Ireland’s Best Instagram Locations

carrick a rede

I love to travel, but sometimes what you are looking for is right on your doorstep! Ireland has many stunning beaches, extraordinary landscapes and world class attractions. Check out 20 of Ireland’s best Instagram locations, just in case you need a little reminder of how beautiful our homeland is.

1. Glenadalough, Co Wicklow.

As a Dublin native, Glendalough is a place I have visited on many occasions. Just a short drive from the capital, yet worlds apart, this stunning part of Wicklow is home to Ireland’s oldest monastic site, as well as some of Ireland’s best Instagram locations. There are walking trails suitable for all fitness levels, as well as a monastic site that was founded in the 6th Century. This medieval city survived many attacks from the Vikings and is now one of the top attractions on Ireland’s Ancient East.

2. Giants Causeway, Co. Antrim.

One of Ireland’s three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Giants Causeway is probably our most famous. This small, yet fascinating site, consists of 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic eruption. Located in Antrim in Northern Ireland, it is perfectly situated to enjoy a weekend on the Causeway Coast. You can read all about my stay on the Causeway Coast here.

3. Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, Co. Antrim

Another one of Northern Ireland’s famous attractions, I loved visiting the Carrick-a-Rede Rope bridge. However it is not for the faint hearted, as it is suspended 100 ft above sea level! The Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge was raised annually for 250 years to allow fishermen access their nets, but it now stays up all year round. The photos from the bridge and the surrounding area are superb. Located just a short drive from the Giants Causeway, it is a great idea to combine two of Ireland’s best instagram locations in one trip!

4. Cliffs of Moher, Co. Clare

Rugged cliffs with breathtaking views best describes Ireland’s top tourist attraction. Located in Co. Clare, the remarkable Cliffs of Moher stretch for almost 14km of coastline. Enjoy the cliff walk and then pop into one of Doolin’s traditional Irish pubs afterwards!

5. Killarney National Park, Co. Kerry

There are so many attractions within the Killarney National Park that it is difficult to choose just one to include in this list of Ireland’s best instagram locations. Torc Waterfall, Muckross House and the stunning Killarney Lakes are all impressive in their own right, but it is the typical Irish jaunting carts that are visible throughout Killarney National Park, that caught my eye. Read about my family holiday in Killarney here.

6. Temple Bar, Dublin

For Irish natives, this will not be considered one of Ireland’s best instagram hotspots, but for tourists it certainly is. With crowded pubs playing Irish folk music, quirky boutiques selling local crafts and cobbled stone pedestrian streets – Temple Bar the picture postcard Dublin scene.

7. The Dark Hedges, Co. Antrim

For Game of Thrones fans, a trip to the The Dark Hedges in Antrim is a must. The beech trees were planted in the 18th century as the impressive entrance to the Stuart’s family house. 200 years later Bregagh Road is one of the most photographed roads in Northern Ireland. The Dark Hedges is moody and magnificent, but try to go in the morning or evening to avoid the crowds and to get the best light.

8. Cobh, Co Cork.

Famous for being the Titanic’s last port of call and for the Titanic Experience, Cobh is a popular spot with tourists. Fota Wildlife Park is also close by, as is Spike Island, but it is the colourful buildings in the town centre that make it one of Ireland’s best instagram locations.

9. Dun Chaoin Pier – Slea Head Drive, Co. Kerry

The Slea Head Drive in Kerry offers endless photo opportunities but Dun Chaoin Pier has to be one of Ireland’s best Instagram images. Located on the most westerly tip of the Dingle Peninsula, you can see the Blasket Islands just three miles off shore. It’s stunning location lends itself to amazing sunsets, if you happen to be there on a clear day. Make sure you pop into the lively town of Dingle after your visit and catch a traditional Irish music session in one of the local pubs.

10. Gap of Dunloe, Co. Kerry

The Gap of Dunloe is a narrow mountain pass in Kerry that offers stunning scenery synonymous with the Irish Landscape. Expect to see mountains awash with herds of sheep, five different lakes, old stone bridges and country cottages. You can hire a jaunting cart to travel through the 11km pass and take the boat back to Killarney. It is quintessential Ireland at it’s best.

