there too. 9. Positano

Positano is one of those places that is ideal for a 30th, 40th or even 50th birthday treat. Grab a few friends together who are celebrating a birthday in the same year, and just book it! It has to be one of Europe’s most idyllic resorts. Take a day trip to Capri and marvel at the designer shops, enjoy some delicious Italian food and take in the Amalfi Coast’s stunning sea views.

Top Tip: Check out some of the amazing villas on AirBNB – prices are alot less than you might think. It is also nice to have the place to yourself and maybe even have your own private pool. New to AirBnB? Sign up here and get €30 off your first stay.

10. Ibiza

Contrary to what you might think, nightlife in Ibiza is not just for students. If you are looking for top class hotels and celebrity-style hangouts, Ibiza is where it’s at. Party all night in San Antonio and catch the best sunset in the original sunset bar, Café del Mar. If you want a more sophisticated choice, stay in the uber cool Ushuaia Beach Hotel, and dance the night away at Pacha. Ibiza town is also a good choice. It is a beautiful town and is ideal for shopping. Stop by Bar 1805 for some cocktails!
