St Lucia For Romance, Adventure And Family Fun

jademountain-saintlucia5_opt

Palm fringed beaches, crystal clear waters and dramatic tropical rainforests. The Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic ocean, old plantations and modern resorts, waterfalls and watersports, St Lucia has it all.

Although known as one of the most romantic Caribbean islands, St Lucia is not just for couples. It’s mountainous terrain makes it ideal for adventure sports, while families love the all-inclusive resorts, numerous watersports and rainforest adventures. I holidayed in St Lucia with my husband and we absolutely loved it. There was so much to see and do, I would highly recommend a visit! Here are my top picks in St Lucia for romance, adventure and family fun.

St Lucia

Romance

St Lucia and romance go hand in hand. The combination of palm fringed beaches and tropical rainforests make it the picture postcard island. Try scuba diving or snorkelling in the Caribbean Sea, take a hike through the spectacular rainforests or bathe in the Toraille waterfall.  Treat yourself to fine dining at Cliff at Cap Restaurant and enjoy a sunset cruise Caribbean style. St Lucia is the perfect destination for a romantic getaway.

Where to stay: – Rendezvous Hotel

For the perfect romantic beach hotel, it has to be Rendezvous. This adult only, boutique hotel is situated on two miles of white sand beach. It’s all-inclusive too, so you can relax on a sun lounger and have the fantastic staff bring cocktails as often as you like! There are two swimming pools, a jacuzzi and a spa. Renowned for its superb cuisine, this classic hotel can do no wrong.

beach-84631_1280

Nature & Adventure

The iconic twin peaks of the Pitons are practically asking to be climbed. The larger of the two, Gros Piton is the easier to climb and is worth the six hour round trip. The views of St Lucia and the Caribbean Sea are stunning and it is also the cool thing to do when you are there! If hiking is not your thing try a segway or island buggy tour. Visit the colonial plantations in the south of the island, try a volcanic mud bath and end your tour with a bathe in the Toraille waterfall.  If you are staying in the north, The Babonneau rainforest near Rodney bay is a great day out. Try their zipline and release your inner Tarzan! Watersports are plentiful too, with snorkelling, sailing and kitesurfing being the most popular.

Where to stay: – Jade Mountain Hotel.

For a once in a life time luxury experience it has to be the Jade Mountain hotel. One of St Lucia’s best hotels,  it is located on a hilltop offering stunning views of the Pitons and the Caribbean Sea. This this a nature lovers paradise. Your room, or sanctuary as they like to call them has a private infinity pool, no TV and even WiFi is only available if requested. If escapism, romance and luxury is what you seek – look no further.

St Lucia

Family Fun

St Lucia is a great choice for a family holiday in the Caribbean. The calm Caribbean Sea is perfect for snorkelling even with small children. Kids will see the colourful fish and marine life in the shallow waters. Depending on where you are staying you can book a day trip with equipment rental included through most hotels. Dolphin and whale watching tours are a great choice for day out. Teenagers will love the many ziplines available through the Rainforest Adventures. Most have a minimum age of 12 or height restriction of 50″ but the Treetop adventure park includes a mini course with suspended bridges for younger kids.

Where to stay: The Coconut Bay Resort.

The Coconut Bay Resort is an ideal choice for families. There is a dedicated family wing which has it’s own waterpark, complete with lazy river and a host of slides. The Cocoland kids club is perfect for kids up to age 12 and there are plenty of on site activities and entertainment for all ages. The petting zoo has interactive zones where kids can pet and feed the animals. There is a separate adults only area in the hotel so you can chill out and relax while the kids are happy at the waterpark. Just sign in and sign out using a local phone and your kids can contact you at any time! The all-inclusive arrangement is great for families too, kids can help themselves to drinks, ice creams and snacks during the day.

St Lucia

I think it’s fair to say that St Lucia is one of the Caribbean islands where everything is possible. Young or old, thrill seeker or beach lover, St Lucia safely ticks all boxes. For more details and advice on resorts, contact the experts at Tropical Sky.ie . Their staff have visited the hotels and will recommend the right hotel for you.

A Review Of Ethiopian Airlines Direct Dublin – Los Angeles Service

et-787-dap3_opt

Lonely Planet listed LA as one of the top cities to visit in 2017 and lucky for us, it is now more accessible than ever. Ethiopian Airlines fly direct from Dublin, three times a week on a state of the art Dreamliner aircraft.