11. Dun Briste, Down Patrick Head, Co. Mayo

Ireland’s most famous sea stack – ‘Dún Briste’ was once joined to the mainland. The name is Gaelic for Broken Fort, and it is 150 feet tall. It is easily reached by car and the car park is only a ten minute walk to the cliffs, where you will get amazing photos. Don’t miss the blow hole in the same location, and the EIRE 64 sign that was carved into the ground during World War 2. This was there to show American planes overhead that they were passing a neutral country. Not only is Down Patrick Head one of Ireland’s best Instagram locations, it is also one of its most interesting.

12. Lough Tay, Co Wicklow

Another gem in Co.Wicklow, Lough Tay is easily accesible from Dublin, if you fancy a hike or even a scenic drive. The Guinness family estate runs through the area and the white sand at the top of the lake is said to resemble a pint of guinness!  The views from Military Road are spectacular, especially if you get a fine day.

13. Ha’penny bridge, Dublin

Located in the heart of Dublin’s city centre,  the famous Ha’Penny Bridge is one of the earliest cast-iron structures of its kind. It connects the north side of the city to the south side and it is next to Temple Bar, one of Dublin’s top night spots.

14. Skellig Michael, Co. Kerry

One of Ireland’s oldest sites is now one of our top tourist attractions. It is one of only three UNESCO world heritage sites in Ireland and is one of the famous locations in Star Wars, The Last Jedi. However it is not the easiest place to get to, visitor numbers are restricted and the boats only visit the island if there are calm seas. You need to pre-book your experience by phoning one of the local boatmen. Don’t panic if you are unable to step on to Skellig Michael, Portmagee or Valentia Island offer superb views of the islands and are instagrammable hotspots too.

15. Cuilcagh Boardwalk  – Stairway to Heaven Walk, Co. Fermanagh

Cuilcagh is a mountain between Fermanagh and Cavan and is home to the famous ‘Stairway to Heaven’ walk. You need to walk for 4km before you reach the boardwalk and the final ascent is via steep steps, so it is not for the faint hearted. However once you reach the viewing platform, you will be rewarded with breath-taking views of the surrounding landscape. This is surely one of Ireland’s best instagram locations.

16. Glaslough village, Co. Monaghan

This small Irish village is well known for being the home town to the luxurious Castle Leslie Estate in Monaghan. Although surrounded by beautiful lakes and woodlands, it is the stone cottages with colourful flowers that make it one of Ireland’s prettiest villages. Read all about how I was captivated by Castle Leslie and Glaslough village here.

Famous for it’s traditional Irish music, or ‘trad sessions’ as the locals call it, Doolin is also a pretty colourful town and shouldn’t be missed if travelling along the Wild Atlantic Way.  The fact that is just happens to be 10 minutes from the Cliffs of Moher is another bonus!

Regarded as one of Ireland’s best beaches – Keem beach took my breath away when I visited. It is located at the very end of the Achill Island, Ireland’s largest island and is easily reached by car. My advice would be to go early and get a parking spot right beside the beach. Make sure you climb up the mountain behind the beach for the most incredible views and the famous Instagram shot.

19. The Long Room in Trinity College, Dublin.

One of the top things to do in Dublin is visit Trinity College. And one of the few regrets I have in life, (I have very few), is that I wish I went to college there! The main chamber of the Old Library of Trinity College is called the Long Room. It is 65 metres in length and filled with 200,000 of the Library’s oldest books. It is one of the most impressive libraries in the world and certainly deserves it’s place on Ireland’s best instagram locations list.

20. Titanic Museum, Co. Antrim.

Not only is this one of the world’s leading tourist attractions, but the Titanic Museum looks great on the gram! This modern building, designed by Eric Kuhne, has been designed to look like a ship, with sharp edges and a striking structure that stands out against the Belfast’s docks.

