Five Things To Do With Kids In Puerto del Carmen

rancho texas park

With a super theme park, an open air cinema and some great dining options, it is no wonder that Puerto del Carmen is one of Lanzarote’s top family resorts. Here are my top five things to do with kids in Puerto del Carmen.

1.Visit Rancho Texas Park

Rancho Texas Park is a super theme park, located just minutes from Puerto del Carmen. There are free buses available from many collection points but we took a taxi, it was only €4 from our hotel, Aqua Suites. I recommend spending most of the day here, it is a fantastic day out for all of the family . There are dolphin, seal, eagle, parrot and wild west shows, and you can get up close to hundreds of animals. See an elusive white tiger, a Komodo dragon, raccoons, armadillos and many more! After a few hours in the main park, you can enjoy some chill time at their large lagoon style pool and kids splash zone. Thrillseekers will love their two large water slides too!

2. Go to the open air cinema

This is located on the top floor of the shopping centre in the old town of Puerto del Carmen. A word of warning, you need to book in advance! We tried to book on two occasions but it was booked out for the whole week. I spoke to a few families who visited, and they loved it. You can watch family movies at 830pm or 1030/1045pm in comfy bean bags under the stars. Blankets are provided on chilly nights and you can enjoy food to your table during the movie. Just hit the bell at your table when you want to order drinks or food. There are also simulator rides, Jurassic World adventure golf and a kids zone, which can be enjoyed before or after the movie.

3. Spend a night at the Harbour

The old town of Puerto del Carmen is full of character, with great restaurants on every corner. Wander down to the harbour in the evening time and watch the daredevils jump off the rocks into the sea. There is a great playground beside the bars and restaurants where kids can play happily, while you enjoy cocktails as the sun sets 💛.

Follow that with a nice meal in Bozenas restaurant. Opened since 2003 this family establishment boasts 85% Irish customers. Don’t miss their famous stroganoff which is served on a potato rosti! They offer gluten free, vegetarian and vegan dishes and kids enjoy great quality food too, including their very own home-made chicken nuggets.

4. Spend a day at the beach.

This might sound like an obvious choice but with a inflatable water park in the sea, pedalos with water slides, and the possibility of seeing lots of fish close to the shore, the beaches in Puerto del Carmen are a must visit. The main beach, Playa Grande is where you will find the water sports but the lesser known cove Chica Beach is popular for snorkeling as fish can be seen very close to the shore. Locals like to feed the fish with pieces of bread in the evening time. You can join in, or watch, depending on the ages of your children.

5. Experience a teppanyaki meal at Enjoy Asian Restaurant

Considering its somewhat tacky outward appearance – this was a real surprise for me. The food not only tasted great but a ‘Ninja’ (according to my 10 year old son Luke) cooked our dinner in front of us! It is a real treat for adults and kids alike. You don’t need to go for the full Japanese menu, they have fillet steak and chicken breasts too. Our host had lots of tricks up his sleeve, including knife throwing and impressive chopping skills. He also threw small pieces of scrambled eggs and Luke caught them in his mouth! Make sure you get the ice cream desert, which is placed inside a hot crepe and flambéed right in front of you. Book the teppanyaki table in advance, it only has room for about 20 people.

Where to stay:

We stayed in the Aqua Suites, a small boutique hotel that is rated number 2 on tripadvisor for all hotels in the Canary Islands. The bright, modern suites and home from home atmosphere, combined with amazing food, are just some of the reasons why I think the Aqua Suites is the best place to stay in Puerto del Carmen with kids – check out my review for more details.

Why The Aqua Suites Is The Best Place To Stay In Puerto Del Carmen With Kids

aqua suites

Superb service, fabulous food and spacious suites are just some of the reasons why I think the Aqua Suites is the best place to stay in Puerto del Carmen with kids. Find out more in this post.

Run by Irish travel professional Geraldine Mc Fadden, I had heard nothing but good things about Aqua Suites. Many friends and industry colleagues have stayed there and all came back with glowing reports. Aqua Suites was opened in 2016 and already has been voted the second best place to stay throughout the Canary Islands by tripadvisor. This is astonishing when you think of all the luxury five star hotels that are available, not only in Lanzarote, but on the other islands too.

aqua suites

Aqua Suites is sold on a half-board basis, which isn’t something I usually book, as we like to eat out at night time. What impressed me was the fact that we could swap dinner for lunch, so we were not confined to eating there every night. I had also heard the food was excellent, but Aqua Suites is a four-star boutique hotel in Puerto del Carmen, it is not the Ritz Carlton…. I had to go and see what all the fuss was about. Could it possibly live up to the hype?