While LA is the city that’s on trend at the moment, you can of course fly onwards to many US cities. Any flight to the US that avoids a connection in Heathrow is a massive bonus for me, but on top of that Ethiopian Airlines offer some of the best airfares on the market to America’s West Coast. At the time of publication, there are return flights available from Dublin to Los Angeles from €449 return, including taxes! Business class upgrades are exceptionally good value. If you have purchased an economy ticket and there is space available, you can upgrade to business class at the airport for €593 from Dublin to LA or  $645 from LA to Dublin. Ok so business class may not be for everyone but prices are a lot lower than other airlines.

hollywood-sign-1598473_1280_opt

Dreamliner highlights include 8.9 inch tv screens in economy class with 80 different channels, higher humidity for a better cabin pressure, adaptable lighting and the biggest windows in the sky. Another bonus when you fly Ethiopian airlines is 2 x 23kg checked bags are included in the price of your airfare.  Although I have been on a Dreamliner before and loved it, I haven’t yet had the pleasure of flying with Ethiopian Airlines. However, fellow travel blogger, The Fabulous Traveller recently had the pleasure and very kindly wrote a review for me. Interestingly he was flying to Las Vegas and found flying direct to LA with an onward connection to Vegas a better option than flying via the UK. Find out what he thought below…

Ethiopian Airlines – Reviewed by The Fabulous Traveller.

It was my first time to fly with an African airline and I will be honest and say I was a little bit hesitant about what the service would be like, the quality of the food and the comfort. We checked into Ethiopian airlines for our flight to Los Angeles which was super early at 4am. It is one of the first flights out of Ireland or the UK to cross the Atlantic, with a departure time of 5.55am. The good news is you arrive at 8.30am into LA!

I was super excited to be on the Dreamliner Boeing 787 for the first time. When I visited the Boeing factory in 2014 with the Entrepreneur programme the staff in Boeing were super excited about this new aircraft. Obviously the Fabulous Traveller only turns left and the business class configuration of 24 seats leaves plenty of space and comfort. We were offered the usual pre-departure champagne with a menu to select our breakfast and lunch for later in the flight. Breakfast on the flight consisted of grilled beef sausage and homemade baked beans or lemon pancake with maple syrup and blueberries. Lunch offered a choice of two starters and North African Lamb Stew, stuffed chicken with seasoned vegetables and couscous or a choice of Ethiopian National dishes. I selected a nice Spanish Rioja to go with my lunch. Dessert was a choice of carrot cake, fruit basket or cheese board.

Ethiopian airlines

The entertainment on the flight was more limited than normal with one or two new releases and a selection of other movies. Ethiopian Airlines could certainly improve the selection of new releases for the flights. Our seats in business class allowed us to get some sleep and the lighting is more ambient and the air quality is much better. You definitely don’t come off the flight congested as you do on other airlines after a long haul flight.

So how would I rate Ethiopian airlines?

I have to say for the price you are paying, which starts as low as €449 including taxes for a return flight in economy and €1450 in business then you definitely get value for money.

Again the friendly service on the flight was exceptional and it was nice to see staff dressed in both western and local African dress. The food will differ a little from European airlines and don’t expect the normal European snacks on the flight just yet, I hear they will be coming soon. Business class passengers need to note that the beds are not 100% lie flat but that may differ according to aircraft. Finally unlike some airlines departing from Dublin, immigration with Ethiopian airlines is in LAX airport. Expect to queue for up to an hour when you arrive. I would suggest a minimum connection time of 2 hours after your arrival time if you are connecting on elsewhere which we did.

Overall the fabulous traveller would give Ethiopian Airlines 4 stars out of 5. A Fabulous rating. The friendly amazing staff, modern aircraft and direct service made Ethiopian Airlines a pleasure to fly with.

Have you heard about Platinum Services in Dublin Airport?

21924_platinum_brochure_digital_single_images4_opt

For most of you, I’m guessing the answer is no. I must confess, until recently I hadn’t either. I  think secretly, they want to keep it that way… Platinum Services is the exclusive, 24 hour, private terminal at Dublin airport.

I had the pleasure of visiting the Platinum Services private terminal recently, and I was seriously impressed! Before you even enter the terminal, you can use the private car park directly outside. Once inside, you have access to individual suites, which are equipped with all the latest audio-visual equipment as well as complimentary refreshments. There are shower rooms, family friendly facilities and conference rooms.  Whether travelling for business or pleasure, your every whim is catered for – and its not just for business travellers either!

VIP’s, honeymooners or special occasion holidaymakers can avail of the service. Be greeted with champagne on arrival and even try their personal shopping if desired. Business travellers can arrange a private meeting in one of their suites or a larger conference in one of their board rooms. You no longer a need to sit in traffic across the M50 to meet a business colleague in the city, they can come to you.