21. Donegal Airport

Voted the most scenic airport in the world for the second year in a row, this is an incredible feat when you think that it fought off competition from St Maarten, Nice and Mahe. The combination of the rugged coastline, sandy beaches and majestic mountains helped it win the coveted prize. However just two routes operate from Donegal, so perhaps it is best to combine a visit with a stay in Dublin – check out Stobart Air for flights.

22. The Guinness Store House

No visit to Dublin would be complete without a visit to its number 1 attraction, the Guinness Store House. Enjoy seven floors of interactive experiences, before you are rewarded with a pint of the black stuff in their world-famous roof top Gravity Bar. With panoramic views of the Dublin skyline, is there a better way to toast Ireland than this?

The Best Family Activities in Dubai

desert safari

Dubai is one of the world’s best family holiday destinations. There is so much to do for adults and children, with year round sunshine, glorious beaches and an endless supply of theme parks. Deciding which family activities in Dubai to choose can be difficult though, but I am here to help! 😎

Top tips for family activities in Dubai

The first thing you need to consider is the time of year you are travelling. If you are going to be in Dubai from November to April, the average temperature is a balmy 28 degrees, so outdoor family activities in Dubai are ideal. If on the other hand you are travelling during the summer months, when temperatures are regularly over 40 degrees, believe me, you will want air-conditioning!

dubai marina with kids

Something else worth noting is that the cost of living in Dubai is high, entrance fees to attractions are not cheap, so it is really important that you book excursions and theme parks before you travel. Not only will it save you money, but you will be able to budget your spending money much more efficiently. I collaborated with Attraction Tickets Direct, who offer a wide selection of theme park tickets and activities in Dubai, at low prices! They the UK & Ireland’s largest provider of theme park tickets, who send you real park tickets (not vouchers) with free delivery and no credit card fees.

I am just back from a family holiday in Dubai and Attraction Tickets Direct arranged all my trips and attractions. Everything worked out perfectly, all tickets, trips and prices were excellent. Check out my recommendations for the best family activities in Dubai below, which includes some free things to do in Dubai as well as it’s top attractions 😉.

Outdoor family activities in Dubai

Atlantis The Palm, The Lost Chambers Aquarium & Aquaventure Water Park

Atlantis is a must visit if travelling to Dubai with kids. Located on Palm Island, the excitement starts as soon as you board the monorail to get there (note the monorail is cash only). My kids loved the train journey, but when they saw Atlantis The Palm Hotel in the distance, it was like seeing Sleeping Beauty’s castle in Disneyland for the first time.

family activities in dubai

The train stops right outside the hotel and once you go inside, it is sensory overload. Home to 1500 rooms, 23 different dining options and a world class aquarium, it really has the wow factor. Be warned, your kids will want to know why you are not staying there!

Make sure you arrive early and go straight to Aquaventure waterpark. You will need a full day there and it closes earlier than the Lost Chambers Aquarium. My advice is spend the day at the waterpark, enjoy a nice meal afterwards and visit the Aquarium in the evening time.

family activities in dubai

We loved the 2km river ride, its almost like a lazy river but has some rapids along the way. It is a great way to climatise yourself with the waterpark and it is suitable for all the family. Some of our favourite rides in Aquaventure were The Falls, Aquaconda and Zoomerango. There are plenty of rides for kids of all ages, with Splashers Island for younger kids, a dolphin encounter where you can swim with dolphins, as well as Poseidon’s Revenge or the Leap of Faith for adrenaline junkies!

Price for a combo ticket to Aquaventure and the Lost Chambers Aquarium is €86 for adults and €68 for children.

Price for dolphin encounter which includes the chance to kiss and play with one of the dolphins is €191.