The combination of Lanzarote airport’s quick baggage delivery and the proximity of the Aqua Suites to the airport, meant we were standing in reception of Aqua Suites within thirty minutes of the plane landing! We left Dublin early in the morning and arrived just in time for breakfast – it is served until 11am in Aqua Suites. We were warmly greeted with champagne at reception and kindly shown to our table while our room was being prepared. Mandy, just one of the many friendly staff, explained in great detail how and where everything was. This set the tone for our entire visit. I recalled Geraldine, the General Manager’s quote in The Irish Times; “We don’t say ‘no’ at Aqua Suites. There is always a solution“.

aqua suites

The cold buffet was packed with various cereals, fresh fruit and a wide variety of breads as well as fresh juices and cava. Aqua Suites also offer an à la carte breakfast, which is included in the cost of your stay. No queuing, no lukewarm sausages, but freshly cooked hot breakfasts, and to the delight of my son, there was ‘real bacon’! They also have a special dish each day which ranged from scrambled eggs with smoked salmon to churros with hot chocolate sauce. We were all really impressed straight away – a tasty hot breakfast served to our table and we hadn’t even got to our room yet!

aqua suites

The suites are bright and modern with a large double bed and a separate room for children. Note the two-roomed suites don’t have two separate bedrooms. The main room is huge but the second room is small so it would really only suit two young children. Aqua Suites has three-roomed suites too, so if you have three children or just want the additional space these are ideal. The suites are well equipped with tea and coffee making facilities and a complimentary stocked minbar on arrival, which is replenished with bottled water each day. All have a balcony or terrace with sun loungers and a table and chairs. The rooms felt more like apartments than a typical hotel room. It was great to have the extra space and the large balcony. We enjoyed pre-dinner drinks on our balcony in the evenings while the kids watched TV inside.

Aqua Suites is renowned for its great food but despite being told by many people how good it was, I was still blown away by the choice, quality and flavour. The menus are changed daily and placed on a blackboard each morning. At breakfast time we decided whether we would have lunch or dinner. Every meal we had was excellent and always freshly cooked. The paella was superb but my favourite had to be the Italian night. The chef is from Lake Como and the food was authentic Italian cuisine bursting with flavour. In fact, one night we ate in La Casa del Pamigiano, which is supposed to be the best Italian restaurant in Puerto del Carmen, but I thought the food was better at the Italian night in Aqua Suites.

aqua suites

Aqua Suites also has a snack bar menu with salads, burgers, chicken wraps etc so if you or the kids don’t fancy a three course meal, you can choose a light bite instead. We loved the prawn pil-pil at lunchtime and the pizzas were delicious! On a few occasions we chose not to have dessert at lunchtime, but this was not forgotten by the staff. At 5pm when the kids started to get a bit peckish, they were allowed take an ice cream from the fridge in lieu of dessert. We hired a car one day and happened to miss lunch and dinner. Mandy was quick to point out that we could now have a free lunch at any time during our stay. It turned out our return flight wasn’t leaving until 8pm so despite having checked out, we were able to have a late lunch free of charge before we left for the airport. It seemed at every turn we were getting things for free!

aqua suites

The Aqua Suites has a large pool as well as a separate kids pool and a large adult-only heated jacuzzi. During school holidays there is regular entertainment by the pool as well as activities in the kids club. These range from biscuit decorating to water polo competitions, as well as poolside quizzes. They have special events too including  a Reptile Show and an evening Fire Show Spectacular. There is nightly entertainment for adults and kids which varies from a pizza and pyjama party for kids, to live music and family game shows. We arrived at the end of the Summer season so the kids entertainment was finishing. We did manage to catch one quiz night. John Mac the entertainment co-ordinator was great and really got the kids involved. It just so happened that Cormac’s knowledge of movie trivia was unrivalled and we won a bottle of champagne! I was surprised by how much entertainment and activities are available during school holidays, particularly for a small hotel.

aqua suites

One of the many things I loved about the Aqua Suites is the flexibility. I loved that we were able to dine out some evenings and have lunch by the pool during the day. Aqua Suites is ideally located just ten minutes walk to the seafront where there is a wide selection of shops bars and restaurants. One evening, we ate in the Asian Restaurant Enjoy and had a fantastic teppanyaki experience. We also went down to the old town and dined in Emma’s Cantina, a Mexican restaurant, which is affiliated with the Aqua Suites – so believe it or not we were able to dine there for free too! Just tell the staff at breakfast time that you wish to dine there instead of Aqua Suites and they will arrange it for you.

After my visit I now understand why the Aqua Suites is voted the 2nd best hotel on tripadvisor throughout the Canary Islands. It has all the benefits of a hotel but also has spacious rooms, exceptional food and a homely atmosphere. But it was the extra touches that made it stand out for me. The stocked mini-bar when we arrived, the complimentary bottled water each day in the room and being allowed to keep our room on until 6pm on departure, free of charge. (Aqua Suites will allow late check out for everyone, subject to availability, I don’t know of many establishments that offer this service.) Despite eating there almost every day, our bill was so small at the end of the week, because all meals were included in the cost, we only had drinks to pay for. The staff call you by name and go above and beyond to ensure you and your children will want to return.  I have no doubt that we will.