21924_platinum_brochure_digital_single_images12_opt

The best part – no check in queues, no security queues, no queuing to board the aircraft – in fact NO QUEUES at all!. There is private check-in and luggage handling as well as a private security screening area. You are then chauffeur driven by luxury BMW to the aircraft. Who said travelling was stressful – not any more!

So I guess you are wondering how much this amazing service actually costs? Surprisingly a lot less than I expected. For individuals the cost is €160 or for groups of 5 or more the cost is €110. They have bundles for couples, €240 and a family bundle 2 adults & 2 children for €299; all one way. Meeting rooms are available for €200 for four hours. Catering options are available, from breakfast to canapés with prices from €6 per person. All prices include VAT at 23%.

Platinum Services

Ok so you wont be using this every time you pop off to the Costa del Sol, but for a special occasion its a nice treat. For business travellers it can be invaluable.

Koh Samui, Thailand, Flights & 5* Luxury All Inclusive Resort, €1579!

mai-samui_opt-1

Forget about the paradise beaches, the English meaning of Ko Samui – ‘safe haven island’, makes you want to go there…

Koh Samui is one of Thailand’s most popular islands for tourists yet it has managed to stay authentic. It attracts trendy students and upmarket couples and thankfully, not as many rowdy crowds that descend on some of Thailand’s other islands. Stunning beaches, amazing restaurants and lively beach parties are what it is renowned for but if you look a little closer you will find lots of traditional villages with local food stalls, pretty temples, rainforests, waterfalls and even some deserted beaches. A visit to Ang Thong Marine National Park is a must. Complete with 42 islands, some mountainous, some jungle clad, and some with hidden coves just waiting to be explored. When you arrive back at your hotel, a Thai massage will be greatly appreciated 😉

Koh Samui

Speaking of which, the luxurious 5* Mai Samui Resort offers many pampering spa treatments, as well as three swimming pools and a host of on site activities. Take a Thai cookery class, try water yoga or if you are feeling energetic try mountain biking or sea kayaking. The beauty of the Mai Samui Resort is that meals and drinks are included in the price. Enjoy personal service from their excellent staff who will cater for your every need.  There is a choice of three restaurants plus light bites served at the Sand bar ( how cool does that sound?) For a full list of what is included click here. Enjoy a sundowner at the swim up bar or beach bar – did I mention that Koh Samui has the most amazing sunsets!

Koh Samui

This traditional Thai hotel is perfect for anyone who is looking for a luxury hotel in a secluded area, with fantastic facilities. It receives excellent reviews on tripadvisor as well as quotes like ‘dream holiday’ and ‘paradise’!  Tropical Sky are offering an amazing deal for anyone who books 5 nights – you can get the same number of nights FREE! They have deals available from €1,519 for a seven night stay in the winter months and €1579 next Summer. All prices include flights, hotel on an all-inclusive basis, transfers, baggage, all taxes and assistance while in resort.

Top Cameras for Travellers

I get asked quite a lot about the pictures on my blog. I use a combination of stock photos, my own photos and others that my husband has taken. Cormac, was always a keen amateur photographer, before turning professional 10 years ago.  So I asked him what he thought were the top cameras for travellers. Here’s what he said….

Canon G9X

the-travel-experts-camera-is-the-canon_g9x_silver_f001The Canon G9X is the smallest sensor in a camera to date. Slip it in a pocket and you can forget it’s even there, but pull it out and you have the great image quality of a 1-inch sensor on tap. And getting images onto your phone couldn’t be easier, thanks to the in-camera Wi-Fi wireless networking. It is as happy going to a club with you or wandering a city. Take it up a mountain or get pictures for sharing. It is available in both black or chrome with a faux leather jacket.

Features: Less than 7.5 oz in weight! Wi-Fi, Touchscreen operation, HD Video, 6.5 frames per second JPEG burst shooting

P.S This is the camera I use and I love it!

Canon EOS M3

The great thing about this camera is that if you are already using Canon gear and you have a bag full of lenses, you can use your EF lenses with an inexpensive adaptor. canon-eosm3-on-the-travel-expertMirrorless camera, existing lens collection, happy photographer! 🙂

Whilst the camera has no viewfinder, the rear screen is bright, clear and has a touch screen interface that is fully featured.

If you like taking pictures on your phone, this camera will be really easy and intuitive for you to use. Its a fine camera if you want smaller mirrorless camera but still with the functionality of larger DSLR’s.