Desert Safari & Sunset Barbecue

This was one of our favourite family activities in Dubai. While theme parks and water parks are great family days out, you could be anywhere in the world. When we were out in the middle of the Arabian desert, we felt far removed from the skyscrapers of modern Dubai. It felt exotic, cultural and enchanting. The desert safari will always remind us of our family holiday in Dubai.

family activities in dubai

I checked numerous prices before booking with Attraction Tickets Direct and I was surprised at the value for money they offered. All of their modern 4-wheel drive jeeps take six people, so depending on how many are in your family, you may or may not, have a private tour. We were collected from our hotel by jeep and brought straight out to the desert. We enjoyed a few photo stops before riding or ‘dune bashing’ across the dunes to a Bedouin camp. We all loved the dune bashing, we screamed with excitement the whole time. It was great fun and not at all sickening, which I was expecting.

We arrived at the Bedouin camp in the middle of the desert and were treated to a tasty BBQ with starters and side dishes. This was followed by belly dancing and Tanoura dancing. The show was not really my thing but it was very well done. Camel rides and all food and drinks were included (separate charge for alcohol) so we relaxed for a couple of hours, enjoyed some sundowners, followed by some star gazing underneath the night sky. It was a thoroughly enjoyable day, and I thought it was superb value for a five hour trip.

Price is only €71 for adult and €53 for children age 3-11, this is a lot cheaper than many of the trips offered locally.

Spend the day one of Dubai’s many beaches:

Many hotels have private beaches, but if your hotel or apartment does not have this facility, fear not, Dubai has some great public beaches too. We went to JBR beach, located beside ‘The Walk’. The crystal clear water, white sand and wide selection of restaurants, makes it a great choice for a relaxing day, with the added bonus of it being something free to do in Dubai! There are lots of watersports available too. Kids can enjoy banana boat rides, parasailing or the inflatable water park on the sea, while you chill out on the beach – it’s a win win!

public beach dubai

Visit the Dubai Fountain:

Don’t miss the fountain show outside the Dubai Mall. It is the world’s largest choreographed fountain system and thankfully is another free thing to do in Dubai! There are shows every 30 minutes from 6pm to 11pm. There are many restaurants with outdoor tables so you can combine dinner with the show, but make sure you get there early, as outside tables can be hard to get. We ate in Serafina and had a birds eye view, although we did pay heavily for the privilege – €200 for pizza and a few beers! However, they do serve alcohol (many restaurants don’t) and have a good kids menu! The portions are huge, so you can always box leftovers and have it for lunch the following day. See more tips for a family holiday in Dubai here, including where to eat and where to stay.

Dubai Parks & Resorts

Dubai Parks and Resorts is made up of three different parks, Legoland, Bollywood Park and Motion Gate, the latter being a park dedicated to three of the largest motion picture studios in Hollywood. Motion Gate has 27 rides and attractions and a host of street performances, there is something here for all ages. Younger kids will love Shreks World as well as Kung Fu Panda, Smurfs and Madagascar performances, while teenagers will love The Hunger Games attraction. Many parts of Motion Gate are indoors, which comes in handy if you need to escape the hot sun.

Bollywood Park is the first theme park dedicated to Bollywood. It has thrilling rides, elaborate performances, a live stunt show, as well as beautiful scenery and a replica of the Taj Mahal. Legoland is another must visit for any Lego enthusiasts or young children. You will probably need a full day here as there is a waterpark on-site too.

family activities in dubai

One day tickets are available from €32 to Motion Gate and Bollywood. Day tickets to Legoland cost €59. Why not buy a combo ticket and visit all three parks over two days ?

Indoor family activities in Dubai

Burj Khalifa

No visit to Dubai would be complete without visiting the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa. Chances are the kids will have heard about it in school, or have seen Tom Cruise scale it in Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol! There are two different viewing platforms and I was told the view is similar from both. We decided to go with the cheaper option and just visit the 124th floor, rather than the 148th floor, as the difference in price was €244 for four of us!

Dubai regularly gets sand storms in the morning, so I advise going in the afternoon when the visibility is clearer. The entrance is located inside the Dubai Mall so it is a good idea to combine a visit to the Burj Khalifa with some shopping or the Fountain Show, just outside it.