Why Lapland Is One Of The Most Magical Trips You Will Ever Take

santa in lapland

I have teamed up with Sunway, who offer more packages to Lapland from Ireland than anyone else. Our Sunway holiday to Lapland was magical. I still vividly recall my son lying with his ear to the snowy ground, telling me he could hear the elves making toys underneath…..

It’s been nearly four years since our visit, but it might as well have been yesterday. Our photo with Santa is still perched right in the centre of our living room and when a new visitor comes into the house, irrespective of the time of year, they inevitably hear how ‘we saw the REAL Santa’.

packages to Lapland from Ireland

Words that we learned during our trip are still recounted in high pitched Finnish accents four years later, particularly ‘Joulupukki’ (Santa in Finnish) – if only they remembered their Irish words so well! We have been very fortunate to go on many great family holidays, but Lapland is still the most talked about trip in our house. We took a short video while we were there and it is religiously watched every year after we put up the Christmas tree and again on Christmas Eve. It’s part of our ritual now, along with putting out the milk and cookies for Santa before bed time.

People often say to me about the cost. I know it is expensive. You could easily get a week in the sun for the same price, but ask yourself which will the kids remember more? Will they talk to their kids about the week they spent in Majorca when they were 8? I don’t think so. I have no doubt that my kids will share their memories of Lapland with their own children one day. It is lifetime memories like this that are priceless.

packages to Lapland from Ireland

We travelled with Sunway.ie who have sent thousands of families to Lapland over the past twelve years  – suffice to say they know what makes the perfect Santa experience. They offer one and two night trips to Rovaniemi and three and four night trips to Kittilä. Sunway have packages available from Dublin, Cork, Shannon, Knock and Kerry. It is important to note that they have payment plans in place, so you don’t need to pay in full at the time of booking, a deposit of €100 per person will secure your place. If you can’t afford it this year, don’t worry, you can even book now for 2019 at 2018 prices!

packages to Lapland from Ireland

Believe it or not, the magic actually starts long before you arrive in Lapland. Imagine your kids faces when you tell them they are going to see the ‘real’ Santa? That’s when the fun starts! This is enhanced further when you arrive at the airport and see the  ‘North Pole’ as the destination at the check-in desk. It seems every child is wearing a Christmas jumper and Sunway’s elves are on hand with goody bags for all the children. It is a magical start to the journey and is typical of the attention to detail and service that Sunway provide throughout all of their packages.

packages to Lapland from Ireland

While a private meeting with the ‘REAL’ Santa might be the reason you book a holiday to Lapland, it is not the only thing that is memorable about the trip. Just being in a winter wonderland, with snowy forests all around, is something pretty special too. All of Sunway’s trips offer husky and reindeer rides, as well as snowmobiling and a trip to Santa’s village and Santa’s post office  – not your typical holiday experiences!

packages to Lapland from Ireland

Which package to choose?

Sunway offer four packages to Lapland from Ireland. If you are short on annual leave or if cost is a factor, the one night Santa’s Sleepover trip, priced at €979 per adult and €819 per child. may suit you. This is available from Dublin, Cork, Kerry, Knock and Shannon airports – you can see details here.

We went on the two-night Sleighbell Spectacular trip, currently priced from €1329 per adult and €1129 per child from Dublin airport. This includes a snowmobile safari through the forest, a visit to Santa’s command centre and elf school, tobogganing, and a festive dinner with a show. This show is a great opportunity to meet Santa for a second time and get a souvenir photo – just in case the first one didnt work out so well in the command centre! See more details here or read all about our trip to Lapland here.

packages to Lapland from Ireland

For those who want to experience the winter wonderland for a bit longer, Sunway also offer three and four night trips to Kittala from Dublin airport. These include all the favourites as the other trips but you will have some more free time to build snowmen, go skiing or simply relax and take in the magnificent surroundings. You can read all about them here.

When looking at the costs note that all of above prices include flights, accommodation, transfers, all activities, meals and arctic clothing. You really only need spending money for souvenirs. And if this year is too soon to travel, why not want to plan now for 2019? Simply place a deposit now to secure your place at this years prices and talk to Sunway about their payment plans. Lanzarote is a great family holiday destination. With year round sunshine, great beaches and lots of facilities for children, it has been a firm favourite with Irish holidaymakers for many years. The newly built marina has some great shopping options with local boutiques and designer shops. This resort is very popular with families as there are numerous self catering options to choose from, most of them offering an entertainment programme and facilities for children. There is also a water park here, Aqualava, or if you fancy a family fun day out try Rancho Texas animal park in Puerto del Carmen.