Features: You can use all your Canon EF lenses, Its got Wi-Fi, Shoots in full HD video

Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark IIOlympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II on the travel expert

This is a fresh version of a camera that we first saw shooting film in the 1970’s! Olympus has gone back to its ethos that smaller is better and this camera has all the very latest in high tech features. It is packed full of functionality and has a great low light shooting capabilities for early morning or night photography. TI has touch screen focus options for when you are shooting video and also shooting stills. After framing your picture you can focus and shoot almost instantaneously by simply touching the focus item on the back of the screen. All this and still small enough to fit in a small camera bag.

Features: Interchangeable lens, Wi-Fi, electronic viewfinder, five-axis image stabilization, high-resolution composite image, HD video

Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX8

The Panasonic G series has been a photographer favourite for a few years. These cameras are loved for their small size and excellent image quality, as well as for the huge range of lenses available from The-travel-expert-reviews-web-Panasonic-GX8-3Panasonic, Olympus, and Leica. An added advantage is that the micro 4/3 cameras in this series all share a common lens mount and functionality. This is a good choice if you want a higher megapixel count than the Olympus cameras offer. National Geographic photographer, David Alan Harvey used an earlier version of this surprisingly tiny camera to capture many of the pictures featured in a National Geographic magazine story on North Carolina’s Outer Banks.

Features: Interchangeable lens, Wi-Fi, electronic viewfinder, in-body image stabilisation, 4K video

Fuji X100T

the-travel-expert-fuji-x100t

I really like this camera for a number of reasons. Its retro looks are some of the best around. The image quality is superb and its fantastically compact. Yo can put it in your pocket and go anywhere. If you aren’t interested in carrying a full camera kit when you travel but still want to exercise your artistic side, go simple with this camera.

Try the non-interchangeable-lens camera that boasts a 35mm-equivalent field of view and get back in to doing some work for your picture. This retro-looking camera boasts Fujifilm’s X-Trans CMOS sensor. It has a radically different way of separating colours, leading to small-sensor image quality that rivals many larger cameras. Only having a single field of view might seem too simple, but limited choice can often lead to better pictures. It’s also great to be free from carrying too many lenses and accessories. Get back to the simplicity of just taking pictures.

Features: Single-focal-length 23mm lens (35mm full-frame field of view), Wi-Fi, hybrid electronic/optical viewfinder, HD video

Fuji X-T1 Fujifilm XT-1 on The Travel Expert

If you are into timeless classy looks as well as terrific image quality, then this 1970’s retro styled camera. The styling is a throwback to what film cameras (yes, remember them?) used to look like. The camera uses a pentaprism at the top which holds one of the very best electronic viewfinders around today. Everything about this camera is fast – its autofocus, its image review on screen, it motordrive so you can shoot a lot of pictures in quick succession, fast too! With the small size of this camera and lenses, it means that, even if you decide to carry the whole system with you on your travels, the bag will be less than half the size of a standard DSLR’s.

Features: Interchangeable lens, Wi-Fi, electronic viewfinder, high-speed electronic shutter with speeds up to 1/32000 sec, HD video

Canon 5D Mk III

The Canon 5D Mark III is the true “superstar” camera, with impressive capabilities for both still and video shooting. It suits the needs of well-heeled amateurs and working pros alike, and while its the-travel-expert-and-the-canon5d-mkiiiresolution is only very slightly higher than that of the 5D Mark II, the Canon 5D Mark III offers so many improvements over its predecessor that it’ll be an easy upgrade decision for many 5D Mark II owners. Although the 5D Mk IV has just arrived, I like this one better. It has absolutely stunning still and video image quality. The 5D Mk III is both powerful and fast. It has a really accurate AF system with loads of cross-type points, loads of configurability and great frame coverage. The best part about this for travellers is that the camera comes with a weather-sealed body. It is really rugged and can put up with a lot. Just don’t be swinging this around your neck. This camera is expensive and targeted by many thieves.

The Canon EOS 5D Mark III is not only a very capable camera in almost all areas, it’s also fun and exciting to shoot with. It is mentioned really for those advanced amateurs who really want great pictures and a know how to handle a camera.

Features: Multi Exposure Mode, Six Styles, Silent Shooting and lots, lots more!

So there you go, a camera for every eventuality and type of traveller I hope! Something for everyone with some cameras more expensive than others. Decide on your budget and requirements and acknowledge both your skill level and what you want to do with the camera – this should help in your decision making process. Always remember though that it is not the equipment that matters it is your eye and what you see with it.