Ski Dubai

Located inside the Mall of the Emirates, Ski Dubai is not only a great family day out, but it can be a welcome break from the heat during the summer months. There is a huge ski slope and chair lifts, it really feels like a ski resort! Don’t worry if you are a novice, there are plenty of instructors there to give lessons. It is not all about skiing, you can also try snowboarding, tobogganing, snow tubing and even zorbing. Younger kids can join in or simply play in the snow, but make sure you don’t miss the ‘March of the Penguins,’ when penguins waddle across the snow in a delightful procession. The penguin march takes place 3 to 4 times a day.

Snow jacket, pants, boots, socks and helmets for children are also provided. Note you need to book a separate ski pass if you want to ski.

IMG Worlds of Adventure:

Not only does Dubai have the world’s tallest building and the world’s biggest shopping mall, it also has the world’s largest indoor theme park, IMG Worlds of Adventure. This is a great option if you want to avoid the hot sun. There are five different adventure zones including Marvel, Cartoon Network and dinosaurs themed areas. Meet your Marvel super heroes or enjoy thrilling rides, including Avengers Battle of Ultron and Spider-Man Doc Ock’s Revenge.

Daredevils can visit the Haunted Hotel. Navigate a maze of corridors and encounter scary characters – this terrifying attraction is only valid for people aged 15 or over! Make sure you download the free app before you go and let it’s GPS tracking direct you to rides with the shortest queues – only in Dubai…….

Although just five minutes from the beach, you may find it difficult to leave it’s massive swimming pool! Kids will love the children’s pool too, which comes with water slides. There is a kids club and plenty of activities available during the day, as well as a mini disco and live shows in the evening time. If you fancy some quiet time, indulge in the spa which has a Turkish bath!

3 Unique Things to do in Tenerife

himmel-2482154_1280

From star gazing to whale watching, check out these unique things to do in Tenerife and get planning your next visit.

Did you know that star gazing in Tenerife is a big deal? Fancy whale and dolphin watching on a luxury yacht? Or maybe you prefer to visit authentic Tenerife instead? I visited Tenerife on a couple of occasions and like many, I went to enjoy the sunshine. I was aware that one of the world’s best water parks, Siam Park, is in Tenerife, as is Spain’s highest mountain, Mount Teide, but it was only recently that I realised there were so many unique things to do in Tenerife.

I spoke to fellow hodophile Frances Ryan, who has visited Tenerife on many occasions. It was great to talk to her about some of experiences and she kindly wrote guest posts for me on some of the unique things to do in Tenerife. Here are her favourites.

Star Gazing in Tenerife:

Tenerife is one of three designated protected star gazing locations in the world. Yes this came as a surprise to me too! Take a trip to Mount Teide, Spain’s highest mountain, for an evening of discovery. This trip is easily accessible from most resorts in Tenerife and should not be missed if you have a remote interest in the night sky. A word of warning, you will be star gazing at an altitude of 2400 meters so make sure to bring warm clothing! Read more about star gazing in Tenerife by clicking here.

Dolphin and Whale Watching in Tenerife:

Located in Puerto Colon, just a 20 minute walk along the sea front from Playa de las Americas, is White Tenerife Sea Charter. They arrange numerous boat tips but one of their favourites is dolphin and whale watching, which appeals to young and old alike. The White Tenerife yachts are state of the art and take up to eleven passengers, which makes for a very personalised experience and must be one of the top things to do in Tenerife. Expect to see pilot whales and bottle nose dolphins as well as a chance to jump into the sea for a brief swim.  Read more about whale watching in Tenerife here.

Go off the beaten track and visit Garachico

Once the main port of Tenerife, Garachico was wealthy and busy in the 15th and 16th centuries, the spectacular buildings in the town are evidence of this. The town is really well kept and the village square, Plaza de la Libertad, is where you will find the town hall and Garachico’s remarkable church. Make sure you bring your swimming togs too, the natural rock pools (El Caleton), are a major attraction on this coastline. Read more about visiting Garachico here.

Next time you visit Tenerife, why not leave the sun lounger for the day and try something completely different. These unique things to do in Tenerife are evidence that there is more to this Canary Island than sun and sandy beaches.