Top 5 Adventure Holidays In Asia – With Flights & Luxury Hotels Included

thai-tourists-web

Cambodia and Vietnam, Malaysia and Borneo or a multi-centre in Thailand, there are so many choices for adventure holidays in Asia, check out my top five.

When we talk about going to Europe, we don’t compare Bulgaria with Spain, or Norway with Albania, so why do we do it when we talk about a holiday to Asia? We need to remember that each country has something unique to offer. Planning a trip to Asia can be tricky. Weather can not only vary from country to country, but in some cases you may find the rainy season in the north of the country and hot dry weather in the south – at exactly the same time! It can be a good idea to combine cities or jungle treks with beach resorts, or to combine two or three different countries in the one trip.

I have teamed up with Tropical Sky, the long haul holiday specialists to bring you my top five adventure holidays in Asia. These are just a sample of the holidays Tropical Sky offer in the region. All of the prices below include flights, transfers and top quality hotels – in most cases five star resorts! If you want to alter these itineraries in any way, just talk to their dedicated sales team and they will tailor make a holiday to suit you.

Thailand: Elephant Hills Experience with Phuket & Khao Lak Beach Stay, 12 Nights, from €3379

Sleeping in a tent in Thailand’s tropical rainforest is enough to make me want to try this trip! Throw in jungle trekking, canoeing and taking care of elephants and you have one of best adventure holidays in Asia.

Before embarking on the Elephant Hills experience you will first spend five nights in the luxurious Vijitt Resort in Phuket. This exclusive all-villa resort is the ultimate in five star luxury. Located on the Andaman Sea, this retreat is an ideal way to start your holiday in relaxing surroundings. You will then be taken by mini-bus to Elephant Hills in Khao Sok National Park, which will be your home for the next two nights. There is no need to worry, the tents have a double bed with bathrooms! Learn all about the conservation of the elephants and help feed them, as well as enjoying a canoe safari, jungle trek and longtail boat cruise.

Your final destination is the beach resort of Khao Lak. You will be staying at the contemporary Bangsak Merlin hotel where you can chill out and enjoy the on-site facilities, or take the short shuttle ride to the centre of Khao Lak and enjoy some local food, shopping and entertainment.

Price from €3379 includes flights, transfers, hotels on a bed & breakfast basis in Phuket and Khao Lak and full board at Elephant hills.

Vietnam & Cambodia: Hanoi, Halong Bay, Hoi An & Angkor Wat, 12 Nights from €2,449

A two centre holiday in Vietnam and Cambodia is a very popular choice for an adventure holiday in Asia. The short two hour flight from Dha Nang directly to the town of Siem Reap in Cambodia makes it an ideal combination. This twelve night itinerary combines the best of Vietnam with a three night stay to see the world’s largest religious monument at Angkor Wat.

Your holiday starts with a three night stay in Vietnam’s capital, Hanoi. After a busy few days you will transfer by private car to Halong Bay, where you will board a luxury junk boat for an overnight cruise. There is no better way to explore this captivating UNESCO World Heritage site, than by boat. See how the Vietnamese trade in the early morning and enjoy cocktails and seaviews.

You will then drive back to Hanoi to catch a short flight to Da Nang where you will transfer to the riverside town of Hoi An for four nights. Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hoi An is a pretty riverside town with pedestrianised streets and ancient buildings. Next stop is Siem Reap in Cambodia where you will spend three nights in the luxury Heritage Suites Hotel. Located only fifteen minutes from Angkor, you will have plenty of time to discover the ancient monuments, try some local Khmer tapas (a must-have) and also enjoy the swimming pool in the afternoons.

Price from €2449 includes all flights, transfers and hotels on a bed & breakfast basis.

Borneo: Jungle & Beach, 10 Nights from €2,499

You only have to say the word Borneo and adventure springs to mind. Tropical rainforests, stunning beaches, amazing marine life and the chance to see Orangutans in their natural habitat – this ten night trip to Borneo is one of my favourite adventure holidays in Asia.

You will fly into Kota Kinabalu where you will enjoy a three-night stay at the Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa, before flying north to Sandakan. Your first stop is the Orangutan rehabilitation centre at Sepilok, where Orangutans roam free and you can observe from jungle boardwalks. You will also be able to visit the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, where rescued sun bears live. After an action packed morning enjoy a river cruise and lunch at the Abai Jungle Lodge, where you will stay for two nights. Check out my top waterpark holidays for 2021 and give the kids a Summer holiday to remember!

I’m guessing if you asked your children to name one thing they love about Summer holidays, they will say the swimming pool. When you book a SplashWorld holiday you will enjoy the advantages of an all inclusive resort with all meals and drinks included in the price, as well as having free access to a waterpark throughout your stay.
